Riddles skirted around the laws, people had to be careful what they published or wrote down. We have circled back to this time on this platform where a lot of us have to speak in ‘riddles’ to skirt around what we want to say.

Yes, that’s very true, back in history they were very cleaver with their riddles. I remember sometime in the 90’s someone used this form of speech to create a whole alien culture for a si-fi story, where a conversation took place which left many who were there puzzled at what was being talked about. As the gentleman who had the conversation started to tell his companions in normal speech as to what was really said. Left me laughing but the sad truth is back then you had to talk in riddles so as to not be charged with treason.

It seems to me that Lewis Carroll’s depiction of Humpty as an egg lends some credence to the “riddle” hypothesis, but I have always liked the Colchester story. It’s the sort of event that could easily pass into folk lore, witnessed, as it was, by a whole army. One wit makes up the rhyme and next thing everybody’s reciting it. Then the kids get hold of it and it passes down through the generations.

I lived and grew up in Colchester for most of my life. I knew the rhyme as Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, He had a great fall, all the king's horses and all the King's men could not put Humpty Dumpty back together again. I have shortened the rhyme slightly, but the important parts are here. Colchester is surrounded by a defensive wall built by the Romans. Much of it has disappeared for various reasons, much of it was likely used for building houses or even roads. To the East of Colchester just within the Roman wall is a church called St Mary on the wall. Colchester came by accident a Royalist town during the Cromwellian wars because a Royalist detachment was faced by a large detachment of Cromwellian troops. The Royalists made for Colchester and locked themselves inside the town, which still had its high Roman walls and several entrance gates. To the North of Colchester, there are many acres of common land fields, known locally as the Hilly fields. Incidentally, this is the site of the original settlement which the Romans inhabited and which Bodicea burnt down. The Hilly fields where the Cromwellian troops set up their guns to bombard the town but it was too far away to be really effective. The Royalists set up a massive cannon called Humpty Dumpty on the top of the bell tower of St Mary on the wall. From there they had a great vantage point to see and fire at the Cromwellian troops to the North or the East London road. Royalist cannon shot can still be found if one digs down in the hilly fields. The Cromwellian troops brought up their biggest guns, (cannon,) from London to the Hilly Fields, just out of range of Humpty Dumpty. They then proceeded to blow Humpty Dumpty off the top of the church tower. The original tower was built of stone. Today it is clear that the missing top of the tower was eventually rebuilt with brick. Therefore, Humpty Dumpty sat on top of a wall. ( actually on top of the church tower of St Mary on the wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. (Knocked off by the Cromwellian big guns) All the King's horses and all the king's men could not put Humpty Dumpty back together again. Because the top of St Mary's church tower had been demolished. I have no idea why the King's horses are included, possibly only to fill up the rhyme. Soon after this, the Royalists surrendered.

Ipetgoat2 the tower fell just outside the vaggy that christ exited. Some interpretations say Trump's outline can be seen on the inside left of the vaggy. The coup de ta king. Trump also made video of him seated in his copter to left of the Twin Towers just prior to collapse. Both the cannon and Richard III make sense. Richard III had a bad case of scoliosis, so he would have had a hump-backed appearance. At the battle of Bosworth field, there were actually three armies. The third one waited on the sidelines to see who was winning, then joined the side who would likely take the battle. He had many men and horses at his disposal, but in the end, he was struck from his horse and killed in a brutal fashion. The two boys in the Tower of London were believed killed and buried in the wall of the Tower. I read that those remains may have been found recently, which furthers the "wall" part of the story.

There are also historical references where the Tudors had control of the Tower of London when the princes disappeared. Richard had no heirs since his only son died. The Tudor lineage was from John of Gaunt. As an illegitimate line they had no right to the crown but by might. The Rolls of Parliament for Richard’s reign showed only a well maintained kingdom. After their deaths the citizens of York petitioned the Pope to make Richard and his wife martyrs.

In America the rhyme was changed to "all the kings horses and all the kings men couldn't put humpty together again" I was taught it was a reference to the Revolutionary War and Humpty Dumpty was King George. The fall was losing the war and putting it back again was reference to losing the colonies. This is very fascinating. I am in my 70s. Having been taught this version as a child.

That is true. Edward IV Was a bigamist, being pre- contracted to marry Lady Eleanor Butler, therefore his offspring were all illegitimate. None of these children could inherit the crown, so no reason to kill them, although Henry Tudor could have had more reason to do so, given his claims were flimsy at best.

I'm Canadian, yet I was born and raised in Colchester U.K. I always thought that "Humpty Dumpty" was either a culverin or heavy mortar, emplaced on the Roman Wall by the "Balkerne Gate," which faces west towards London. The connection back to Richard III is fascinating as well, though your description of the battle is somewhat simplistic. One of Richard's magnates, Lord Stanley commanded a "battle" (about one-third) of Richard's Army. Ironically, Stanley was married to Henry Tudor's mother. The Tudor forces were much weaker and would have been annhilated had it not been to Stanley's treachery. He refused to enter the fray when to deliver the coup d' grace against the Tudor army. Instead, he switched sides and rode against his King. Richard died while hewing his way to Henry. After the battle Lord Stanley placed Richard's crown on Henry's head. Interestingly, while Richard was not a direct descendent of Edward IV, he was the younger brother of the previous King. Henry Tudor's claim to the throne via his mother was that one of his ancestors had been a chamber maid to a previous King. And the rest is, as we say, Tudor propaganda.

I'd like to see your take on "Billy Boy," which I believe refers to the (1641) union of William II of Orange (age 15) and Mary, daughter of Charles I (age 9). There is a painting depicting the couple: Betrothed William and Mary by Anthony van Dyck, 1641.

Errrr. I read that this was at the start of the Second Civil War, when the ultra-Royalist Kent Militia quickly crossed the Thames Estuary and captured Colchester Castle, with the same gun, or a device that was supposed to repel cannon balls, that had the name "Humpty-Dumpty" because of its squat, dumpty appearance. And the derisive reference to The King. But the siege was not funny! A mortar shell hit a tower in the outer defences that was used as the defenders' magazine. The explosion destroyed several blocks of Colchester town, killing hundreds of people. Indeed Colcester and its siege has been described as 'England's Stalingrad'!!!
@dawsie
@dawsie Жыл бұрын
I never heard of it referred to Stalingrad, that must be a very new reference in the past few decades, but as to the canon there was a canon of that name and it use to be there, there use to be tour trips done back in the 70’s which talked about that part of history as we walked around the town.

I've long wondered why Humpty Dumpty is invariably portrayed as an egg when there's no mention of eggs whatsoever in the actual rhyme, let alone him being one, except in parodies that end with a line to the effect of "Who cares? It's only an egg". Meanwhile, one of my kids has lately come up with his own version where Humpty does get put back together again, because who doesn't like a happy ending?

I was under the impression that cannon balls used to be oblong/egg shaped, and so they called cannon balls, eggs. This evolved into people associating the egg with the rhyme instead of the cannon.

Why, they have found King Richards body and it was proved that it was his body. And yes he was twisted in body which back in that time period would have also twisted his mind. Archeologist have spent decades going through all of the written history with the aim to find King Richard, because of this they finally found him and yes they were able to do DNA testing because his brothers body was used to make the comparison. I remember our history teacher referring to the old nursery rhyme in class referring to king Richard back in the 70’s

Another story is that Humpty Dumpty was the nickname of a sharpshooter,also known as One Eyed Thompson,who was perched high on St Mary's Tower at the time of the action.Others say that the rhyme refers to the Royalist siege of Gloucester,not the Parliamentarian siege of Colchester.Still others say that the origin of the rhyme is French and it was not linked to the English Civil Wars at all until years after the Second World War.Perhaps the military historian Mark Felton,born and brought up in Colchester,will try to clear up the confusion one day.

I am thinking that, too. And if Humpty Dumpty was also the name of an alcoholic drink in the 1690's, there is also a connection to the Glorious Revolution - there was a meeting at a small pub called the Cock and Pynot in Old Whittington, Chesterfield where the plans for it were first laid out.

Love your videos - okay, the two I’ve watched so far! I like the history of these old rhymes - have done reading and research in the past. I read the unabridged Brother’s Grim when I was a pre-teen. Nothing cheery about those stories. When I got to Canada at 18, I was dismayed at the dumbing down of nursery rhymes and stories. Great start, can’t wait to see and hear more.

Another great video. Many thanks to the team. This is an interesting one to theorise about. I think it originated as you depicted, following the war. The victory would have been the talk of the land. Wit takes over. Pretty soon everyone is saying this little ditty and it’s very funny for the day bc it celebrates a great victory. I think it fits for the time. Then it’s feasible for humans to use something that was funny to fit something that is of similar ilk. Why not in history? I don’t think it would be too much of a surprise to find that the rhyme could have been used a second time round when Richard was killed. As for the egg persona, I think this comes from the fermentation of fat people and the egg shape. So he thought about the egg ( man ) . Humpty Dumpy as we know him today. A great story. Many thanks for sharing. As for the Rhyme itself, it would have to be one of those gems ❤

It's said that "Humpty Dumpty" was, in fact, a cannon, but unlike the usual cannon that had a wheeled carriage, "Humpty Dumpty" had to be supported on a wall or stable surface. The metal from which "Humpty Dumpty" was made was of such poor quality that upon the very first firing, "Humpty Dumpty" shattered into fragments and fell to the ground from where it was placed. The cannon was deemed irreparable.
