Would like to see an episode where Rory gets to operate the off-road wrecker, just to give some suggestions and opinions on it. Obviously it's not Trail Mater, but some insight from Rory on how he runs that rig might spark some good ideas on the off-road wrecker.

I have been mentioning this since the wrecker build began... Matt needs to talk to Eric at BSF Recovery. Eric uses a typical wrecker sling for 90% of his recoveries. There is definitely a learning curve to using a sling on extreme terrain but it can be done and it is worth learning and using. The wrecker boom would have also benefitted from an extendable boom to give space between vehicles with better angles.

SUGGESTION: if you install cheap aftermarket back view camera on the lower part of the boom(or somewhere where you can see the front of the tow car), then you would not need to overthink how high to lift the tow car, you could just go with whatever height, and then actively adjust and lower it on the big drops(so it does not overturn, or lif it up, if front wheels interfering in a bad way on steps up). But it would always give you perfect feedback on where you want to be as you go.

That’s why Matt didn’t make the wrecker a crew cab. He can look out the back window and see that. Just needs more practice doing everything thing at the same time. You’re trying to keep track of 8 tires, 3 steering axles, 3 winch controls, communicating with the other driver. It’s a lot of stuff that he needs to get used to.
@warrenmichael918
@warrenmichael918 11 ай бұрын
That would just make another item to have to watch and keep track of. Always watching the camera would take his eyes off more important stuff.

@@warrenmichael918 Soon he will develop a muscle memory for all the controls, and then extra set of eyes directly down and under towing vehicle becomes a no brainer. Nobody complains about cameras in everyday vehicles, here its even more critical/handy when passing extreme steps.

Seeing the success of the heavywrecker, how about adding "Summer mudguards" for the looks, small but adding to the looks easily removeable", and "winter mudguards" also with looks but larger and removeable easily to same mounts. Maybe somebody can mock up a few styles on a computer to chose from. I think if done right can make a huge difference on top of an already highly successfull rescue vehicle.

That was amazing pulling up the hill. How tall was that rock Jamie drove the passanger rear over? Looked to be at least 4' if not 5'. Amazing what it just walks over. Very nice MORR crew. Have a great weekend!

Im sure this has been mentioned, but a longer boom would surely help. Maybe use the existing lower frame, and add an adjustable center boom with lock pins

Sean Digaetano. I agree. I've always thought the boom was far too short, also the cross straps arent going to stop the towed vehicle from hitting the wrecker, i'm sure when Matt was doing the off road games he was using an A frame for towing, i think that's all it needs, it may need modifying of course.

For your X attachment maybe you could put some eyes on the frame in the back and use the side winches for adjustable length straps. Did this once with my winch when I broke a transfer case mount off the frame. Ran the line down the frame over some stuff and around the mount then tightened the winch.

Strap the axle up so it doesn't sag. If the vehicle has a front winch, you can use the winch to do it. It will let you keep the vehicle lower on the boom.

Matt, there are several reasons that I like your channel: 1) I love Utah's scenery and the back country trips; 2) Your whole family and extended family are always having fun and working together; 3) You embrace your community and are generous; 4) You are creative (example: the wrecker); 5) And you maintain a sense of humility (perhaps, even after this post)!

Would it make sense to give Lizzy the remotes for the boom? You still have switches in the cab and that way both of you could make adjustments whenever either of you see a problem coming.

That could be risky. The person in the broken vehicle doesn't see anything in front, so the pitch could change very quickly without warning. Also the wrecker driver needs to know the winch setup the whole time, so the two drivers would need to communicate pretty well.

That was a lovely addition Chad and his boys created for you Matt, A dual victory pie holder. I know you have to find your own way with the wrecker and for sure you will, Rory has tried the solid connection to the vehicle being towed and said it is fine on the road but a big dangerous no no for off road. I'm just talking between friends so as to speak. That was a nice recovery and it’s good to see the wrecker doing so well. Keep safe and I look forward to your next one.

Before you lift up the towed vehicle you could strap down the front axle to the frame (keep suspension compressed) and avoid having to lift too high or bumping the tires on the ground frequently. Probably works on rear axles as well if you’re towing backwards. Use your Matt straps! Anyway, love what you do, greets from Germany!
