7:42 - The pig symbol like the mask and squeals actually means to be “reborn” in China and Korea that’s why in the kidnappings , Jigsaw chooses to use a pig mask to show a chance of being reborn. He’s background mentioned being involved in a Chinese pig celebration day and that’s where he got it from. It wasn’t about being called a pig as a insult

I didn't know about the "rebirth" meaning, that's really interesting. But the origin of the mask only came in years after the first movie was released, so I didn't include for a Saw 1 video. Also these were just my interpretations, it's entirely possible that they were never intended that way... it just stood out to me that way.

Also, Saw is such a great title for the first movie. It obviously doesn't have the same impact on the later ones, but for the first movie? Amazing. We have the actual saws, but we also have the fact that Jigsaw watches the games. This completely escaped me when I was a kid (English isn't my first language and I first watched the movie when I was pretty young) and I just keep finding things that amaze me with this movie. The first movie especially has so many "hidden" things that you'll only really get if you watch it more than once. It's incredible to see a movie that, despite the years that has passed, is as scary today as it was when it first released.

I admit I'm a fanboy of the movie because in an era of larger than life hulking dudes, Jigsaw was the opposite, a frail old man who was deadly because of his mind, not his body. The dude weaponized intellect instead of brawn, and I liked that. The sequels? *wavers hand* By the time Saw 3D came out it was basically its own fever dream of the Saw universe at that point.

Unknowledgeable is a very big understatement. I’d go with straight up stupid. You take 5 seconds to look at the traps and you could figure them out. They don’t have to be engineers it’s crude mechanisms. But I agree with you that they definitely should have some people who can beat the traps not win them.

This was a great analysis! I especially liked your point about the victims being the focal point and sympathetic. That seems to be a preferred approach for Leigh Whannell. Not only is that the exact way he chose to make The Invisible Man story feel fresh, you also see this with the victims in Saw III moreso than the later sequels that he wasn't involved with. We don't know much about Troy, but we spend the majority of the first act of the movie with Kerry, learning about her emotional state in the time since the previous movie. Then we see Jeff's game and not only is he written very sympathetically, but the three people he attempts to save are all presented as a lot more human than most throwaway victims in later films, even the drunk driver. We see his feelings of guilt and anguish, which is a pretty stark contrast to Saw IV where the people who die in Rigg's game are a sex trafficer who would rather kill than be arrested, a rapist, an abusive father and husband, and a corrupt lawyer, none of whom are really humanized beyond those traits.

I loved the first Saw movie, it is different from the others.. I remember seeing it the first time and i was legit terrified of the scenario of waking up in a dark cold room with chains around my ankle, and a dead body on the floor.. Just imagine that for a second, why am i here? How do i get out? No-one knows im here.. Just the mystery itself, was legit very scary the first time i saw (No pun intended) this movie.. Maybe, just maybe this is something that can happen to you in real life?… this movie was so cool and creepy.. loved it

The first saw movie is great because its not just a gore fest, its the phycological horror when the movie (even if it directly tells you what will happen) keeps you thinking "what if?" And the anticipation of things like having Dr.Gordan saw off his own foot (as apose to a violent trap that will kill you in one minieut) gives the first saw movie that horror that is evened out in the end.

I get that ppl love the first movie and a lot of ppl dont like the other's. But I actually love the other's more cus I watch for the gore and brutality of the traps. It's fun to watch how creative the traps are and how difficult they get, kinda leaves u thinking "could I survive that?" I like the diversity of games. There are ones that make u hurt yourself, ones that make u choose who lives, ones require u to work together, and ones that make u compete with eachother. I also love that every movie has a twist and as the movies progress, u are shown more about the origin story and how the whole jigsaw perona with all the brutal motives came to be.

I feel you. I'm a big fan personally of Jigsaw and V* because I seem to really enjoy the group based traps and having the people have to work in communication with each other and having them as their barriers to freedom as well as their own personal vices and it's such a beautiful mix I wish there was more of them or more movies that play off like that. The traps plus group dynamics is just great and I know that opinion is in the minority. Each of the films since really did give a different audience from the first a ride into the franchise and give their own things, some better than others, but doing all similar yet different things. It's interesting and cool. Agree on the Jigsaw persona info is a good bonus throughout. Love that lore. *I know the house "trap" exists but that felt a lot different than the other two in how the group dynamics worked and felt a lot more open so it didn't give me the same feeling but I'm glad it exists since it's probably in part why the others were made.

@@sprite3351 A movie is a work of entertainment. Story isn't technically required, but those movies do have stories, and sometimes a story is character interactions and the conflict between them. Conflict is one of the basic form of story telling. So literally both V and Jigsaw gave me a story. Is it good? Sure, it entertained me and that's all that really matters. I enjoyed myself watching the films. It's entertainment. Movies and entertainment don't always have to be that deep. Sometimes you just want to enjoy some gore with a basic story.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who noticed that , it was a horrifying scene to me as a kid .. even the Smoke was a light green, I know nobody prefers the color "Green" for a lightbulb , so I knew right then it was a visual message even though I was only around 13 And the way I kept seeing this color in the movie had me instantly thinking "oh here comes the color of death.." when I saw it for the last time at the end of the movie , And if you pay close attention , the second movie was almost completely themed Yellow , and almost anytime that door of damnation was re-opened through the series it was a yellow shading , starting from when Eric escaped the bathroom after crushing his heel

How about the old lady and young guy in Saw 6 "Gallows Trap"? They were picked because of contrasts - she was old and sick with a loving family, he was young and healthy but introverted. Or the wife in Saw VII "Brazen Bull" - she didn't even know her husband was lying about surviving a trap, she was just a devoted wife helping the man she loved overcome trauma. Lots of others in the series too. They didn't even do anything WRONG, let alone criminal.

I would argue what Amanda has to do is even more scarring than what other victims face. She has to kill someone, which is not an easy thing to do. It obviously spares her the pain of sawing your own foot off but it leaves lasting scars in her brain. Might even make her join the killer if we're not careful...

Tbh I think even the actors look more natural and like 'normal' people in the first movie. The later the movie came out the more perfect actors and actresses would like (clothing, make-up etc.). In the first their get up is more casual and simple. I think that's often the case with 'older' movies and I like that because instead of following perfectly mannequin like people in older movies the people look more like people you'd actually see in real life.

The editing style of the Saw films is not merely for show. It’s meant to convey the emotional state of the characters. The editing in the Saw films is used in tandem with its stellar musical direction and sound design to help emphasize the characters emotions. It always has been. I’ve seen far too many people only praise the first film and completely write off the sequels as inferior just because they’re not like the first film. Of course they’re not like the first film. Trying to make the sequels like the original wouldn’t work, so the filmmakers have to try another angle. The sequels are all good in their own right. Sure, some are better than others, but none of them are truly bad like so many people dismiss them as. I went into this hoping you’d be able to recognize this, but you’re no different from the rest. You’ve disappointed me.

I've never seen someone so off the mark with the pig masks. They represent the year of the pig in the chinese zodiac, pigs symbolising rebirth of sorts, which is why Johns apprentices wear them- they were 'reborn' in his eyes in order to become an apprentice in the first place, as John was also 'reborn' and realised how fragile life is after his car accident that spurred this whole thing on. We see in one of the movies (can't remember which one) that the first victim of John was actually kidnapped at a festival for the year of the pig, by putting chloroform in the mask and holding it over the victims face, using the massive crowd to his advantage for it to go unnoticed by bystanders. The whole idea of the games in John Kramers eyes is that people must suffer and be reborn from it in order to appreciate their life. Also to add- Amandas trap makes perfect sense. She has a history of self harm which John probably knows about, asking her to hurt herself would be too easy, as she's already doing it, but asking her to hurt someone else in order to live? That's different, she's never had to do that, the only person she's been hurting is herself and because of that, she has to now inflict pain onto others if she doesn't want to die.

i think that saw works because first, is not a fantasy tale like the thing or predator, there isnt any superhuman monster or alien, it just a old man with his minions, and all the traps could realistically be made by an engineer with the required equipment, and 2, people are more afraid of suffering than dying, no one wants to die but the idea of suffering pain is horryfying on its own, i think that the inverse bear trap is the most iconic trap for that, you dont want your head to be ripped off because it will kill you, but not instantly.

I was thinking, the reverse bear trap mask on Amanda was made by John almost in the beginning of his ''game'' so why is it so rusty? He could have used an old bear trap as a base but shouldn't the new parts that form the mechanism be new or at least not covered in rust? While I don’t disagree with you in the case of the Saw films, sometimes having a nice, warm, inviting environment works so well in horror films. It’s so jarring when there’s a comfortable environment but unspeakable horrors that you can’t help but be on edge. Also, pigs are scary! They’ll eat anything, including corpses, and they’re not too fussed if the body isn’t quite dead yet. Being eaten by pigs has to be a nasty way to go so I’d say they can be scary.

I could be mistaken but I believe the bathroom segment was written and filmed by two college students and that it was pitched to the publishers and that it was then turned into the first Saw movie and if that’s true, I think that could be another reason as to why it is different than its sequels.
