In the high alpine, things can come apart quickly. Climbers accustomed to situations with serious consequences rely on systems that are precise and personal. Brought to life by a deep team of athletes, field testers, designers, technicians and production specialists, the High Alpine Kit is a meticulously integrated layering system, from base layer to belay parka. Each piece functions beautifully on its own, but works by design with every other piece in the kit to form an efficient, thoughtful whole. From shell fabric to insulation, hoods to cuffs, zipper pulls to pockets - every detail of the High Alpine Kit was scrutinized and tweaked to perfection with a single goal in mind: moving efficiently through the earth’s least forgiving environments. I would like to see a similar kit for hiking etc. Things like the 1/2 bag etc could easily be adapted.

I have many pieces from the Patagonia "High alpine Kit", but, I have researched and created my own from many different companies. I love my Ascensionist packs and I love the hybrid sleeping bag, I have put together so many pieces from Mammut, MHW, Patagonia, BD, Petzl, Arcteryx, LA Sportiva, and so many other companies to create what I think is the best climbing gear for me. I don't really like being a fan boy without questioning the price and overall bang for the buck.

Bart can I tell you about some Nordic skiing innovation? I am wondering as a person hat loves innovation what you think of it and what you think Patagonia would think of it. Thanks.

Steve House cares about Nordic skiing. Patagonia Training For The New Alpinism: A Manual for the Climber as Athlete Book. At least there are two of us. You are thoughtful to have mentioned this to me. Thank you.

I cut and climb trees and have a bad back. Probably a bit too old and too poor for a complete career change.

How do you even get into alpine climbing without knowing the right people?

Take a class, hire a guide. The American Alpine Guide Association (AMGA), American Alpine Club (AAC) and American Alpine Institute (AAI) all have resources for beginners, or organizations like the Sierra Club and Mazamas in Portand. Retailers like REI and Easter Mountain Sports will also do stuff. Start with just some rock climbing and backpacking in the mountains and gradually grow the skills for mountaineering. And once you've started, put yourself out there, let people know you want to climb and learn more, talk with folks you run into who are climbers. Ask lots of questions, take advice graciously and make it clear you care about safety and people will be happy to mentor you. What area of the country are you from?

Thank you for all the advice. I live in Michigan which is not ideal for training to do alpine climbing. However, the highest I've been was 14.3k ft and that was a slight struggle.

Join a local climbing gym every city in USA has at least one. There are 350 of them in USA. There you will find all manner of people that climb and train. Consider also using one of the following or all of them to cross train. Nordic Skiing on snow and on roller skis. SpikeBoarding and Flat Water Stand Up Paddling in summer. All three of these will get you crazy fit for climbing and mountaineering.

I lived in Ohio for a few years when I first started alpine stuff. I met like minded partners in the climbing gym and augmented my skills through rock climbing on my own and paid guided courses/trips. Then, I moved to California and my progression really took off after I was able to get out there at least 2x a month and found a skilled partner. So.... either spend a lot of money in traveling and guides or move to the west. :) Ps. I own a bunch of Patagonia stuff. It's all great.
