Michael Kazmierczak technically he is only 14 years old so he is a kid and I think that in the newer version Arslan grows so much by his tasks from episode to episode it’s nice to see

Kinda the point, he IS a child. In actuality Arslan in the anime is actually closer to the novel than this OVA though it does take some liberties. The whole point of the novel is Arslan learning to become a good king. Of them all though if you can't read the novels the Arslan Senki manga currently running is probably the closest to the novels plot while using the animes style. *Minor Spoilers* Back to the point there's a timeskip in the novels after his coronation at which point he's older (almost 19) and while he retains his righteous nature and kindness towards others he's far more conscious of the world and merciless when his subjects are threatened. In short he DOES become someone worth following and those who have followed him show this. It's far clearer in the novel/manga that early on they're basically following him purely out of fealty but that by the later novels once he's actually proven himself they follow him because he's become a reliable person, the anime kinda rushed that part *tl'dr* - I don't think the novels would have worked nearly as well if he had been reliable from the very beginning as he seems here. The fact he had to grow from a child and prove himself to his subjects made the fact they followed him into some truly dire situations later on more impactful.

As a fan of Arakawa, I concur. She wasted her time with Arslan. After seeing Yoshitaka Amano's illustration and this, the 90s aesthetic fits Arslan so much better than Arakawa's. Her style is unsuitable for epics. I would even go as far as to say her adaption of Arslan ruined the image of the series, and a massive mistake by the publisher. The original novel illustration by Amano was beyond fantastic, and while the 90s comic version can't quite measure up, it wasn't marketed as heavily as Arakawa's. I thought someone like Clamp of the 90s might have given the series the edge and mystique it needed.

Actually old anime showed many more small scenes, that gave some humanity to the random soldiers, giving much more context to their disapproval and morality confronted to their leader's actions compared to the new... also Gieve got 4 or 5 arrows to hit, instead of 1 headshot.

I would say that a lot of old animation is better but art in new anime is better. New anime doesnt have as much of a focus on the animation as much as the quality of the art imo. Very few put as much effort into making complex and dynamic scenes because everything has gone digital.

Their is anime like this, I’ve been watching knights of sidonia and it has the similar aspect which is what I love. I love the cgi and it isn’t allways laggy like other cgi anime I’ve watched. Trust me watch it you won’t be disappointed!!!

I decided to watch this just to kill some time, but then I saw the Arabic on one of the scrolls being burnt and had to know where the story took place. Found out it's loosely based on a Persian epic from the 19th century, so of course I want to read the original story too.

アルスラーン戦記はまだ高校生のとき、荒川弘版の漫画から入りました！なので見慣れてるのは荒川版だけど、私は小説もぜんぶ揃えています。旧作のアニメも好きです！それぞれ雰囲気やデザインなど違いますが、違いを楽しむのも好きです！ あ、そういえば荒川版のキャラデザのアニメ、好きだけどアルスラーンが女々しい描写が多くてあからさまなので、そこだけ気に入らないかな。でもダリューンとヒルメスの対決は毎回作画に気合が入ってて好き。笑 旧作は絵も好きだし、声も良くて、続編がないのが残念でした……旧作のギラン編も観たかった！

Persia is more Central Asia, Iran and the Caucasus - whereas the political term known as _Middle East_ includes North Africa, the Arabian peninsula and the Levant - which *TOTALLY* differ from Persians and Persia. (Iran is a plateau and not a flat land desert like Iraq, Egypt or Saudi Arabia) And tbh, the new Arslan played more on the stereotypical bullshit (like lumping Persia with dozens of other cultures in the "Middle East") and portrayed Ecbatana (modern day Hamedan) as a desertic Oasis with palm trees and beduins running around; when in reality, Hamedan is *mountainous* and snow falls constantly in winter and Persians weren't desert dwelling Bedouins wearing robes. Persians wore boots and pants. Heck, even the Greeks portrayed them wearing boots and pants. Persians don't wear the Arabic Abayas and diapers on their heads as the new Arslan is suggesting. In all fairness this "old version" is more accurate in terms of portrayal of ancient Sassanians or Parthians. Just Google it.

@@marmary5555 I think they were reliant on Abbasid culture for clothing design for the troops also in the new anime they were wearing pants they just have tunics on top of it. The old one is the one where they don't wear pants and resemble more like Mycenean armor of the bronze age or Indo-Persian armor of the 11th- 12th Century.
