The list of jobs is finally getting shorter. For a while there, the list was growing faster than we could cross items off, but that worry is nearly in the rearview. This week were getting up to speed on all the work that has happened in the background of the head gasket job.
I started to polish the boxes, but after investing two hours into one half of the smallest door, I realized it is just not a job I want to be doing every year, so I decided to decal wrap them. The prep with is finicky, because you would be surprised what shows through the decal. With i uniform colour, even the slightest imperfection is visible, but with the right prep work the final product is awesome. Aluminum is an amazing material for these storage boxes because it is so light, but it does oxidase quickly with our harsh road chemicals here, so a decal wrap felt like the right move.
It was also important for me to get some ventilation into the boxes to help keep them dry. I have used these computer fans in other projects and they work great, with a very minimal power draw and a long lifespan. They will most likely never be turned off, but I did take the time to wire them to a switch in the passthrough.
I made the decision finally to utilize the truck alternator to charge my house battery, to help during the winter months when the power draw is higher, but solar intake is drastically reduced. It is a 20 amp DC to DC Charge Controller, which should be able to run happily all day long with the 130 amp truck alternator.
Finally, my oil purge issue... It is solved, but I will do a closer look into this in a future video. If I was to do the same job again, I think I would have kept the stock cover and just replaced the gasket.

I bet he's an incredible resource for all the maintenance, repairs and new projects on your rig. It would be fun to see you guys do a trip together! As I'm a handy guy around vehicles and such, I'm really loving all these "off season" maintenance videos.

You’ve likely found this already and perhaps know of a fellow KZbin channel but Cutterup Rob is based in Calgary, does a lot of videos regarding 12 valves and has a great explanation regarding a crankcase evacuation mod that looks pretty straight forward, ties that old style tube that vents your crankcase, into the exhaust which gives the crankcase better venting and reduces oil leaks caused by build up of pressure in the crankcase. Might be an idea to look at the vacuum pump and do a reseal on it as well. He has a great video about the rebuild on this as well and explains it excellently. You’re doing a great job and it’ll be worth it when travelling/exploring season kicks in although I think the country is in for another horrible fire season. All the best, keep up the great videos

I worked at a Dodge dealership when these 12V 2nd generation trucks were new. Our store was in the heart of the oil patch. So many of our customers had issues with keeping temp in the engine during the winter. Our solution was running a 180-195 Dodge 440 thermostat in the winter months. Works awesome. Only run it during the winter.

Mick Mick Mick Mick! XD Love seeing Mick! He is such a great comedic element to your channel! Not a middle aged guy for sure, but still enjoy the build series, Canadian Adventures and adventures everywhere else! Mick always brings a laugh though, but your commentary about all these special places you visit is my absolute favorite! I especially love that so many of the places you visit aren't exactly hitting the top 10 of places to see, even though they are very worthy. It just goes to show that not every adventure needs to be to an Instagram famous spot and that there is plenty of beauty right in a lot of peoples "backyard" often times. Sure the places that have become famous are beautiful, but a hardly known trail or random roadside spot in the middle of nowhere can be just as spectacular. Looking forward to whatever your summer plans are this year! Can't wait! :)

Always love to see the back end details of prepping your rig for your adventures. Just a thought with regard to moisture in the boxes, If it remains an issue, I would recommend potentially putting in some weather stripping/rubber around the edge of the box doors and then putting in a small desiccant. There are small ones you can find at Canadian tire for around 20 bucks.

The 24 valve used a catch can at the front of the engine that you could empty every oil change, usually wasn't even a couple ounces in it. You should be able to design a catch can system for this that empties back into the crank case instead of having to manually empty it. Looking forward to seeing what you did to fix the issue!

Nice job with the boxes! Really adds some good contrast and protects the aluminum too. I'm guessing you have your vent problem sorted out but just a note about that. On some of the aircraft engines I've worked on, we have installed oil separators into the engine breather lines to solve the type of problem you are having. One side of the oil separator vents overboard while the other allows the excess oil to drain back into the crankcase. I'm sure I can speak for all your followers in saying we can hardly wait for your next adventure out with the rig!

Without the problems, you never find solutions matey - being able to get right in there, diagnose, repair and maintain is a fantastic skill set. I'm seeing a vision of Scotty from the Starship Enterprise now, exclaiming that he's not happy as a certain hum or a vibration sounds off..But your head's been transposed onto his body in the clip! 😉 Definitely agree with the others commenting on the black wrapped panels - they are looking sweet now, and the camping stove, so good too as you'll not have to keep popping inside the truck during the summer months as it will all be right there outside - making that Dungy Crab Sea to Plate process just that bit more efficient (I'm not going to say anything about step 1 - getting them into the crab basket! 😋) Going to have to think of a few new ways to keep Mick busy 🤔🤣

Thank you for continuing to share your work. Sometimes aftermarket "upgrades" just don't work out because the development engineering hasn't actually been done to completion. @3:50, this is why I just stay OEM. I spent years and years messing with aftermarket for either improvements, or to save money. It was usually neither an improvement and always cost more later. Edit: After watching the whole video, you should really consider just going back to stock. This cover is nothing but trouble and you can't afford trouble in the middle of no where in the cold. Also, thanks for recording. I know it's a PITA to work on the thing, then to record on top of it!

We had a similar problem on a totally stock 24 valve. We actually drove it from southern Alberta to Los Angeles with an enclosed trailer and a 34 ford inside to get the upholstery done in it. It drove great for hours until we stopped in southern Montana for a break….i looked under the truck and there was a large puddle of oil on the ground that came from the breather. I went and got two 1 gallon jugs of oil and took off. Every 15-20 minutes I pulled over and some oil came out for probably 100 miles….then nothing ? We drove for 15 more hours stopping for breaks/coffee etc and not a drip or any loss of oil on the dipstick ? We unloaded the vehicle we were hauling plus the enclosed trailer at the shop for two weeks and continued to have a Holliday while we waited. So we ended up drove around a lot. Every once in a while it would dump out oil but then drive for days without a problem ? Two weeks later we loaded up and headed back to Alberta with not a drop of oil loss ! We took it to a shop and they removed the head to take a look at it …they said it had been overheated at one point and scored the cylinders so needed a full rebuild ! It only had 200.000 km on it. We bolted the head back on and traded it into the dealership so I can’t tell you exactly what it was but I am building a 12 valve now for my bus and I’m hoping you figure it out in case my new one does the same thing ! BBQ compartment looks great though if that makes you feel better ??

A lot of people dont no that if you have a vacuum leak anywhere the vacuum pump exhausts its pressure in the crank case making you think you have a totally different problem. You need to get the dual valve cover breathers there nice but kind of expensive. I got some used valve covers and welded some three quarter inch bungs in them so i can vent at the top of the engine.

Excessive pressure on a engines internals will cause oil leakage at the weakest sealing points, Too much air flow out of the engine will carry oil particles out with the air. I was listening to what you were saying thinking the whole time you probably had too much blow by in the engine. I hope this isn't the real issue. The blacked out panels look awesome and the upgrades ( out door) kitchen are sweet !
