Sean Clifford went to my High School. He was named the starter his sophomore year, first time that had ever happened in the history of our program. He had a great year and catapulted to the top rankings. His Junior year he was expected to be even better, he played comparatively poorly however. His senior year seemed to be even worse, he battled injury and threw a lot of picks, by the end of the year we squeaked into the playoffs at 5-5. There was a backup who played very well in Sean’s absence (that was Chase Wolf who is now at Wisconsin) and lots of people were talking about replacing Sean, but our coach stuck with Clifford. We were favored to lose every game we played in the playoffs, but we kept winning. Clifford was immaculate all throughout the playoffs, and eventually we became the first school in history to win a D1 State Championship after a 5-5 season. Moral of the story, never in a million years can you count out Sean Clifford.

Let's be honest and fair. Yes Clifford is just average, but the Oline was absolutely horrible and in most situations couldn't protect him for more than 2-3 seconds. Combine that with Yurcich's long developing routes and so D coordinators knew they could get a lot of pressure with rushing only FOUR and the rest would drop back into pass coverage. To make matters even worse for Clifford is there was absolutely no run game at all to help take the pressure off of him . So very bad Oline kept the offense one dimensional and so it was a very easy day defensive coordinators to play against Penn State. So he got no help with the routes, no help from the Oline and no help from the run game. There's not many QBs out there that could have thrived in that horrible situation.

In the big 10 east, you can lose a game and be fine as long as that game isn’t against Ohio St. Beat them, win the B10 championship and you got yourself a chance to win the National Championship. But year in and year out we lose whether by a single point or a possession. Common misconception is they blow us out but that’s not true. Most of these games the past few years have been by a score. Michigan doesn’t really beat any high ranked teams and Mich St has only recently rebounded. The team needs more consistent QB play and a running game. Our defense is usually very solid and can compete. The o line could use some help. Our LT Walker was quite disappointing and with McSorley, there’s leeway since he’s a far better runner than any of the QBs mentioned in this video. We recruit well with receivers and TEs. Our offensive issues are in the middle.

So many people are down on Franklin, but there's so much more to this than a head coach. Penn state has been on some very unfortunate circumstances in the last many years. Some significant players have either ended their time in state college short or retired from football altogether. Everyone complains about the oline, but remember Nana asiedu who was a big time recruit at OT had to retire due to health problems, and same with journey brown. Those two coupled with micah parsons opting out and injuries to clifford, isaac, mustipher, etc has really hurt them. I'd say there's a problem in player development as players such as shorter, Ford, and slade who were supposed to anchor the offense for years just never reached their ceiling, but then you have players who were three stars and low four stars who became big time players ie mcsorley, dotson, journey brown, etc. The one coaching spot I've seen who has legitimate problems is the oline coach, but now we have trautwine and he's only had a year so the jury is still out. The bad luck also covers coaches as until now we haven't had the same offensive coordinator in consecutive years since Moorhead. Sean Spencer of the dline left, our oline coach has been replaced and these are important coaching positions. When we blame Franklin, remember where he got us when we had a consistent coaching staff. 3, 11 win seasons, a big ten championship, and two new years six wins. Now, besides Brent pry being replaced by Manny Diaz (who I think is going to do great things for us) we finally have some consistency in players and coaches per year. This has already benefitted big time in this year's recruiting class and a very achievable top 5 class in next year. Good things will come.

Clifford I feel like will benefit if the O-Line improves and gets healthy, but unlike the last few years he has steep competition at QB. And if he struggles it will be similar to the McCarthy vs McNamara situation at Michigan. Luckily they have a Top RB recruit, Washington and Lambert Smith are back, Strange is set for a breakout year. They have another outstanding freshman coming at receiver. And if the offense struggles, their defense will still be good even if key players are gone because of the tradition of Linebacker U, and now they have Manny Diaz as DC and that will be massive spark to the team. Don't be shocked if they can hang with the big boys. We saw it last year even if they lost close games to Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State. Will we see it again. I hope so.

Michigan I think they can beat them despite the game being at the Big House thanks to the Wolves losing most of their D plus Macdonald to the Ravens. MSU and Ohio State thank god both games are at Beaver Stadium. Penn State if they can fix the O-Line and Clifford doesn't fall off, this team can win the BIG10. Franklin once said, that opportunity is knocking, Michigan opened the door last year and we now have to take advantage of it this year. WE ARE!

@@michaelhession2105 LOL Franklin said opportunity is knocking in 2016. This ain't that lucky year no more. Welcome to the world of real Franklin football. They'll lose 5 or 6 games next year.

I knew he was a bust. I also read through the grapevine that Singleton isn't that great either because of the high school competition he played against

@@bobbydenezza7795 he only has good stats bc medina has no rb, and the go five wide every game against shitty teams

@@beanman4498 Not surprised like I said. He could be another Morrelli, or Hackensack, or Clifford. Any Penn st qb that wears number 14 are all busts. Hope he wears 12. It's a better number for a qb

I’m not gonna lie but Clifford took a downfall after the 5-0 record

No QB has any shot at success behind the garbage offensive line they trot out there every week

It’s been enough of Clifford for 5 seasons I think it will be a battle bet Villeux and Allar but ultimately Allar wins the job
