The Hidden Gear on the John Deere 2510

Only 8 Forward gears and 2 Reverse eh? Well turns out that is not actually the case, there is actually 8 forwards and 3 reverse gears. The 3rd reverse gear is considered "dangerous" and is not supposed to be use and is actually not listed nor mentioned, but does exist.

The 3rd reverse is for a mounted cotton picker which when mounted on the tractor, it was operated backwards. The high reverse is a road gear.

It is only accessible because your shifting mechanism is worn. All SyncroRange transmissions basically have 4 ranges with a low, high & reverse gear in each one. Deere made the Reverse inaccessible in the 3rd and fourth ranges on some models, most likely for safety reasons. If your mechanism was not worn, you could make the 3rd range reverse accessible by filing the stop on the shifting drum for the 3rd range to match the depth of the ones of the 1st & 2nd range. Some models came from the factory with the 3rd reverse accessible, namely 10 series models.

Our 4010 & 3010 had 3rd reverse marked as such, 2510 not marked. Used 2510 on loader loading hay bales from accumulator so I trimmed notch open to use 3rd reverse. Some said 3rd reverse was in my 4020 & 3020 but I never tried it.

Well I would think for sure it was in the 3020, a 2510 has a 3020 rear end. Makes me wonder if there is a 4th reverse then though?

Never have ran a 3010, but I would assume that it was the same. Our 4010 has the 3rd reverse. Some of the 4020s and 3020s were probably locked out of 3rd reverse, but anyone can take it apart and take the lock out. I find that while moving hay I tend to used 7th gear and then 3rd reverse. 3rd reverse is a little fast, but as long as you pay attention to what you're doing and don't have the tractor running at too high of an RPM, it works fine.

It is supposed to be the same way on 2510 as well, but with a little jiggling and thanks to some wear that gear now is accessible on the 2510.

I heard that if you grind the notch out on the counsel in the 6-8 range you can get a fourth reverse!!! 15 MPH in reverse sounds dangerous!!! this is only possible with the 10 series tractors by the time they came out with the 20 series they out in the shift plates.

I was wondering if you could! I agree though 15 mph in reverse doesn't sound safe! My grandpa's Case backhoe was that way though with shuttle shift, had forward and reverse in every gear and I think reverse was faster than the foward gear!

Sean Drake it’s just a model number it doesn’t mean HP or anything but what you can count on is the larger the number the larger the tractor. A 2510 is smaller than a 3010 and so on

They say it came with that from the 3020 trans they used but they thought it was to much for 2510's. but it was easier to use the existing trans but no sticker on the shifter.

2510 is a mutant 2020 front end with a 3020 rear if I recall correctly.

There is a reverse on all 4 selectors. Body panels prevent them from being used. Don't believe me strip the cover off the shifter and shift 4th reverse.

Our 4010 had this 3rd reverse marked but our later model 4020 you couldn't shift into this one.

That reverse is in all the transmissions........ It was used when the tractor was operated with an add on cotton picker.....But if the distance to be travelled was far the driver would get in the seat under the platform and rin in 8th foward

Oh high speed reverse like the 2010. The only thing I can think that would be good for is a no reversible plow. You could back down the field instead of turning around.

Yep same as the 2010, though your not supposed to use that gear. Also almost all plows around here are not reversible. Just requires a different plowing technique.

To my understanding the linkage isn’t supposed to let you shift into that gear.

​@radozeman 3rd reverse was blocked off after a certain model year, can't remember which specifically. This was due to too many operators breaking the gearset inside the transmission. Prior to that year 3rd reverse was standard even on the 20 series. My parents had 1 3010, 5 3020's, and a 4020 all with 3rd reverse from the factory.

Drain on the bottom of the radiator if you can get it open, also should be one on the side of engine block.

It's not a safety thing so much as there's something weak in the transmission that causes 3R failures in the 10 and early 20 series. So, in typical cost-cutter fashion, change the sleeves in the shifter so you can't access 3R, and it magically goes away. BUT, says accounting, you've got a whole half a zillion of those sleeves already stamped and on hand. Ya gonna throw 'em all away? So someone has a brilliant idea to use 'em all up, and just change the label and nobody'll notice. Yeah....oops LMAO
