The Hidden History of Shuai Jiao is a multi-part series that will present the history of modern Chinese Shuai Jiao, examining the commonly spread history to separate fact from fiction through the lens of evidence, history, and logic.
Kungfu Explained #08 - The Hidden History of Shuai Jiao - Part Three
Following on episode two, in this third and final episode we look into the the origin of the Shan Pu Ying, the structures of the Qing givernment and its banner system and the actual roots of Shuai Jiao in totality.
Once again, a huge shoutout to Alex Xian Zhao, and his research into this subject, on which much of this series was inspired and based on.

So cool that you studied the culture and history of a martial art to a point where you even studied the Mongolian loanwords in Manchu language! During watching your video, I realized a connection between the Mongolian verb for that dance before wrestling “magsihu” and the Manchu word for dancing “maksimbi”. Its nominal form is ‘maksin’, transcribed in Chinese as 莽式.

Another great lesson. Thank you! I was involved in a Baoding Shuai Jiao school for nearly a year in Germany. A prior injury to one of my knees, leaving it a bit unstable, didn't allow me to continue. The back-leg-straight approach to the sweeping throws was just too dangerous and I kept re-injuring the knee. Broke my heart to leave it. I had already had many years of practice in another system of Kung Fu, and if I try to execute a throw nowadays, it will be hip throw or a short sweep without straightening the leg. It's not as powerful or fast but it can get the job done if I'm careful.

It is pretty clear that the modern day Shuai Jiao originated from Manchu buku(wrestling) of the Qing dynasty. Some wrestling techniques in Shuai Jiao still have their Manchu terms, such as “dehele”(transcribed in Chinese as 得合勒) which comes from a Manchu verb dehelembi, meaning ‘to hook’. Trying to connect Shuai Jiao to other older wrestling forms in China is, as you said, a myth.

Indeed, actually the term 'dehe' comes from the mongolian word for a hook / hook shape. As per Rozycki's research, the word's origin is Khalkha mongolian, and its adoption into Manchu was more recent in general terms. The technique in Bokh uses this name (dege).

It's pretty funny, but when you look at shuai jiao manuals, a lot of them mention Chi You, Yue Fei or some other form of wrestling that has little to do with Shuai Jiao. As I wrote in my thesis, it's like claiming soccer is related to ancient Chinese cuju.

Ma Liang is a very important figure in understanding Chinese martial arts today, but the politics of the 20th C mean he is seldom actually discussed (only changing recently). People don't even accept that he set up the Shuai Jiao program and the Central Guoshu and invited Chang Dongsheng to attend the program

@@MuShinMartialCulture Speaking of the world's most famous Shuai Jiao champion( Chang dong sheng), why in all your episodes to you only give him maybe five seconds of exposure. Does it have to do with him being a practitioner of the style of shuai Jiao you make funn of in this video? If you don't believe in h" hiding" history, tell us all what happened when he wrestled " hukil" the mongol wrestling champion.
