When 1st I was studying shamanism, I thought that the key had been lost to to olden times. Somewhat true. But the blossoming anew of practice....serious study of the esoteric mystic and occult teachings ignighted by new age technologies and the nessacities og changing the dirty ways of industrialism. ...it grew from child like baby step of Wicca ect in the 60s and 70s to a force literally of nature

Adam, at any point do you have plans to include in your lecture how Egypt & Hermetic philosophy have influenced modern mystery schools such as Freemasonry, or do you feel it is not appropriate subject matter to your series of lectures? Thanks & thanks for sharing.

I am taking your class and in the middle of listening to a guest lecture, I suddenly had to know a bit more about Hermeticism and was delighted to find your series here. I remember another astrologer once saying that Mercury gave us Astrology and that he goes around the zodiac so fast, that he has most knowledge of it (and everything.) I remember reading about Hermes in Carl Jung's book, Dreams: "Western alchemy is mainly of Egyptian origin, so let us all first turn our attention to the Hellenistic figure of Hermes Trismegistus, who, while standing sponser to the medieval Mercurius, derives ultimately from the ancient egyptian Thoth. The attribute of Thoth was the baboon, or again he was represented outright as an ape." (He goes on to say this ancient connection with the ape disappeared but was still present during the Roman Empire.) Jung elaborates on the idea that the ultimate personal or collective transformation "...ieads from the depths to the heights from the bestially archaic and infantile to the mystical *homo maximus*." I was thinking on what he said about "rites of renewal" in terms of plant ceremony experiences, dreams, etc. ".... they point far beyond the merely archaic and infantile to man's innate psychic disposition, which is the result and deposit of all ancestral life right down to the animal level - hence the ancestor and animal symbolism. The rites are attempts to abolish the separation between the conscious mind and the unconscious, the source of real life...." When I read Robertson Davies' book, "The Manticore," it ended with a Jungian analysand going through a very primitive and aniamalistic rite of passage by means of psychological guidance and setting. Anyway, so much more to think about in terms of the quadrangle circle and cross, and Mercurius being "the great quadrangler," according to Jung.

The great quadrangler. How has this perfection evaded me for so long? Dr. Jung is priceless & profound with a wink & a smile.

Actual egyptian magic , especially old kingdom, is very different than the zodiac in this hermetica book, the examples of the "zodiac influence" in egypt are a superficial at best, several egyptian zodiac carvings have mistakes, whereas in my studies of ancient animal figures and composite human/animals, animal symbols that became zodiac was an influence that came from sumeria were these types of animals and symbols where common and was their superstitions, for example, of "cat" or "sphinx" gate guards" and "dog" toilet guards were from SUMERIA not EGYPT, and were directly influencing the art and decoration, for example, giant bowls of The Temple of Zeus, were from sumerian origins, then within a couple centuries these composite animals like centaurs, satyrs, et cetera, were on Italian vases and other Italian and greek decorations, and the greek were at war with sumerian, persian, etcetera and didnot want to give credit to them for anything and the "mythical" egypt heritage was invented i.m.o. the animal symbols of the zodiac are "eastern" i.m.o. egytians were not that big of an influence, compared to sumerians and india. good book about this "The Centaurs Smile: the human animal in early Greek art" by J. Micheal Padgett.
