What a nice treat and surprise! It is amazing what can be done with the old passenger carriages. It's interesting seeing the details that still exist such as the luggage racks and windows. It's sad the vandals had to damage some of them. I will say that there's something about the salt air too. That always makes me very sleepy and I would fall into a trance and nap as soon as I visited my great grandmother who lived in Marblehead. Across the pond here many trams, or trolleys we called them, became restaurants, houses, and even chicken coups. The Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunk Port, Maine has restored many of them back to running order. They have one of the oldest collections of streetcars from all over the world and they run them on their "mainline" which was a former interurban. They've got some subway equipment too they bring out on special occasions. They put up a trolley pole for power for that.

You may have seen the ex London Transport underground train at the Rockhill Trolley Museum (videos on KZbin). This is an ex District Line train converted to battery power and intended for use in a 'Pop-up Metro'' service.

@@NewCityMedia They do have a nice collection and that's a place I'd like to visit someday. They're a bit far from me - about 550 miles south. I've visited the Seashore Trolley Museum quite a number of times because they're only an hour north of me, depending upon the season. Summertime is brutal with the beach traffic, but in the spring and fall it's a quite run up I-95.

Amazing how many links there are between the Underground and the isle of Wight. Thank you again for a wonderful episode (and I hope Siddy and her man are doing well with their new born).

Loving all the Hangouts, like most I suspect I was drawn in by the Secrets of the London Underground series which I adore, but the Hangouts take it onto another level! Thanks to you all for making such wonderful content!

I went on a school camp at St Helens in about 1970 and then the carriages were still recognisable as such. Very disconcerting to be sitting on the beach and to see what looked like an actual train on the seafront, especially as the nearest functioning line was several miles away at Brading. I visited St Helens again a couple of years ago and was disappointed, though not surprised, to see them in their current state.

Fascinating, thanks for sharing 😊 Is there a record of dwelling coaches etc ? An acquaintance was going to buy another one, inland, on the island. It would be cool if they were transported back, mounted on chassis and put into service as is ...behind a steam loco, last train at night ...smoke effects ...flickering lighting. Some fun to be had there 😉

The isle of Wight Steam Railway already has many carriage bodies they've done this to, with more to come. Unfortunately the IoW is inundated with these old carriages, so it's pretty unlikely that they'll ever see passengers again, although they will be looked after, as far as is possible.

Lovely as the carriages are, a typical example of detailing back in the days

Putting the floor on the diagonal adds strength to keep the carriage frame square. For being the age they are and now on a beach front. They are in very good shape.

As much as it would be cool to see these old Metropolitan Railway carriages get restored, I would rather see the disused railways of the Isle of Wight get recommissioned. Trains carrying passengers always beats trains in museums.

@NewCityMedia Interesting. I think you should make regular IoW episodes; I mean as well as AJ Wells sign makers and the current ex District Line stock on the Island Line, there's the upcoming museum and cafe housed in an old 1938 stock ex Island Line Tube train at Holliers Park in Arreton.
@alexgrundon23463 ай бұрын
Our D-stock episodes are already on KZbin. Same for 38 stock. And the AJ Wells “how signs are made” episode is due in the coming weeks. It’s recorded and in the can. Some really cool stuff still to come!

Why shouldn’t a hard working carriage spend its twilight years at the seaside with a view of the sea. In the alternate universe of Ivor the Engine someone would build a line down into the sea so they could paddle.

Yes, the current owners have bodged them up. Many of them are now empty and won’t be rented out because they want to scrap them all and replace them with something more lucrative. We had one some years ago when our children were small.
