Best solution? Get out or get Dragged. lol And just stick with what's current(Switch, PS5, XSX, Quest 3 & PSVR2). :P Or, just buy a bunch of EverDrive's for your 8-16 bit consoles! ;) You'll gain convenience and save a ton of money Vs buying the carts. But ya, It's too bad that Analogue isn't selling the Super Nt & Mega Sg anymore. there's no way I'm shelling out $1200+ CAD each for both off eBay, and the Nt Mini is over 2 grand now. However, Retro-usb's 'AVS' & the Analogue DUO are still available and affordable at least! Pair those with a smaller 'QD'-OLED, like the Samsung S90C or S90D and you're golden.

My biggest issue is the community. I have to live vicariously through all of this amazing KZbin content. I have been to so many retailers in my area that aren’t collectors, have stolen from each other, or have sold broken copies, and claimed it wasn’t bought at the store. I love this hobby so much, and have to try to find time to cut in as much as I can to keep that enjoyment level up like you said Mort. I honestly wish I had a community like you guys all do to always keep in front of mind, and always have the next level of enjoyment. For the first time in almost 2 years, I finally found about 20 Nintendo games and a Nintendo system that weren’t being sold at a retail price. I was so excited to bring them home and talk to someone about it and then remembered that there wasn’t anyone who understood my enjoyment or excitement for the hobby. That’s definitely the part that I’m missing in this hobby

I saw my comment put on screen, and it has made me smile even more through the whole video. It means the world that you cared enough to capture and edit it in. Thank you Mort! Fellini is amazing, and I am always surprised how many younger people that are into film have never heard of him. I ended up with two degrees in college, and my year in Ireland got me a Documentary and Drama degree. Not a single one of them had ever heard of Fellini. I was about to leave a get together with 12 of the film students when I talked about the films, and we ended up spending 5+ hours binging them instead. It actually impacted the class and how they wrote and filmed. I am not old by any means (36), but my film watch history often leaves me feeling as if I am haha. For me my collecting has only started in the last year or so. I brought my toys and games that survived back to Ireland with me, and I have been slowly filling gaps. We didn't have a lot growing up, and I ended up with one or two things from different lines. Now I am starting to fill those gaps, and filling out a few of the cheaper and smaller lines. I still have all of my old games though. My Gameboy, Colour, and Pocket all still work no bother. My Pokemon games still all work. Sadly none of the boxes, sega, or N64 stuff made it through moves, but the handheld games made it and work. I am perfectly happy with my Pokemon Blue, Yellow, Silver, and Crystal. I don't feel a need to get the others because I have the ones that brought me hours of enjoyment. I would like to get boxes for them, but I will probably need to do a repro or such like minibox gamming because of price. For me collecting is about getting those things that bring back memories, and maybe a few things that I would have gotten if we had more cash or if I knew about them back then. I like it to be small and personal, and I will only get something if the price is fair as well. I do love seeing things like your N64 wall though. If I had even thought about collecting years ago, I could totally have seen me doing that when prices were lower. I 100% appreciate your wall, and thankfully I don't have any envy or fomo. Last point, your audio editing on this was breathtaking. The fact that it could be so naturally missed is purely because of how masterful you mixed it. You created a perfect atmosphere that was captivating and emotional. I just wanted to make sure that you know it was noticed and appreciated. It sets the stage for a smooth and relaxing viewing experience that I took a break from working to enjoy. Thank you!

@@MortsGarage Nights of Cabiria and La Strada are probably my top 2 if I was being objective. 8 1/2 is also fantastic as well, so you having those as favourites makes absolute sense. Even though they are not thought to be as good.

Nothing terribly life affecting mind you, just takes up too much of my free time and focus. I'm very interested in exploring the psychological drives behind collecting and what makes it such a potentially absorbing hobby. Though truthfully the answer is almost assuredly in the person rather than the hobby, imo.

The big problem i have with retro gaming as a whole, is that you just can't recapture the feeling you had all those years ago when experiencing said game for the first time for numerous reasons. It's never the same! BUT, it's such a fun hobby and in ways, it feels like revisiting an old friend. For me personally, I just can't let go of the 8-16 bit stuff. Partially due to my love for everything late 80's & early 90's pop culture related, but also because many of the games on SNES(for ex), even NES and maybe Genesis have aged quite well. Zelda ALTTP and Super Mario World as everybody knows are totally timeless. Yet going back to 3D Sega Saturn, PS1 & even N64 games is the equivalent of revisiting an old friend...A once hot 25 year old chick you met at some wild party in 1995...Except the party is over, and the chick has aged 30 years and lost 3 quarters of her Spunk and personality. :D Retro game hunting and collecting can be a blast, but it can absolutely spew all over the new experiences you could be making with new games, or possibly even older games you've never played before(Be it stand alone or compilation releases) that got a new release on the Switch, which technically makes it 'in the now', which translates to a new experience. Because lets face it, Switch, PS5 & XSX are the 3 current console players in town. Plus, you cannot get that universal collective vibe-whatever feeling when playing older games on older consoles because we're no longer in the 80's & 90's, and they're decades old. I feel like I'm utterly alone, just knowing that I'm one of the two people on the planet spending my week-day night playing something like Boogerman on my Sega Genesis in 2024. ;) But when you fire up something like LOZ: Tears of the Kingdom on launch day, you feel like you're part of this one big collective/unified-thing knowing that millions of other people are experiencing it the same day you are, and then you can pop in online and discuss/share your experiences, and with friends if they're into gaming. It was the same deal with Super Mario World back in 1991, minus the internet & Social Media of course! :P

"Retro game hunting and collecting can be a blast, but it can absolutely spew all over the new experiences you could be making with new games" ...THIS cannot be stated enough. Hunting for games, collecting, storing/organizing your games.. man, this all takes up time. Why do we have wonderful memories of enjoying certain videogames when were kids? Because literally all we did is play videogames, sometimes to do death. That's how those great moments were made. Spending time on the collectibles hunt takes away time we could be creating more warm gaming memories. Yes, as you rightfully pointed it's not possible to recapture the nostalgia entirely. The 8-bit/16-bit glory days are gone forever and it will never be the same. But it is still possible to create a new kind of nostalgia made from the videogames we have today, if we just take the time to do so.

@IcarusKid842 ай бұрын
@@ogre706 Incoming Sea of text! :P I hear ya! There's definitely a LOT to digest once you wind up down that endless retro-rabbit hole. Everybody is on their own journey, people love what they love, and in the end you just have to do what brings you joy and happiness. For me personally, it was so much easier and a lot more focused when I was just sticking with what was new and current > Switch, and with a hint of PS5 & now Quest 3, making NEW memories with new experiences on current/new consoles. Yet once I really started diving back into that nostalgia, i winded up getting obsessed, and more often than not I found that my wallet was getting completely obliterated by nearly everything 8-16 bit console related. lol Some people can find a solid balance, but it's easy to lose control since nostalgia as everybody knows is one heck of a powerful drug. :P When we were kids way back when, we were focused on what was hot off the shelves, what was new and current back in the late 80's & 90's with NES, SNES, GEN, GameBoy, the Arcades(etc). Most of use weren't exactly dipping back generations prior and playing older games during those times with the Atari 2600 or ColecoVision. We were always moving on to the next best thing. The SNES for example, was already losing it's magic and freshness by the time the Saturn & PS1 arrived in late 95'. Heck, playing the SNES in 1999 was never the same. It was impossible trying to recapture the same feeling even at that point, compared to 1991 and on wards. :P But when you're taking on multiple older consoles & handhelds with multiple massive libraries, depending on the person, it can be stressful, incredibly expensive and feel like total baggage. It would of been so much easier had i started collecting in 2005+, when the retro boom started to kick off with NES, SNES etc. But i was always hesitant about doing it, just because i knew i wouldn't be able to recreate those amazing memories. Anyways, I find the best way to re-experience older games is with your kids or nieces if you have them, or with friends that grew up playing the same games at the same time as you did. OR maybe throw on a second TV on in the back ground(Playing Saved by the bell reruns haha) to make it feel like you've got company. :P That's exactly what Masahiro Sakurai does with his two big 65" 4K Screen set up, aside from having friends over and playing multiplayer on 2 separate screens. Works like a charm imo! Yet playing older games alone, on older consoles, on an older CRT, at least for me, usually makes me feel a bit empty! It truly was all about the human relationships we had back then. Many will agree that the best video game memories were always with friends. Video games, after all, are meant to be shared! ;) But life changes, technology changes, there's no more wow factor when booting up Donkey Kong Country like there was in 94' or playing Super Mario World for the first time etc. Mario 64 was obviously another jaw dropper in 96, but it looks like nothing these days. lol

I’ve had a lot of these thoughts about collecting for a while and it’s sort of manifesting in this way creatively with natural integrations. I know going into a game hunt what the episode will be focusing on in the video essay sections, so throughout the hunt I might throw in a line like “let’s think more about (etc)” and use that for transitions. I usually write the topics into a page and a half or so loose idea of a script and it takes me about 90 minutes to film it with the right cadence. Then I do the hunting narration separate. The hunt itself is just whatever shows up.
@KingYote2 ай бұрын
My best suggestion would be to narrow down 5-7 consoles that you love and look through their game lists or best gasmen lists and make your own list of 15-30 games you want. That way you’re more focused and it’s more satisfying to cross them off as you go.

Quick question, in your vast Nintendo 64 collection, do you own a Superpad 64 plus controller? These are made a little more like a PSX or PS2 controller with the trigger switch and the analog stick set on the left side of the controller. If you have one, or have tried playing on one, what's your opinions/impressions of it? I got one a few years back and I'm on the fence about it.
@MortsGarage2 ай бұрын

I can't totally decide if I like it or not. Some games, yes. But on games like Goldeneye, I like the feel of the original controller better. That might come from the fact that it feels a bit more like a pistol grip and I was brought up hunting and shooting. So I have a natural affinty for a pistol grip controller with games meant to mimic shooting. But I do like the lefthand analog stick for some games. I didn't pay a fortune for mine. And it is the clear body. And I like that 90's clear plastic esthetic. So I'll probably keep it and play with it more here and there.

For me , the biggest challenge for some reason is being ok with saying "no" to things and collecting things I actually like and want, rather than things just because they are collectible or hyped up. I am so much happier just collecting random things that bring me happiness, and not being a completionist, as I realized that doesn't make me happy but makes me competitive and frustrated for some reason.

Don't know how much this would count as a foreign film, but I'm a big fan of The Raid & The Raid 2. Both pre-John Wick era martial arts films, but while the films are from Indonesia the director Gareth Evans is Welsch. Also can never go wrong with the IP Man franchise as well. Essentially martial arts action is my jam for foreign films as they tend to have reduced dialog (not always) & tell their stories through movement (actors, camera, etc) instead of words.

I wish I were more cultures but I just like what can be best describe as college humour movies 😂😂😂 Super Bad is my jam. SNES had such a great library. It's probably my favorite retro console. We have ALL the games #emulation #everdrive Scott and I don't have the drive or desire to flip. All the stuff you mentioned that goes into it is just not for us. It's not an easy or simple endeavor. I am shocked you didn't love River City Girls. If you didn't play it co-op, it's a must! We loved 2 even more, haven't played zero yet.
@MortsGarage2 ай бұрын
I need to play it co-op! Okay - for foreign films, I have a recommendation for you: Amelie. The trailer doesn’t do it justice. It’s very French, visually spectacular, and sweet without being overly sentimental.

Spawn is actually an incredible action platformer. It’s made by the same dev team that created Hagane.
@MortsGarage2 ай бұрын
Really?? Rad!
@ChronoMoogle2 ай бұрын
@@MortsGarage Yep! Not a must-have, but definitely worth keeping if you are into hidden gems. The first few sections are a bit linear and feel like a normal brawler, but the level design gets more complex as you go. Just as Hagane, it’s tough as nails though, so it’s not for everyone.

That’s the frustrating thing about buying games now, everyone’s looking things up on eBay and other sites to determine THEIR price. Not saying you shouldn’t get what it’s worth, but at some point when you’re paying more (sometimes double or triple) what the thing was when new - that’s when it gets out of hand IMHO.

any addiction is rooted in trying to fill a hole with an external object to make us feel good, to me owning all the 64 games doesn't really make or break you....wont you just move on to collecting something else and then something else and then something else....seems like a never ending loop that we can find ourselves in... is our health getting this much energy from ourselves, is trying to be the best version of yourself being put on the back burner just to fill in these holes momentarily. I'm not hating, I have my own addictions that I'm looking to ascend, but at the end of the day I'm trying to be the best me so that I can be the best dad and best partner and best son possible. Life is about finding the best mate to pass on your genes and teach your offspring the tools they need to survive in their habitat. Is everything else just a distraction??? People usually don't think of the consequences of well intended activities/ideas, there is always a negative and positive reaction. I appreciate you contemplating the machinations of the mind as a video game collector

I have spent approximately $20,000 over the past 5 or so years buying only games that have nostalgia and/or what I consider something that's "cool" to me like cover art or theme, and now I'm burnt out. Plus I'm in the process of moving so I'm gonna have to tear down my game room and probably put much of my games in storage totes in a closet at my new place. Only gonna keep my Dreamcast, PS234, and OG Xbox in the living room.
