Like you, I never got into this area of Star Wars, and I never really cared about the lore after ROTJ. I loved KotOR and the era wherein it takes place, which is why I keep Star Wars history as it is in Legends, whereas everything after Return of the Jedi (except TLJ) can be the same as it is in Canon. After ROTJ, you can't mix Legends and Canon together, because both storylines are too different. I wouldn't mind if the sequel trilogy focused on the Second Galactic Civil War, even if Kylo Ren did rip off a lot of the story of Jacen Solo. It could have been amazing, and now, thanks to the failures of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, it never will be.

When I was young I didn't like Canderous because I thought he was kind of a dick. As an adult I appreciate his character a lot more, a jaded survivor of the more messed up elements of star wars culture. The Yuuzhan Vong are honestly the coolest and most unique threat added to Star Wars. It gave us something completely new for a threat rather then the usual Sith and Empire threat. The Vong were truley a scary threat that made us uneasy about everything and made us scared for our favorite characters as no one was safe. Like Chewbaccas death was extremely sad.

The EU was never perfect but damn it had sooo much lore and great characters and amazing stories/ideas. Tossing 37 years of content was the biggest mistake Disney ever made. The EU is the only Star Wars I acknowledge. Especially old republic and legacy content.

Honestly, I found the Vong rather naff myself. And I certainly didn't find them creative or original. 🤷‍♂️ Infact I found the NJO a rather transparent attempt by the EU to try and go angsty gritty grimdark for the sake of angsty gritty grimdark. It certainly killed my interest in the post RotJ era after forcing my way through half a dozen or so of the books.

Possible explanations for why the Yuuzhan Vong didn't act on the information of that particular scout ship. 1) The scout ship didn't make it back home in time. When Canderous encountered it, it was probably already in bad shape and only attacked as a desperate measure or as a distraction to make its getaway. When it disappeared into the void, it perished before being able to contact other Yuuzhan Vong. Simple, but effective explanation. 2) The Yuuzhan Vong were busy dealing with something else that took precedence at the time. They may have been dealing with infighting, a civil war among themselves or something else that was threatening to cripple their civilization and they simply didn't have the time or resources required to act on this information until they restabilized. 3) They weren't on their voyage through the void yet. They still resided in their own galaxy and had plenty shit left to handle there, that they neither wanted nor needed to bother with other galaxies just yet. 4)And last, the information it gathered was insufficient to make any conclusive decisions. If the scout ship was indeed severely damaged, its priority would have been to rebuild itself before it started gathering information. It just didn't have enough time to collect any information. It was stuck on the outer rim of the known Star Wars galaxy, after all. Not much it can learn about its inhabitants from all the way out there. Alternatively, whatever date it did collect was lost to time or data corruption, either during Canderous' attack or while it was making its escape.

I absolutely LOVE how this obscure reference to the Vong by Canderous gives so much added depth to their people. Like, they had scout ships scoping out the galaxy for literally THOUSANDS of years. It implies how much planning and reconnaissance must’ve went into their invasion, and helps explain how their invasion was so successful when they started. It also implies that they likely were scoping out several galaxies to determine which one was most ripe for invasion.

Who knows, they probably had an entire espionage system in the core worlds by clone wars's era to sabotage and obtain more information about the political system, star systems, creatures, technological and weaponry development of the galaxy.

The ship they found was already floating derelict in debris in an asteroid belt, and the fact that they fled instead of fighting kind of implies the ship was already in bad shape so its not crazy to say that the ship didn't make it back to their fleet. We also don't know the exact dates of things and the Yuuzhan Vong could have not had left their galaxy yet. The war and aftermath that left them looking for a new galaxy could have been going on at the same time as TOR era or even after it.

Theres a story about how their leader ar the time sat them outside the galaxy dor a while debating on entering. I'm not sure for how long but what I do know is that he was murdered and usurped by a new leader and thats what started the invasion.

I've gotten this dialogue in pretty much every Kotor run I've had, it's one of the most memorable Canderous moments for me. That being said I am shocked it was a Yuuzhan Vong reference, I thought it was part of the games build up in regards to ancient races and beings and the series plan to eventually lead us into the unknown regions.

It was originally intended to foreshadow intelligent life outside of the main galaxy that we would have met/allied with/fought against in kotor 3, but unfortunately there are a lot of plotlines that just never got finished when the game got cancelled.

I never read the Expanded Universe novels, but I did read the generic timeline of events of the SWU outside the films. After reading the synopsis of the Yuuzhan Vong-Republic War, and then hearing this dialog, I knew that this could only be a reference to the YV. It is written very well in my opinion; both subtle and obvious at the same time.

I remember I first played KOTOR back in 2005 when I was 15, right after I’d finished the New Jedi Order saga. When this conversation with Canderous came up, I thought no way, did they actually reference the Yuuzhan Vong?!!! Obviously, this was before KOTOR videos on KZbin were a thing:) so when I replayed it a few months later, I paid particular attention to this bit. A part of me really wished there was some version of the games in which either Zaalbar or Hanharr gets killed by a moon :)

I went from playing KOTOR 1&2 to reading 90 some Star Wars novels. I understand ALOT of the new Jedi era/Vong war hate. But it opened the door for a ton of new line of stories in the EU. Had they planned a 5-8 book run (instead of 19-22), it could have been so much better. Stover’s Traitor is one of the absolute best Star Wars stories

I think the scout ships were faster than the worldships which is why one made it earlier than the rest of the fleet. As for the Vong's oldest ship being 1000 years old, I imagine they went through several generations during their long journey.

i think this implies that the Vong were sending out scoutships across many galaxies. in the same way the empire was sending out probe dorids to planets. when the scout was "attacked" it knew that this was a viable cannidate, and went of to find the main fleet, perhaps they tried another galaxy or 2 first that was closer, or something like that even, to help fit the 4000 year time gap

When the original KOTOR released, I had worked at a bookstore in the local mall for about two years, and had left there a year or so before KOTOR released... But during my time working there, I got completely drawn into the Vong storylines and had read every single book in the series. And Canderous was one of my favorite characters so I was constantly talking to him to learn more about him. I thought it was really cool that they threw in that little bit of reference to the Vong storyline. Star Wars was, at the time in the early to mid 2000s, working really hard to take all the scattered stories and lore and find neat ways to tie it all together, and I really enjoyed that era of Star Wars. My opinion of Disney's time at the helm is very much a mixed bag but that's a different story entirely. Either way, I knew what Canderous was referring to instantly and thought it was really cool that such a reference was put in the game.

I already knew about this. As for the continuity error, we know that Quoreal knew about the SW galaxy, but chose not to go there, presumably after conferring with the gods. Shimrra killed him and chose to invade. Perhaps even 4000 years prior, the Supreme Overlord of the time learned of the galaxy, but the gods said to avoid it.

I have not consumed much Star Wars media outside of the movies and most of the games. I live in Africa, and I have only ever seen 2 Star Wars comic books, both from a store in out capital, and both outdated by the time of sale.

When I was playing recently, I had this dialogue option finally, and I noticed that once Canderous started describing the asteroid after hitting it, all music stopped for the remainder of his story. It makes perfect sense! There’s no telling where the main fleet was. So we don’t know how long it took the scout ship to find the fleet, get to them, and then for the fleet to travel to the Star Wars galaxy. They probably sent scout ships to every galaxy nearby that they thought they could reach and then waited for news. If one of the scouts was lost or damaged they would have now way of knowing what happened to it so they probably sent waves of scouts at different points in time until they got a favorable report. And that particular scout might not have even reached them at all. There’s many dangerous things that live around the edge of and outside the galaxy!

Well, the distances are very long and they might have been collecting information on where to head for thousands of years... Even if this happened 4000 years prior, they could have had similar ships on similar missions in other galaxies and wondered where would be the most suitable systems for them to live on... And this unprovoked aggression might not look too good on the scouting report from the ship either. If you have to rebase your entire species, you really don't want to move into a neighborhood where people shoot first and ask questions later. On the lore front, I'm pretty much in the same boat. I have heard of the Vong, but haven't really read about them all that much. So don't quote me if I'm all wrong and please correct me with the right data. I'm willing to learn...

Since you asked yes I did know about this conversation during my first play through. And it's link to the yuzan vong. I found it by being the compleshinist sort that I am. I exhausted everyone's dialog by the end of the game. And candorous was one of my primary companions through that play through. I remember this little tidbit specifically cause after hearing it I asked myself "wait was that just a yuzan vong reference!" And immediately started looking up stuff on the vong to compare it to.

There were a couple ancient Vong ships already in the galaxy at the time of the NJO. They had fled from the Vong Galaxy thousands of years before. One of them was a sentient world ship that allied with the Jedi and gave them weapons and ships able to stand up to the Vong. The Vong survivors actually settled on that sentient world after the Vong war. My memory may be a little fuzzy it's been many many years since I read the NJO.

In my opinion, an advance Yuuzhan Vong exploratory force would have been the so called "True Sith" threat hyped up in the entire trilogy, and the fact that they're deemed as such is because that they're a new threat that do feel and act similar as the Sith of old (not to mention their uncharacteristic Force immunity). Thankfully, said exploratory force was easily defeated by the likes of Revan, the Exile, and maybe other allies like the Chiss offscreen. A pity BioWare had to be a bit too clutchy on loving the idea of generic villains like bloody Tenebrae.

Given that their oldest world ship was 1000 years old it would have taken the scout ship 1000 to return to the Vong space, this reduces the time shift from 4000 to 3000 years, then during the next 2000 years something happened that made them have to leave, now the knowledge of the scout ship is relevant and they send the ship on its way, something that takes another 1000 years to cross The Void.

I remember coming across this dialouge while playing Kotor as a teenager and it immediately caught my interest but I never heard or read any explanation on this story. I used to assume it was something to do with the Empire from SWTOR but if it was going beyond the edge of the star wars galaxy then it wouldn't make any sense. I have a feeling that if it was Yuuzhan Vong then they may have been preemptively sending out scout ships to different galaxies for anything that might happen in the future. I don't know much about legend events after Return of the Jedi either but depending on how long it took the scout ship to get to the Star Wars galaxy and then back to the Vong galaxy, it't not entirely far fetched that it took them so long to get to the Star Wars galaxy. I don't know how long the travel through the void would have been. Anyone have thoughts or information on this?

I always found this story of Canderous to be most interesting and i never figured out what it was. Now, after 15 years i know it was Yuzhan Vong a thing i never suspected because it always felt like theres too large gap in time for it to happen.

Found it boring, but the moment I saw Canderous, I was intrigued. I don't know, there is something about Mandalore the Preserver, that grabs my attention, LOL. Leader of the space Samurai is always engaging. He's such an honorable space warmonger.

As i understand, the yuuzhang vong arrived at our known gakaxumy 15000 years BBY. But i dont really knlw how that makes sense, maybe the didnt had hyperspace or they just were waiting other yuuzhang vong ships to come

My theory is the scout took 2,000 years to reach the rest of the vong and the vong took 2,000 years to reach the star wars galaxy. Should note the vong invasion wasn't instant, they patrolled and studied the galaxy before they struck.

I knew of the reference when I first got to that conversation back in 2004. I never read the series but friends of mine would fill me in on the lore so I could remain caught up with the EU.

I knew about it the first time I played through. I thought it was a pretty cool little Easter Egg. But to answer your question. It's possible the scout ship never made it back to the main fleet. Or second option is they did act on it by watching the galaxy more closely and acted on it when they felt the timing was right. And third option is that the Yuuzahn Vong sent scout ships out when they knew their own galaxy was dying to find a new galaxy to call home. And when the scout ship returned with the news of a habitable galaxy, the Vong left theirs 3000 years later when their galaxy finally died and it took them another 1000 years to arrive. You are also forgetting that the Vong were around during the time of The Phantom Menace.. So it's possible they had more scouts hidden throughout the history of the Republic

as for why they did not act a small scout ship could and would be able to move faster than an entire fleet of massive world ships those would take time and depending on the way the entire race was going they may of had to change direction to move on the scouts info and they may of needed to ensure they had the proper items to and resources to both get there and also wage war yrs of travel in a void would of cost a lot of resources and other things

And for those who have read the Rogue Planet novel, let's not forget that it mentioned about the Yuuzhan Vong discovered the planet Zonama Sekot. Later on, Obi-Wan and Anakin (padawan) were sent to investigate Vergere's disappearance and discovered that an unknown biotech-based alien species (the far outsiders) attacked the Sekotans to learn their secrets on advanced ship building (living ships). It's such a missed opportunity for not using the Vongs as the antagonist for sequel movies, and looking at the galaxy map that Zonama Sekot are a neighborhood to Rakata Prime. I know most people at the time aren't a fan of the Yuuzhan Vong, or as they like to call them the "Borg" of Star Wars. However, we can all agree that they are more threatening than the ridiculous First Order and Sith Eternal.

The void is huge probably took the scout 2000 years to get to the Vong fleet and another to go back also the Vong knew of the galaxy during the Clone wars and Imperial Empire era and didn't attack during that time Darth Maul even fights one

The reason they didn't act on it is because they didn't need to. When that scout ship was sent their galaxy was still viable. They had to have had previous knowledge of the SW galaxy's location and viability before they set off, otherwise how could they have known to set off in that direction amidst the endless void of space?

Ahh very cool, I had no idea about this; but then I’ve never really spent much time developing Canderous’ storyline. I see no issue with the Vong 4K before we next meet them, for all we know the Vong were quite happy in whatever galaxy they were currently in at the time and didn’t feel the need to move. More over, as you say, the world ships were only at most a thousand years old; it’s strikes me that the Vong likely started scouting long before they were capable of picking up their entire race/group and migrating. Why wait if you can send scouts out sooner?

I woud agree, but when it comes to the lore, they are said to leave their own galaxy and travel for a few thousand years (the term "millenia" is explicitly used on Wookiepedia)... They ruined their own galaxy around 15000 BBY, and even if it took some time before they left, I bet it was far before KOTOR took place... When it comes to worldship age, Baanu Miir at its millenium of existence was one of the oldest worldships left, but what says they couldn't have had the capability to grow new worldships during their journey, a capability lost in the infighting that nearly doomed their whole exodus between galaxies?
