Kabbalah teaches that nothing can be known about the primordial, hidden realm of the Infinite (Ein Sof). A oneness beyond all comprehension, an eternality beyond all contemplation. Yet, out of that blindingly dark void stirs a vast contraction of light (tzimtzum) into which pours the cascading emanations of the divines essences (sefirot). Yet, one daring Kabbalist attempted to peer into the Shining Void of Ein Sof to discover what catalyzed Some-things from No-thing-ness. R. Israel Sarug's mystical speculations set upon the eternal, infinite Divine Delight (שעשוע - sha’ashua) as he attempted to combine the Kabbalistic systems of Moses Cordovero with Isaac Luria. Let's dive into some of the most profound mystical speculations of the 16th century Kabbalistic revolution.

Incredible video. The point about an outburst of laughter really struck a chord with me, as my own pet pleb ultimate answer to said question, "Why is there something rather than nothing?" is, and to be frank is as much a private joke as it is pleb speculation, "Because it's really, really funny"; but here you present a guy who all but says that with what I assume is a fair degree of seriousness. I'm not very deep into Kabbalah and I certainly can't read Hebrew but this video is kinda making me what to rethink putting at least a bit more effort into turn these stones over, if for no other reason than to give my private joke a stronger punchline and because this stuff feels like mystical crack being shot into my eyeballs. Thanks Doc, this one was a real banger.

As a queer agnostic white guy who knows zero Hebrew, I have no skin in this game, but as soon as I hear a prohibition about investigating the unknown, I sit up and take notice. It is deeply fascinating to hear what different cultures consider heresy, especially from the distance of like 600 years away, where they can't hurt me in particular. Unlike modern day. So thank you for the education and escapism in one!

The male-oriented sexual language in the primary texts underscores for me just how much of Jewish spiritualism has and continues to be male dominated. As a woman having grown up in a traditional Jewish community and having religious Orthodox family this has always been a bitterly sour aspect that I still struggle with. These things permeate Jewish spiritual practices today.

Dear Dr. Justin Sledge, I would like to express my deep appreciation for your video. Your work is remarkable for the clarity and depth with which you address complex topics in history, philosophy, and religion. The way you break down intricate concepts like Tzim Tzum, Tikun, and Shashua, and contextualize their impact on the development of Jewish spirituality, is truly enlightening. Your ability to synthesize and communicate these ideas makes an otherwise daunting field accessible to many. I am particularly grateful for your careful explanation of not only the theological foundations but also the historical and cultural significance of these mystical practices. Your commitment to providing well-researched and accessible content is an invaluable contribution to all those interested in the study of esotericism. Please continue your excellent work! Those descriptions of Ain soph are very aligned with the Kashmir shaivism's descriptions, the unity, love and bliss (delight) of the divine, plus the recognition of the triad within manifestation of knower knowledge and known... They don't have to come in contact with each other. It could be that they "walked the same road" bringing back the same experiences. These aren't ideas exchanged, but realities anyone could access (almost anyone) without coming into contact with others.
@Psiconauta-cabalista
@Psiconauta-cabalista Ай бұрын
@@frankjimenez4601 I fully agree with that. They don't need to have had contact. The experience of the divine is universal and can be accessed by all serious spiritual practices. It can also be accessed by any true seeker without any guidance. That's all correct. But this fact, is already evidence of that Wich is why I commented. But if there's academic agreement that they had no contact or it is extremely unlikely the evidence just got a 1000x authority and became that much more credible. So if anyone can confirm they didn't have contact, it's that much more beautiful in my eyes. But all you said is right.

Ein Sof is very similar to Amun. Amun means "hidden" and was considered to be transcendent and beyond human understanding. Ancient Egypt (Oxford, 1997), David P. Silverman, James P. Allen: "The creation theologies of Heliopolis and Memphis were each based on the pre-eminent Egyptian understanding of the gods as the forces and elements of the created world. Atum’s evolution explained where these components came from, and the notion of creative utterance explained how the creator’s will was transformed into reality. However, Egyptian theologians realized that the creator himself had to be transcendent, above the created world rather than immanent in it. He could not be directly perceived in nature like other gods. This “unknowability” was his fundamental quality, reflected in his name: Amun, meaning “Hidden”... Once Amun had been established as the greatest of all gods, his theology quickly assimilated those of the other religious centres, whose gods were seen as manifestations of Amun himself... The consequence of this view is that all the gods are no more than aspects of Amun. According to chapter three hundred: “All the gods are three: Amun, the sun and Ptah, without their seconds. His identity is hidden as Amun, his face is the sun, his body is Ptah.” Although the text speaks of three gods, the three are merely aspects of a single god. Here Egyptian theology has reached a kind of monotheism: not like that of, say, Islam, which recognizes only a single indivisible God, but one more akin to that of the Christian trinity. This passage alone places Egyptian theology at the beginning of the great religious traditions of Western thought."

23:57 wow, a great walk-through enlightenment and Kabbalah mysticism. Im tempted to associate Divine Delight to an aspect of self-awareness in a spiritual sense. Affirmations and events that renew and restore faith is the pparticular pleasing tickle i find similar. As if the infinitude took an impulsive gamble and things turned out rather well. Self-awareness is only found in relationships so it makes sense to understand life being some investigation into our being, through the eyes of divine essence. No real relationships outside this connection, or beyond the substance of our bonds in nature. That's if you take them into a spirit of devotion, this gets into first impulse arrangements, the first breath of expression, the contraction, and expansion i guess? The known, knower, and unknown become singular here if the first impulse is to awareness. It emerges as a duality of self-expression and expression of 'other'. The delight of shared experiences can't be overlooked, even if you become a divinely schizophrenic essence! A fractal nature does seem to guard against anything less than a well measured gaze into our passions. I believe the second impulse is to nature, that is to say our own impulsiveness. This obviously gets super complicated quickly but i feel it only matters how far we see ourselves from the light. In a dog eat dog world the complexities are overwhelming. This is why there are spiritual paths, an outlet for expression and release from the divine agonies of torment and passion. Such potent intimacies that even God needs somone else to undertake an adventure to discover if these are curses, or blessings, or curses and blessings all the way! Time then, is a complexity of divine impulsiveness, that's fractal and schizophrenic,...(take schizophrenic as impulsive second guessing oneself...or seeming to have a background check running all the time, like a psychic wife pointing out an/every obvious line). We kind of need that flexibility of mind to truly take on the psychic potential of species-wide sentience, the sensitivities we can develop and envelope growth in. An archetypal influence is awareness of 'other entities' and my imaginary reading of others views on the work im doing, the effort being made, and the deep veneration/grattitude/devotion/exuberance symbolised in this, those, these, and that. What if the nature of a higher spirit touches, meets my awareness znd being in this brief instance? What if I even just imagine it so and hold out no resistance to it? Why am i impulsed to know of god/s, if not from a sense of their subtle influences? Sorry everyone, for rambling, I hope it isnt all incoherent! I do love your work Justin, not only the scale, breadth, and depth of it. You have a divine approach and curiosity that isn't too ritual but more than placebo, at least i think that's what I see?!! We're all better for it thank you 🙏

While listening to this fascinating topic, I kept on thinking about Vajrayana Buddhism. Surely I'm not the only one. Do you know if there are comparison studies? As an aside, I found it fascinating that the knowledge "trinity" is in the original unity (forgive me, I don't know the cabalistic terms). The eternal polarity of Unity and Multiplicity, or order and chaos, seems to be like the Yang and Yin in the Tao, there is always both Multiplicity and Unity in all that exists. Thank you for the video. Namaste. 🙏

I have to say, the part at the end, about the language issues, seems rather apt, as tho I don't know hebrew well enough to do even a decent translation( I can barely ready most common phonetics of it, and only have understanding of a few to a couple hundred words, often keeping a dictionary handy when trying) I seem to detect from some documents definition drift due period and region of the authorship. I get a sense that there is a noticeable variation of the western(iberian) schools versus the northern(germanic), poilsh, and again for greek in this medieval period of work, and possibly see another divide between the pre to roman ones of babylon and egypt and jerusalem. with such work it is hard to say if this is intentional or artistic flair, or just some artifact of my view, trying to sort them all collate the works. It is variation within a culture of lingual self encryption with intent, probably sometimes for good reason, other times for complete obstinance.

This so reminds me of certain versions of the ancient Egyptian creation myth, with the world coming forth from the "issue" (as it were😉) of Ra. You don't hear many creation myths that begin with self-gratification, but there are a few out there...

I find it so interesting that basically all religious traditions consider infinity to be un understandable by humans. Modern Mathematics is in contrast just like "no I understand it just fine, actually it's a tool in my toolbelt"

With some effort, I usually manage to follow what Dr Sledge is talking about. However, this episode went completely over my head due to my unfamiliarity with the writings and terms being discussed.

Apropos of nothing, have you ever looked into the more eastern esoteric traditions? I'd love to hear your opinions on Daoism or the practical aspects of the teachings of the Buddha.

בסיד Thank you, Rabbi, for this hisgalus. If according to Sarug זיל man was mamash created from the actual seed of the Abishter of the Abishter 1. Does that make us gods/deities ? 2. Is our striving to return to our root mamash theosis...so we are really on godschool to become gods ourselves and create new worlds through our own divine delight ? Thank you for your time which is greatly appreciated. Should appreciate your guidance . Thank you so much .

One of my favourite topics and wonderfully presented as usual. Thanks, Justin. I browsed the bookstore the other week and felt like a kid in a candy store. Quick question: Do you ever see copies of the books presented in this video, or other early Kabbalah literature? Is it possible to make requests or place pre-orders on anticipated titles? Thanks.

I'll forever be confused and incredulous as to how people go from "this story I made" to "this is the objective TRUTH". Especially for the more... out there, versions of our history. Pople and peoples are remarkable for how they're able to build and rebuild entire worlds like that.

@@Ghgdggkppkdaaa when it gets crazy enough that you can only use mathematics to prove, explain, and predict the past/present/future and how space and time itself is malleable and fizzy and those distinctions don't always make sense - yup, that's a decent amount of crazy.
