So today I'm test driving a Tiptronic Carrera S to see if it's any good. But the car has a hidden past, and I was really shocked (but happy) when i found out.
Its a 997 Carrera S in Riviera blue (not to be confused with Mexico or Miami Blue) and it has a Tiptronic Gearbox.

My 2008 911 TT is in tiptronic. I use it in manual mode every time I drive. It’s never in auto. My wife is the only one who uses the auto. Would I prefer stick? Absolutely. But when you finally talk the wife into buying a 911 Turbo and she agrees but says it has to be auto you just cave.

I have had three 911's with a manual. My present C4s is a tip and I love it. Once you factor the speed of gear change and get used to it there are no issues and brilliant in town.

Riviera blue is my favourite Porsche colour, but I now have Guards Red - which I also love. I'd choose Tiptronic only because Porsche clutches are too heavy for me to use much. Good review as always and pleased to receive your continued content Satch.

Great little review - think you hit the nail on the head regarding the tiptronic. My 997 base Carrera is tiptronic and I think it's great unless you want to race it. Around town it's great to have the automatic mode. Looking forward to the next review. Cheers.

The tiptronic is faster 0 to 100 on the 997 than the manual. But manual is faster after 100.

Gorgeous color on the car. My 997 is a tiptronic and I have to admit when I first got it I wasn't overly in love with it. But now that I've driven it for awhile it's not bad at all. I have a Challenger with paddle shifters and I really like it. My only real complaint about the tiptronic is the shifters. I don't like the buttons. I know there are upgrades to put a paddle shifter wheel in it but it's way too expensive. Thanks for the video Satch. Good luck with the next one.

I tried both manual and tip. I liked the tip the most . If you live in the city and almost never go on a race track than the tiptronic is the one to pick! I have a 997.1 turbo

Porsche 997 Tiptronic.. The box has adaption values with 250 maps available. In order to get into the fastest map, you need to instruct it. You do this by quickly stamping on the fast pedal twice in succession. Just quick stabs basically. Then it is in max shift mode. Driving with PSM off will be quicker because the tip box is affected by this. But only do this if you are comfortable. Launch is basically using the stall limit of the torque converter - left foot brake while building the revs to around 2500rpm - when you feel the car struggling to stay still release the brake whilst flooring the fast pedal. This gives you maximum launch. The box always starts in comfortable mode. If you drive it around town for a period of time it will take time for the adaption values to adjust to more aggressive style. Use the tip of the double pedal stamping to move to fast mode. You should find 3rd gear the best as it tops at around 125-130mph depending on whether you are in manual mode / PSM on or off. 2nd is good for around 73mph. Ken 997 tip box has unlimited shift patterns calculating which is best according to your driving style, the second generation 996 box had 250 shift patterns. If driving in D, when approaching a corner or doing a roll on, quickly stomp on the accelerator and it will drop gear. If you want to do a good launch either having it in manual 1 or just left in D, brake boosting is best, left foot on brake and right foot on accelerator holding rev to where you feel comfortable but normally around 3k rpm. What i've noticed once you've done this a couple of times the box will start in 1st even if driving in D If hooning around country lanes use manual mode to hold gears.

If the tiptronic feels sluggish then it’s almost certainly needing a gearbox service (oil & filter). Cost between £300 & £400. It needs to be done on a level ramp to get the levels correct. I had mine done last Monday. Before it felt like it was slurring the gear changes, now it’s back to feeling crisp. It’s well worth doing! 🤔

I loved driving my manual 996 C2…but lets face it, manuals are a pain in the ass in stop-go traffic, and at my age, I’m loving the ease and convenience of driving a PDK equipped 997.2 Targa 4S-still a blast to drive. Definitely prefer the Speed Yellow over the blue. Pity it was changed.

Dig the color, brings back memories of a '74 Miami blue Audi Fox I had when I was a 21 YO and got my first real job as an apprentice electrician in a molybdenum mine in Colorado way back in '77. It was my first German car and actually quite cool for it's day. Got to take it out on ski trips over some of the mountain passes in the state and learned how to drive in it. Now I have a 2K 996 that I have driven over all those same roads, ah well, I'm so lucky, I've spent all my money on cars, skiing, concerts, chasing women and wasted the rest of it on rent and bills, Tom from Flagstaff.

The sport chrono plus is a great option for the Tiptronic S. Changes Maps on g/b and Increases the speed of change in both directions. Adding flappy paddles also makes a huge difference to the feel.

Love the fact that in the UK there are great colours like Speed Yellow and Riviera Blue - over here in Australia, we have too many blacks, silvers and whites. I don't think I have even seen a 991 in red ever.

My boxster S snapped a spring but it settled back in the housing so you couldn't tell, but it was obviously a bit lower on one side. I replaced all 4 after that.

The car obviously was not set up properly. We have an alignment platform, and o all of our own setups and corner balancing. Ride height is measured from various points on the suspension, so this should be checked. Anytime work is done on th suspension, alignment and cross weight needs to be checked. Does the car seem to sit level when viewing it from the back? If not, that much difference could really affect stability at high speeds.

It sits higher on the drivers side, the passenger side is correct. I need to inspect it properly this week so I’m sure it will all become clear.

Triptronic in my 997 it’s ok to cruise around but for a more spirited drive you can’t beat a manual......as for uneven gap on the rear my money is on a broken spring Good to see you back fella looking forward to more videos 👍

+ 1 for broken coil spring on the low ride side. 997 known for them. I had one go on my Carrera week after I bought it.. they rust and then crack. Should be easy to spot.

I fitted H&R springs on my 997.1 they lower roughly 1” all round as I think the 997 sit to high on the back With 15mm spacers on the rear and 7mm spacers on the front car will look so much better.....but remember wheel alignment👍

If you plan to use your car as a daily driver then tiptronic/pdk is a great choice. If you mainly drive for the enjoyment of driving one of these fine machines then it has to be manual.

Steve Cade I daily manuals and prefer the control over PDK or auto. Key point 35mph speed limit easy to hold in 3rd or 4th no brakes needed.

I'm like you - old school manual gearbox geek. When I look for a new replacement vehicle if it's without a manual transmission, I look no further. The manual gearbox and the art of manual gearbox usage is about 90% of my driving enjoyment experience. Unfortunately, for those like me, the manual gearbox is following the dinosaur route for new production vehicles. What shame. BTW, my vote is speed yellow in terms of color.

I have no probs with aTip. I’ve had manual and PDK 911s in the past (and a 991 now). Recently had a 996 4S Tip for 18 months and it was fine. I read recently that the box is adaptive, with 5 maps. A double tap on the accelerator pedal is supposed to switch it straight into the sportiest map. Anyone able to confirm that? Also remember reading when the 996 Turbo came out that it suited the car better than manual.

I'm not sure about the double tap, there's no doubt though that if you accelerate or brake hard for a few seconds it does very quickly change into Sport mode automatically. I think it's a great gearbox.

p jay two blips of the throttle shifts down two gears, that is correct. There is a lot of info out there on how to drive tiptronic properly. Although I have not proven it, I read somewhere, tip is actually faster than a six speed from 0 to 60. I never drive in the auto mode.

@@rodgraff1782 I think that 0-60 thing only applies to the Turbo because it allows you to accelerate without lifting the throttle so you don't get any turbo lag during the gear change. I can't think why it would change down as a result of blipping the throttle, that seems like totally unwanted behaviour to me. There is an extra bit of throttle travel when you completely floor the accelerator, like most autos, that can be used to initiate kickdown. I would add that, given the difficulty and brutality required to match the ultimate 0-60 time for a manual that a Tip may well be quicker off the line in the real world, and it will be repeatable all day long, unlike with a manual. I doubt you'll find anyone that's prepared to launch their manual 997.1 repeatedly at maximum acceleration whereas the Tip will do it without any complaints.

Just a idea: The Car does have PASM, right? At my 997.1 the hight is about three fingers with PASM off and 2 fingers with PASM on. But if it is PASM related, you would feel it in the way the "booty shakes".

​@@chrisglover2133 I own a 2004 997 C2 S. If i toggle the PASM switch it lowers itself by 1cm. I measured myself. In some german forums they are user arguing about the 1cm lowering of the PASM beeing nessesary to drive 300kp/h. Back in 2004 you could order the car wit the PASM Bilstein suspension (normal 0cm lowered, PASM 1cm lowered) or the Bilstein sportsuspension (2cm lowered). [If you do not believe me look at the drivers manual page 257 where the car dimensions are listed.]

OK so i've just been to check it again. In the garage under the flourescent lights i can clearly see the difference yes, but when its out in the natural light it looks flawless. Odd really but you are right.

I’ve had a PDK, Tiptronic and a Manual in various Porsche models (Carera S, Gt3, GT4). I would never ever buy a tiptronic ever ever again. Slurry, slow, rubbish. Does not suit this type of car at all. The other 2, brilliant (pdk must have paddles on steering! Manual is best imo)

The 997 tiptronic is awful. Before I bought my manual 997 6 years ago, I test drove a Tiptronic and was totally put off the 997. Few months later I tried the manual and saw the light. Sluggish, numb and just plain awful. It’s no PDK, just an automatic with buttons.

mac daddy maybe you didn’t know how to take all the advantages of the tip. What did you do, leave it in the auto mode? it will take off in 2nd gear if you drive it like that. I had to put wider wheels and tires on the back of my 993 tip, because it kept breaking away, even with a limited slip. I only drive in the manual mode, and really like the car

The paint is not that good and I have not seen it in person. What the speed yellow is showing on the sun roof is. Someone did not do a good respray on the car!!!! Your friend should have asked that question. Why is the suspension so far off. Did he he get a great discount on the price??? He should have. I would not buy it!!!!
