New Year... Does anybody actually enjoy going out for it? If you do, please teach me because I can't think of anything worse! In this video, I tell some stories from my experiences of working on New Years Eve and why I hated it so much!
I also just wanted to take this opportunity to say, this will be my last video of 2021. The team and myself are taking a break over the Christmas period, and I would like to thank each and every one of you. You have changed my life this year and I am forever grateful. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and New Year, stay safe, and look after yourselves. We have lots of channel content coming next year so stay tuned as you will not want to miss it.

@@cockpiss9260 Me and our lass did Hogmanay in Edinburgh a few years back and despite it being absolutely heaving we didn't see much trouble at all. But... We were tourists and only there for a couple of days, mooching between pubs reccomended to us by Scottish relatives. I can imagine there are areas/bars and clubs which attract the less desirable types banned from the decent establishments in Grassmarket/George St. etc and can properly kick-off. We're in Yorkshire and don't go out any more as no matter whether it's Leeds, York, Sheffield or Hull, all four corners have become warzones most weekends, let alone on NYE!

Jamaican - Spiced Rum - 150 proof! Smooth! PTSD - I never thought my job affected me. Until one night - after 28 yrs - and I was 2 yrs off on sick leave waiting for surgery and the Firehall kicked off at 1 AM, and I was awake for the rest of the night. I was 400 meters to the Firehall - and with every ring - I never slept a wink. 30 yrs of running to alarms. I was a taxi driver as a kid - in 18 months - I was at an accident every month. You describe it well. I had boxes too - stuff that I could not share, with anyone. It was confidential - privileged info - and I never wanted my spouse to every slip. I never realized the harm this was for me. My break - was 14 days after one of my guys died on the job. I hired the best guy I could and told him he could call me anytime to get advice on something. For 2 yrs - I answered his calls, even gave him a reference for anyone that was required. I am retired now. He and I still talk today - about stuff that NO one understands. But WE know now - that sharing it - decreases his PTSD exposure. Thank YOU Ben - Cheers from Canada!

In recent years I've started a new New Year's tradition where, instead of waking up at midnight and seeing the New Year in, I instead wake up early on New Year's Day and watch the sun rise. A far better way to start the year!!

I won't lie, I zoned out for a moment due to it being gone one in the morning and when I zoned back in I was greeted with "I had a fight with Spongebob Squarepants outside the park pub". I once got attacked by a 5'11" (probably in the region or 250lbs) "Sexy Miss Santa Clause" wearing the obligatory off the shoulder, upper thigh skimming red, furry hemmed dress, who was using her handbag akin to a medieval ball and chain! She'd already fought off two door supervisors and a couple of council Nightsafe wardens by the time I pulled up single crewed... That was the same night an elf decked out in tinsel covered costume took off her stilettos and hurled them at the car, bouncing off the rear windscreen and boot lid as we drove off with her boyfriend for a night in the cells for slapping her in front of a monitored CCTV camera. Good times...

This sounds so familiar. My mum works for an NHS lab doing bloodwork and hates getting the new year shifts as it's constant toxicology testing for alcohol poisoning and overdoses, urgent work for collisions, police and A&E, and child abuse cases.

When I was a bus driver in Birmingham (I know, but someone has to do it..!) the New Year service was a good job to get, as you got a full day's pay at double time for about 5 hours or so. We did four journeys from the City Centre to wherever it was (I did the trips to Solihull, as I lived out that way) each starting on the hour, so midnight, 1am, 2am, 3am. The first trip was chock full, the 2nd and 3rd trips relatively quiet, and the last one was almost empty. Never had any trouble, they were mostly what we called 'singing drunk' rather than 'fighting drunk' 🤣 The one trip I do remember though was one year on the very last run, 3am from the City Centre. I got to Solihull and there were only a few people on. After they'd got off, I checked to make sure there was no lost property or anything and there was this one bloke towards the back of the bus, spark out, dead to the world. I shook his shoulder to wake him up, and he staggered towards the door. "Where are we..?" he slurred. "Solihull" I replied. "But I wanted to go to Ladywood" came the reply..! Ladywood, for those who don't know Birmingham, is the other side of the city and at least 9 miles away. The last I saw of him, he was staggering down the road as drunks do, I often wonder if he ever got home🤣

Completely agree, new year is the worst day of the year to go out! The pay thing is garbage too, at the very least you should be paid from midnight at bank holiday rates, if 7 hours of your 12 hour shift is on the bank holiday how does that not count!! It’s the same for days off you can request a day off on the 5th and put on a night shift for the 4th it doesn’t not make sense!!

Stay at home don’t go out don’t drink. Sound advice Ben could t agree more! Vast majority can’t handle the drink or turn into nasty violent when drunk. Leave the drinking to the sleepy drunks and the ones who can know when to stop!

I was working double crewed on the carrier NYE 1999, midnight hit and that was it. Fights, domestics you name it it came in. We were literally whacking people in the van dropping them home and going to the next job it was that busy. We had the give the carrier a ten minute rest the brakes were that hot..good old days.

Was wondering if you have any plans for any videos on personal safety when off duty since it's not a normal job, you always have to be vigilant and can't just switch off.

Will you be working in or around the place were you live? Don't mention actual locations on here, but living and working in the same town/city (even county) can heavily influence how you conduct yourself when off duty.

@@BM-vb4hh Ultimately, you're never "off-duty" as I'm sure they'll teach you in training. All I'll say is this. You do NOT have PPE, you do not have a radio or a colleague for back up. Unless it is life-changing or life-threatening, don't get involved. Stay back, call 999 and act as a professional witness. You won't be anywhere near ready to deal with a situation on your own for at least a year and a half, let alone off-duty. Protect yourself and don't get involved :)

There an endemic issue with the UK's attitude to alcohol. I don't go out partly because I'm not a social person but mainly because being around folk who've been drinking makes me nervous! Every year I'm pushed to go to the office Xmas party & I couldn't think of anything worse! I'd just spend the whole night on edge wanting to go home. Needless to say I'm too strong (or stubborn 😇) & after 16 I still haven't gone to a works doo yet 😁

I remember getting a call at 1am on New Year’s Day morning from Oscar 1 at the jail……he whispered & I quote: “you alrite mate, you pissed?” I said, “no I’m in bed with the missus, having an early night” he then said, “how long will it take you to get in?” I said, “about 30mins”……..he then said, “you wanna come in & beat the shit outta this knob head I got setting fires & flooding his cell in segregation? He needs relocating to a different cell under restraint!”…….I said “yeah ok”…….I grabbed my Tornado kit & went into work, got the job done, I was gone 3hrs, earned £250 Tornado call out pay, climbed back into bed & my missus didn’t even realise I left the house!!! Lol…..
