That tire was a Ferris Wheel at the 1964 World's Fair. You can find pictures of it on google pretty easily. It is kind of amazing how many items seem to link back to that Fair. The Henry Ford Museum is such a great collection of objects. We have a membership to it and it seems like every time we go in we find something new. Greenfield Village next door is also pretty cool (if it's not raining). Henry relocated a bunch of historic buildings from around the country including the Wright Brother's bike shop.
@OrvilleChomer Жыл бұрын
I like the museum. But I like Greenfield Village [More] than the museum! I mean, I can walk inside Thomas Edison's laboratory where he and his workers cranked out all those amazing inventions, I can walk in the Wright brothers' bike shop as mentioned and the home that they grew up in. I can walk in Noah Webster's house (i.e. they guy who put together the Webster's Dictionary, and much more. BTW, the tour of the Ford auto plant nearby is pretty cool too!
@JeffDeWitt Жыл бұрын
@@OrvilleChomer It's not actually Edison's laboratory, it's a replica. But it's so accurate that when Edison visited he looked at something sitting on a bench, pointed somewhere else, and said "that's supposed to be over there". And yes, Greenfield Village is amazing.

that is such an iconic landmark especially on the way to the airport the Uniroyal tire I actually know the guy who paints it every 3 years! The Henry Ford and Greenfield village puts on a deal for Christmas called Holiday nights of Christmas. This museum is top notch! I always enjoy seeing one of the one of 49 Tucker cars! THANK you for doing this I think this is like comfort food for me! I've been having some rough cat rescue days including the loss of my own 12-year-old cat who grieved himself to death after the loss of my 24-year-old Russian Blue. I need to find my happy place and I think the Henry Ford fits that bill! I can't believe they have an Atari Pong there! The first Christmas that came out we were fortunate to have that! if you're able to stay here a little longer Toledo is only an hour south and there is not only Tony packo's from mash but there's also the spaghetti station and you can have your meal in a trolley car but all the booths are bed steads. The cars are amazing! So much history! The dream Cruise which is on Woodward happens the third Saturday of every August! Coney Islands are also famous for their great breakfast! Saganaki the flaming cheese it's an experience! Thank you for reminding me why I live here!!!!

The Henry Ford is really one of the world's great museums. I got to it the first time a year ago and am planning on going back soon. The building itself is interesting, if you look at those big columns with the ridges on them those ridges are actually radiators that were used to heat the building. You also ought to head west to Hickory Corners and the Gilmore Auto Museum. GREAT collection of cars very well presented, plus you can take a class and learn how to drive a Model T. One of the coolest things I've ever done.

We’re so glad you chose to stop at the Henry Ford. Since moving away 18 years ago, the museum and Greenfield Village are probably the 2 things we miss most about Detroit. I still remember my first visit, a field trip when I was in the 2nd grade. My husband and I would try to visit at least a couple of times a year. Our favorites times to visit were during Halloween and Christmas. The village is decorated for fall with cornstalks and jack o lanterns. At Christmas time, the private homes are decorated for the holidays according to the time period the home is from. You can go ice skating, buy a bag of hot chestnuts and go for a ride in a Model T. It’s probably the best part of Detroit. Since our folks passed away, we haven’t been back. We miss Michigan very much. Thank you for saying nice things about Detroit.

Adam, You mentioned Jackie crawling onto the trunk a couple times... Don't know if you realize it but, after watching several documentaries on the assassination, she was not crawling on the trunk to help the secret service guy into the car... She was crawling to retrieve a part of her husband's brain that had landed on the trunk... She held on to that and gave it to a surgeon at Parkland hospital after he was pronounced dead... Her getting out and crawling back to get it was just a reflex..
