Coming from a new hire graduate ($125,000 salary): To those applying in the software developer/engineering roles, one piece of advice I highly recommend is having people skills. Being able to effectively communicate is such an important skill set that not many people realize, especially in a field where basically everybody is an introvert and socially awkward. I know only the CS basics, graduated with a 3.3 BS, and I managed to land an intern position at Amazon and then a full time ride. On the outside it may seem like I’m “one of the smart ones” but I promise I was just the average student wanting to leave class early and procrastinate on projects. That being said, I was able to effectively communicate and speak well with my interviewer and manager, even for questions I didn’t know how to answer. They ended the interview saying I was very well spoken and am likely to hear back soon. Working customer service at Best Buy and other restaurants for ~4 years definitely helped. Just wanted to give my two cents for anyone out there who feels like they might not be one of the “smart ones”, I promise yall it definitely is possible.

I'm a math major and I'm going to graduate at 27. My situation in life is far different than most average people. I graduated High School with big dreams at 16, my family is poor. ...wasn't long until my dreams faded away though.... I wanted to be an airline pilot, but I had no money and there are no scholarships for such a trade. I looked. RIP. I don't want to be a pilot anymore though, that dream is dead. My first job was at Wendy's, then I worked as a receptionist at a car dealership until I was 19. After that, I enrolled to studying Physics With math and attended college for 2 years straight, then I took two years off because my dad, and thus my entire family got evicted from our last apartment living together in 2016, and I was forced into supporting myself (through selling myself-- EXTREME pain wouldn't suggest it, rating: 0/10 lol, ***please know my only other option was homelessness, probably being raped on the street and death***) and living alone. In 2017, I went through this massive ordeal where many explicit and naked videos of me were released, edited and mocked online by thousands of random people who I didn't even know....and I got arrested for macing a psychopathic prick, (I'm still not sorry, fuck that bitch) so I took another year off of school to deal with that and continued to sell myself online to pay my bills. I went back to school in 2019. I only changed my major because the students in my university don't like Physics so they abolished the entire program....(I had a full scholarship from our local school, of course other than classes that I had to repeat because they were so hard and poorly prepared for, had to pay for those out of the money I made selling myself...I guess it's still better than having student debt...) Now, next semester I'm doing my last 3 main math courses and I'll be 27 years old in August, however in December, 2021 I'll finally have my Bachelor's in Mathematics between my hands. So far, I've had 4 cars, and lived on my own for 4 years, which for someone like me who lives in this country is a relatively big accomplishment. (Which by some people's standards is sad-- keep in mind I'd be homeless and dead if I didn't do what I had to do) I had to fight really hard for every single last dollar and cent I've ever made in my life. For every last concept and idea that I had to install in my mind. In the end, I have no regrets, I did what I had to do to survive. I'm about to make it out, and thanks to COVID-19, I'm finally free from selling my body. (And no, I didn't catch any STD's.) No, of course I can't put that on my resume!! Lol but I can find other things I can put. Anyway, I don't know if I'm posting this and someone who is in the same situation I was in will see this, but I just want to encourage anyone who is going through a hard time right now. I urge you, don't let anything hold you back in this life from accomplishing what you want! ❤️ Don't let temporary pain force you to forfeit your potential... (Today = Pain) => (Tomorrow = Pleasure) xox

Software Engineer was basically an overarching job title for some of the other jobs mentioned: Java Developer and Software Developer. Not too far off was Data Base Administrator, and Data Scientist. The theme here, get a job in technology!
@VKGZ134 жыл бұрын
I attempted a CS associates degree and dropped out once I got to data structures. I had a 3.9 gpa but my teacher was some Asian guy who barely spoke English and was terrible at teaching. I already have a bachelors degree in business and have experience, but I wanted to try software out. The teachers ultimately ruined my desire to pursue software. I can still finish the degree, I have 3 classes left to take. I may do it later on. The issue with all these fancy jobs is that you need to come from a top school to even be considered for these jobs. I’ve been applying to over 50 jobs these past 2 months and I’ve had 1 phone interview, an interview for Amazon, and under consideration at another company. The top companies don’t even send you an email saying sorry we aren’t proceeding with you. They just ignore your application and you never hear back from them.
@levibeam1004 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to finish your software engineering degree to work at these FAANG companies. You have a bachelors degree already for the requirement. Yes, going to Harvard and getting a 4.0 will help you get an interview, but that’s it. It’ll help you get one. Once you get to the actual interview none of that shit matters. FAANG companies such as Amazon’s interviews are difficult. People spend 8 hours a day for 3 months just doing leet code stuff. Which is ALL Data structures and Algorithms. If you don’t know that stuff, you have absolutely no chance at working for a place like Amazon. Data structures and Algorithms are really the only thing those companies test you on. So people literally just do Leet code for hours upon hours before the interview. Not only that, a place like Amazon has their 12 words they believe in. And it’s out there for everyone to see. So you’re first interviews, you have to tie in those 12 mission words to ace the interview. It’s just a game. It’s an awful game. It’s a difficult game. But don’t give your hopes up. There are several people I know working for Amazon that got hired right out of college. And none of them went to ivy leagues or top schools. Why? Because they knew their shit. They had a great portfolio of coding projects, a decently good GPA, along other things that got them the interview. But once it came interview time, none of that shit mattered. It was just solving Leet code problems and being a likable human being. If you can go to leet code and solve a medium difficulty problem in under 20 minutes pretty consistently, you’re 80% there. You just have to do things like updating your portfolio to help you get the interview in the first place. Don’t give up :) if that’s you’re goal, work hard, learn your shit, be a decent likable human being in the interview. It’s not impossible.
@VKGZ134 жыл бұрын
@@levibeam100 the opportunity cost of me continuing the CS journey isn’t worth it. I’ve decided to stay in the Business field. I actually got accepted for a position at Amazon as a manger. Don’t earn software engineer money yet, but in a few years I’ll get there. Never really been a tech guy tbh, I’m a business person. I just though software would’ve been a more fun career but I’m losing time, so I can’t keep wasting time trying to figure out what I want to do. I’m turning 24 next month and my peers have already been working real jobs for a year now. I’m behind and “too old” for the software world. I would have to spend another 3 years to really know how to code and create software. It’s just not worth the time and effort tbh. There’s other careers that make just as much money. My ideal job placement would’ve been in investment banking, but again the lack of not going to a top school really lowers your chances. I don’t know anyone in investment banking who can even get me an interview. I know I can do really well at it once given the proper training, but nobody’s willing to give me chance. So I’ll just figure investing out on my own. Everything you could possibly want to learn is online and free. I have my real estate license too. I’m just gonna grind it out for the next few years and see where I can get.

Honestly the best “fire” strategy is just simply doing 20 years in the military. Join at 17-18 and retire at 37-38. On the other hand You can be a software developer, make a lot of money and “retire” early but at the end of the day they can lose it all over night off of one bad decision, not to mention other expenses such as medical/dental insurance/life insurance etc… with that being said at-least with a military pension you can stoop to the lowest level in your life and never hit rock bottom because you’ll always have a guaranteed check coming in as well as all medical care for life. I only say this from seeing some of my dads wealthy friends fall off the financial deep end while he was able to start enjoying his life much earlier with less stress. He had the luxury to get jobs and quit if he didn’t like the work environment. Money isn’t everything but security definitely is.

Software Engineer here. A couple points: 1. It's redundant and unhelpful to differentiate between Software Engineer, Software Developer, Computer Programmer, Java Developer etc. My co-workers and I interchangeably use these terms when describing what we do even though our job titles say Software Engineer. There are certainly different levels of Software Engineer (eg. Junior, Mid, Senior, Staff, Principal, Distinguished), but regardless of the level, we're all fundamentally Software Engineers just under various monikers. The list had redundant entries. 2. Your description of the Software Engineer role actually describes the Software Architect role which is most certainly not an entry level position.

That's actually why I'm thinking of moving from CS to a different Major mainly because the instability of the CS industry and always having to constantly keeping up. I'm good at it and can do the work, but I never really enjoyed learning some of the material. I figured picking a more stable job is where I want to be and do something that I can enjoy and do.
@djgulston Жыл бұрын
Exactly my sentiments. I actually have a BSc in Computer Science and Statistics. I also did a coding bootcamp. I consider myself quite good at programming. I completed a 3-month DevOps internship. I've built several projects as well. Despite this, I've been struggling to get a job. All of that was hard work, and I'm not keen on learning new languages and frameworks in the ever-changing field of technology just to get my foot in the door and/or stay relevant. I want something more stable. I've actually applied to university again to study accounting in 2024. I'm planning on becoming a chartered accountant instead. The nice thing about it is that 80% to 90% of what I learn will be used in the workplace. Computer science, on the other hand, doesn't properly teach you what you need to know in the workplace. In fact, a lot of the stuff you learn is very outdated.

There is no chance that CS grinding courseload, projects, and the over saturated job market is better than Finance where it’s easier to get a job and Business degrees literally teach you the language for starting your own Small Business or Large Business one day which is the best career on Earth

How are you ranking these? Average total compensation across all positions based on some given salary data website? This gets really fuzzy since a lot of these positions overlap and different companies call them different things. The list isn't really accurate. If we're speaking of highest paying available entry level jobs, I would guess the list to look more like the below (total compensation ranges are a rough estimate of 75th percentile -> 99th percentile in a major city): 1. Quantitative software engineer (this is a high frequency trading firm position) [200k-400k] 2. Private equity analyst [150k-250k] 3. Software engineer (this will include Software Reliability Engineer, Software Developer, Mobile Developer, etc. etc.) [125k-225k] 4. Investment banking analyst [100k-200k] 5. Data scientist [100k-200k] 6. Product Manager [80k-175k] 7. UX designer [75k-150k] Chemical and petroleum engineers are also somewhere in there (probably the #4-#6 range).

@@AW-yc2tc there's so many things.. I don't think a youtube comment could suffice but here's some main things.. you have to be brutally honest with yourself about what you really want in life (stationary life with house, spouse, kids, or none of those but instead have solitude and free-time. Just realize both have their risks and rewards), what you are actually capable of (take some personality tests and begin to really study yourself so you know what subjects fit with how you're wired), and the odds that you'll find success in a field (research salary range, present and future hiring statistics, companies that hire that position, etc). Also, I think you have to consider your inner child to some extent that way you can have pleasure in your work life and not get burnt out. Example, if as a child you thought being out in nature was the greatest thing ever then you should look into the life sciences like becoming a hydrologist, forest ranger, soil scientist, marine biologist etc. and line up your school career to reach that end goal. The younger you can do these things the better off you'll be in the future.. Something that helps this process is to get older and wiser mentors in your life which really should be your parents but if they aren't even adept at navigating the modern world themselves then you're gonna have to find guidance elsewhere like high school/college advisors, pastors, life coaches, and some good advice youtube channels like this one. Basically, what I've outlined here is saying you have to figure out who you are and an end goal that mixes well with who you are, then develop a plan to reach it. Force yourself into some self discovery, long term thinking and planning and you'll be in the top percentage of people cause unfortunately most of us don't really practice these things.

Software engineers and software developers are the same thing. They both design and they both write code. And quant trading positions pay the best, there are few data science entry level jobs actually, generally they require PhD/prior experience. Truck driving *can* let you gross $70,000 to well into six figures, but it depends on several factors: who you drive for, what you haul, whether you're a company driver or owner-operator, an owner-operator's expenses, and how much freight you move a month. Drivers can work up to 70 hours a week depending on what exactly they do, though I know of a guy who bought his own truck, ran around Ohio and the Northeast, grossed $90k, and had weekends off, all with just a box trailer (known as a 'dry van'). Big money is usually in over-the-road driving and specialized freight, but some regional (read: operating in a few states) and local jobs pay well. However, local guys usually use *all* of their legal driving time every single day, whereas OtR is a lot more laid back. You also have to be healthy to keep a Department of Transportation medical certificate, which you can't drive without, and some jobs require you to unload your own truck.

Do you feel that truck driving has a negative impact on social life?
@theironworks67974 жыл бұрын
@@maryclaireyabut9010 Absolutely. My answer will be a little in depth in case someone new to the industry reads this. Usually, this isn't a job for someone who needs to be around people, or someone with a family. Drivers who do over-the-road driving might be home for a few days every month or every few months, and even the local guys have no time for anyone. A lot of people get divorced because they're away from home so much, and most drivers have no sleep schedule. One day, you might run at 6 AM, the next you might head out at 9 PM. Commercial drivers also can't drink at all if they want to keep their job. There's any number of variables that can and will keep you isolated, from breakdowns to a warehouse taking way too long to load a trailer.
