Hilly personifies a snake in sheep's clothing. She's very beautiful; a true southern belle. She always seems to wear a smile. Her voice is soft and beautiful with that little southern twang. She seems perfect. ...Then you see how cold her heart is. You see how jealous, manipulative, and cruel she is. Really just a fascinating character.

Being married to a military personnel, I can say that a lot of people within traditional military families are like this, especially in the south. Most of the wives or husbands will wear their pristine, chagrined smiles - bunched off into gaggles of other like-men and women - when deep down, they're only forced to make nice to keep up that charming, bow-tied appearance. I'd say a lot of southern folk are like this, but I wouldn't know much about that, as my experience is solely exclusive with other military couples, which a lot remind me of Ms. Hilly.

I think there are "Ms. Hillys" anywhere you go. I live in southern California and used to volunteer at my sister's elementary school (reading and art programs, nothing huge.) Some of those PTA moms were the cattiest women I've ever met. They would collectively pick a mom that they didn't like for the dumbest reasons and would talk behind her back while smiling these huge fake smiles to her face. It felt like I was in high school.

She cooks for them, cleans for them, and would take care of their child (if Hilly were to have one. Can’t remember it’s been awhile since I’ve watched the movie). It’s not Hilly’s job to provide for her but it’s an act of human decency to someone who has devoted their time to you. “That ain’t working for free, Yule Mae. That’s paying off a debt.” ... Okay, then I’ll pay off the debt with labor!
@morganolfursson25605 жыл бұрын
Actually this is the only thing this snake of Hilly was right on. If you make 1 dollars a day working 10 hours and your employer doesn't need you to work more than 10 hours, how can you repay the loan ? To pay back a loan you need to be able to work more than you do, so this maid would have to work a second job elsewhere after her job to pay back the loan, which is basically impossible, so she would have been in debt endlessly. There is no such thing as working for free to pay back a loan to the employer. What she could have asked was a raise. The only establishment you can get a loan from is the bank or if you have good ones, friends. The bank will demand that you pay back more than you borrow so you are more likely to end up more and more in debt as years go buy until you lose everything you own to pay the bank back (that's how banks function) , but you can't ask your employer a loan, just a raise or an advance on the next wage . So as much as it kills me to admit it, Hilly or in her case Helly , was sadly right. And the worst thing to do was to steal the ring , this was a HUGE mistake. Stealing is already bad in itself but stealing from your employer is the most stupid thing to do, because you lose your job, you lose your freedom and nobody goes to college , and the sons' career is over before it even started. So hilly was disgustingly cruel, but the Maid (i am sorry i do not remember her name) shouldn't have stolen the ring and just sent the brightest of the two sons to college. Even today many families can't send all of their kids to college and sacrifices are made, so people should not live above their means and be realistic. Personally i believe that parents who can not provide the best for their kids and who aren't fully sure that money will not be an issue should refrain from having kids or stop to the number of kids they can afford. I think this is very selfish to have kids when you do not have enough money to provide them with everything they need (not want, need, like a proper education).Of course this doesn't apply to this maid because back in those days maid or not, women didn't have the possibility to choose and the only birth control was either abstinence or abortion (and i mean , knitting needles and hooks and vinegar water.
@anastasiagonzalez36425 жыл бұрын
Morgan Olfursson I agreed until you said she shouldn’t have kids. She can afford her kids, but tuition for college doesn’t apply to that seeing as tuition depending on majors AND which colleges youre looking at changes. @morganolfursson25605 жыл бұрын
@@anastasiagonzalez3642 I don&t understand how you assume she can afford the kids. She can feed them maybe , but kids need more than food and a roof to become independent adults . @@morganolfursson2560 If she was loaned 75 dollars and was paid a dollar a day by Hilly, then working 75 days without getting paid would pay off the debt. @morganolfursson25605 жыл бұрын
@@khadijahmuhammad4771 But maids in those days already worked seven days a week 365 days a year so they couldn't get any extra work day to pay off the loan . If they worked 365 days a year for a dollar a day then all they could make was 365 dollars a year, no a penny more , so if Hilly had given an extra 75 dollars to the maid then the maid could have never paid the loan back even if she had worked another 60 years for Hilly. That's simple math. If i employ you 7 days a week and pay you 7 dollar a week, and you ask me to give you and extra 5 dollars, how are you ever going to pay me back that extra 5 dollars you owe me. By working more ? But when , tyou want to put 8 days in a week for 5 weeks ? That's impossible, you want to work nights too, but i don't need you at night so why would i make you work, do you want to bring your brother or sister to work for me for that extra 5 dollar, but i only need you, not extra staff . Yule May's story is really upsetting in the book. She's asks Hilly for a loan to cover the last of what they need to get both boys to college and when she doesn't get it she steals the ring and it was worthless. Hilly had it valued and it was worth nothing so she never wore it again. In the book Yule May is the first maid to agree to be interviewed by Skeeter but she's arrested, charged and tried before she can do it. She writes Skeeter a letter explaining what she did she and why, she said she felt she was owed it after how badly Hilly treated her and she was too scared to look for another job in case Hilly refused a reference. Hilly uses her influence with Yule May's trial judge (Hilly is friends with his wife) to get Yule May a massive fine that her and her husband have to used their boys college tuition to pay it and the judge gives her the maximum prison sentence which is four years. Pascagoula takes the letter to Skeeter as they're cousins. Thats why all the maids changed their minds about letting Skeeter interview them because Yule May is well liked, she's also very well educated much more so than Hilly she only had a little bit left of college to complete but she dropped out to get married. Skeeter pays the maids for their time during the interviews and most ask for the money to go towards the college fund for Yule May's boys the church start a collection for them after Yule May goes to jail

@walterfielding90793 жыл бұрын
This scene has always made me scratch my head, because my grandmother grew up in the South in a wealthy white family in the 50s and 60s, and they had a black maid. They, for what I understand were very kind and understanding to her and actually gave her money as a gift when her husband got hurt working at the dock yards in Mobile, Alabama. They also invited the maid and her husband for Christmas every year, even though they always declined, however the maid and her family would come to New Year's Eve parties as guest. My grandmother said her parents lost friends for doing that. I've often wondered if my family's story is different because my great grandfather was from the North and moved south for a management position and his wife's family. My great grandmother was born and raised very poor in the south so I guess she sympathized more with the Blacks than other whites. My great grandfather being a Northern and Lutheran probably shaped his opinions on race positively as well. I'm not trying to justify that era or try to down play the bad things Black folks had to deal with. But it just seems weird hearing the stories of my grandmother's youth and then watching movies and reading stories like this. A little difference goes a long way I suppose.

Minnie coaching her daughter i was tearing up out of no where, it terrifies me to think if i had to send my children out into the world at such a time as this. I know what's going on in the world today be specifically in a time like these I can only hope to have the courage black families had to carry. They had no choice.

CatDaddy That is not even in the Bible, and is the most cheesy “scripture “. God sent us His Son, because we could not help ourselves. The only time I’ve heard this , is by arrogant asshats who refuse to help other people.

The power struggle has been a reality of employment for a very long time. Instead of treating others respectfully some feel it necessary to tear others down in an attempt to build themselves up. I look forward to a day that we are just people and an individual's skin colour is NEVER a consideration for any reason.

The real reason Hilly didn't give or loan her black maid that $75.00 is obvious. Hilly didn't have God in her life. How can she love others (as God commands Christians to do) & love God first when she's clearly empty inside of her own self. Hilly was dead inside. No life of Jesus Christ in her life at all. You can't give something you don't have.

The way the maid loses all her hope when the husband leaves it’s as if she knows she’s being left with the meaner person who is guaranteed to say no and that she would have more of a chance if he’d stuck around, but the husband was too cowardly to have that conversation so he just left. That’s why Hilly takes so much pleasure with that wicked smile when she’s left alone with her bc she knows. It’s like that feeling you get when you ask the parent you know might say yes but then you get told to ask the parent you know is gonna say no…

Women were thinner, on average, in the 1950s. This applied to black women as well... some of which were underfed due to unlivable wages. One of the reasons why I flat out refused to watch this movie is bc they made it a point to make sure that all of the maids looked like "Mammy". Meanwhile, "Mammy" was only depicted as a fat old and unattractive woman via propaganda, to erase and denote the sexual exploitation/ unwanted advances that black women endured in the slave-era ("Mammy" first appeared in the 1700s). They were so dedicated the preserving this myth that they made Viola wear a fat suit smh.
