It’s so sad that teachers are so under appreciated in this country. Their jobs are incredibly important, they help spawn the future generation. Some students might get mad of why teachers hate their lives and jobs but I honestly can’t blame them. Education is so important; this government should really reform it. But I suppose it’s like this because the elite don’t want free thinkers, just worker drones.

@K C the idea I envision is that it becomes a respected profession, and a master’s degree may help with that
@TumblinWeeds4 жыл бұрын
@K C well no actually. If teachers were in demand they wouldn’t be getting such low salaries. This is basic supply and demand. Sure, we’ll always need more good teachers, but as long as schools can find someone willing to take 30k for an overtime teaching job they won’t pay more.
@TumblinWeeds4 жыл бұрын
@K C when people say demand it is usually in relation to supply. If demand is high but supply is even higher, that doesn’t count-the world does not desperately need more teachers and thus they are treated poorly. Nurses on the other hand, demand exceeds supply by a large margin. That’s why they are compensated much better than teachers, and the field is projected to grow quickly.

Whilst Psychology gets roasted a lot in these types of videos, I do agree on the lack of job opportunities after. It was even emphasised during our degree orientation. I mostly went ahead with it because I intend to go into clinical psychology (which requires a PhD). My advice is, if you want to go into any of the degrees he mentioned here, it's best to be intentional and have a laid out plan as you're going through uni: volunteer in places you might wanna work at, join clubs, connect with profs and people in the field, or join a co-op program. Basically build experience as you go through uni so you come out not only with a degree. Also let yourself explore your degree in the first year or two so you can switch out when things aren't working out for you.

What kind of professors do you have to not emphasize on two major points: one you wont be a psychologist after getting a BA/BS and two there are a lot of flexible job opportunities such as Research assistant, RBT, mental health technician, camp counselor, case worker, sales rep, etc. It's important to tell high schoolers and undergrads that they wont be PRACTICING psychology with just a BA/BS but that there are still plenty of job opportunities instead of discouraging them to enter the field because "they won't be able to find a job".
@ashleyoverthinkslots4 жыл бұрын
I can't agree more, i think people should take time to explore in their first year in college and figure out what they want to do. If you want to get a high paying job right after college, then of course you should get a "practical degree". For me, I always knew I'm going to grad school and be in academia, so I majored in neuroscience in undergrad and now am in a phd program and i don't regret it at all. So i think it's important to think about what career you want to pursue and really do the research, not just choose a major because it sounds cool.

The major you choose is not always the problem, the issue is thinking your major directly leads to a job, when post-graduate employment usually comes from internships, letters of recommendation from professors, and alumni networks. Even for technical majors like CS and engineering, a degree is not enough on its own since everyone applying to those positions also has the same degreee, and employers want candidates with experience outside of classes.

I did my undergraduate degree in Japanese with a minor in math. Completely useless. The elephant in the room that no one talks about is that most people who major in a foreign language can’t actually speak, read or write in it. I did psych and went to a humanities based school, and I agree my degree (alone) was useless. If you do social sciences or the humanities, you need to be supplementing your degree with *marketable* skills. I did my degree in psych, but I went to a bilingual university (we have these in Canada) and did half my course work in French. I also worked for my department doing admin assist jobs etc. I took leadership roles for different clubs and volunteered for a shit loads of events and got to network with different peoplee. I now work in government doing personnel selection, and I get to use aspects from my psych degree as part of my work. But in no way at all would I have landed my job with *just* my degree. I reckon the area of study was the least important factor when they decided to hire me. Universities take alumni like me and paint a picture that a humanities degree is your ticket to these sort of decent jobs. Its not. The degree was necessary, but in all honesty, the only reason I got my job is because I hustled my ass doing side projects outside of my degree. Most freshmen entering uni arent going to do that, and theyre disillusioned that theyll have a successful future so long as they complete their studies.

That's true for success in all humanities! Unless you're passionate and devoted to all aspects of the major, you likely won't succeed within that field. Most people don't care about the intricacies of their given subjects, just the superficial intro level stuff. Thing is, only some Stem/business majors can get away with being apathetically interested in their degree. Most companies don't care if you hate your self/field of interest, it's simply, "Do you have a CS/Account/etc. degree? Cool, get behind that computer and make us money. here's 60-80k" Your passion is irrelevant. My gf and I majored in psych and history respectively for undergrad and have both good positions doing what we love, make decent money (though of course not as much as a good corporate job), and have clear paths ahead to progress. But we were both exceptional. We both wanted to get jobs in our fields since we were children and tailored our lives and goals around doing so. Most people just "Wanna learn how peoples mind works. So I majored psych" or "WWII movies are kinda neat so history sounded cool I guess" and are surprised when jobs don't fall in their laps after grad because they're being taken by people with actual passion. My former colleague whos a fellow medievalist got a top tier PhD position predominantly because of his familiarity with Latin and ability to do translations. Thing is, he was a MA when I was a BA and we were doing the same, end-level Latin courses. You can literally make yourself stand out before you even graduate. If you really want to succeed, you will!

I think something important to keep in mind is that students who pursue certain majors tend to be self-selected. So, just because 12.78% of computer science & mathematics majors don't regret their major, it doesn't mean that only 12.78% of students in general would regret choosing such a major. I'm a senior computer science major who chose computer science largely because I heard of statistics like computer science majors rarely regretting their major choice, but I completely ignored my heart and how I am as an individual, and now I regret my choice.

@@vulpeszerda349 well I didn’t actually get a CS degree (i did math/physics), but from what i know about the CS curriculum it is very theoretical. Most of the topics you study in a CS degree you will never use unless you go into academia or if your job is as a specialist in some area (like distributed systems). Software engineering really only requires basic programming skills. For example, if you become a frontend dev (which it seems you may be interested in), you will really only need to know HTML, CSS, Javascript, and some frameworks. You will never use anything you learned in your data structure, algorithms, etc courses.

“The reason you go to college is to learn a specialized skill that will prepare you for a career in the real world.” I see where you’re coming from, but you’re operating on a premise that you haven’t really justified. It’s certainly *a* reason, and it’s not a bad one, but I think it’s a bit of a reach to assume that’s the primary reason to seek higher education. Now that’s certainly the founding principle of vocational/professional/polytechnic degrees and institutions, but I am not sure the assertion that it’s *the* reason people get a degree is a fair or accurate appraisal. You are correct. Higher education and academia have "evolved" (devolved??) in some places over time. They used to be known as meccas of real study and innovation in sciences of all kinds with strong faculties closely tied to their industries decades ago. When it started becoming apparent that higher education could be leveraged for employment purposes, the narrative shifted towards the capitalization of academia and a carbon copy style of education that a lot of young graduates hated so much. Now, everyone realizes that direct specialization and experience is important or you won't get hired. Vocational opportunities abound too, but some of these are also outright diluted and opportunistic at worst. College/Uni is at a weird crossroads where they use to signify the edge of science and discourse but are now factories responsible for producing skilled workers. Because of that, there are many poor professional paths mixed in with decent ones which is not an ideal for helping people economically.

I only received my diploma last summer so it’s only been a year but I managed to move to France for a year which is something I’ve been wanting for years. Granted, it was a low paying teaching assistant job but I got to experience so many amazing things here that I wouldn’t have been able to experience if I didn’t major in French so the low pay honestly didn’t bother me much especially since I knew it was only a one year thing. I’m back tracking for a bit, I’m going to go back to the States for a year and save up money to do a masters in France, I’m thinking of moving into the psychology field, which while it’s not directly related to having a French degree, I will be living in studying in France which makes it handy. I plan to live in France long-term, even after my masters so for me I feel like having that degree is helpful, but maybe not for everyone! I think the important thing is to ask yourself if you really want to major in French. Does it make you happy? Do you enjoy it? What sort of opportunities could you envision yourself having with this degree versus another degree? Your opinion is the most important one to consider since it is your future and your life. Maybe to some I haven’t been successful so far since I’m currently poorer than I was in high school, but I have made so many great friends from so many different countries and I’ve had so many amazing experiences that I wouldn’t trade for the world, so in my book I’d say that I’ve been pretty damn successful (:

Teachers work only 3/4 of the year, get top of the line fringe benefits, all kinds of setasides from the government and banks, and get every holiday off. I WISH i had that deal.

But the kids are bad. My late mother was a teacher, so I grew up around a lot of teachers. By the time she retired in 2004, she and all her friends had come to despise teaching because of the worsening discipline problems. My godsister taught math for the past 9 years, and she has a master's as well. Atlanta Public Schools would pay her $91k if she were returning to teach this year, but she hates teaching so much that she's not going back.

I studied B.A. Bachelor's degree in English, but the great difference is that I am from Costa Rica. English was very difficult for me, and I never understood it until I decided to study it at college, for me it was the best decision ever, but I know I must study another degree. Nevertheless, being able to write and speak English opens a lot of professional opportunities in Latin American countries 💕

I graduated from a prestige college with a degree in psychology I regret the hell out of it . Although I dont regret learning about the information on mental illness . But its not a degree to go if you dont want to go get a Master right away . You can barley do anything with a Bachelor . Even front desk and inside sales sometimes requires administrative skills and using excel which we dont do that often in psychology. I didnt want to go to grad school right away cuz I was broke so I wanted to make some money maybe go later Turned out freakin hard to make some decent cash with a psych degree

@Panda Angry is a bachelors in business data analytics worth it ( the program has machine learning business finance and a programming course aswell )or is something general like Econ or Computers ,Statistics better ? I wanna do a masters afterwards most probably in Computer science or IT
@aena5995 Жыл бұрын
@Panda Angry oh sorry there's a comma I meant Statistics as a major since most jobs I have been looking at related to data science say we need a quantitative bachelor's so I am scared if having a business data analytics bachelor's science would set me back or put me on a back foot as it's still a new program is it true that 6 figures is possible after the bachelor's only ? And do u think 4 years from now the demand would be there since not that many unis have analytics bachelor's yet so I am just scared to go into something so new while everyone says it's better to stick to something basic but I know I wouldn't be interested enough if it's just statistics economics I wanted to do computer science but can't do that cuz of requirements in my country is it possible to transition into being being a data scientist or something in software engineer after this program ? A new program however the uni is number 1 in IT but I am sure I wanna move abroad as soon as possible after that . and yes this program has courses like Machine learning Deep learning Data Dashboards Statistical interference AI in banking NLP etc it's mostly data sciences courses and 1 or 2 programming classes probably covering just python R stuff that's useful in data or business analytics, there's also specialisation in Fintech Marketing Analytics HR analytics so I can take Finance classes accounting entrepreneurship elective there's even corporate law in it yeah I can't find much information about it it's kinda new and the university said their focus is mostly on getting the students to form their own Startups but since I wanted to do Computer science and the merit for that (in my country u need extremely high merit and weird requirements to get into programs it's not like u can just pay ur way in) I was even considering going abroad for that but feel like instead of wasting time in visas and stuff I should just start uni already 😔😔 these two seem kind of similar to MIS, should I do it ? Edit: okay some places do offer the Management information systems program but the unis are not top 10 in the country and out side of my city💀💀 should I continue with business data analytics the uni that's offering it is number 1 in IT in the country tho I m bit scared though if it would limit me I m considering the certifications aswell what interested me was that it has data science related courses too not just programming

I do agree with the physical sciences and it is always good to formulate a solid plan with multiple backups. I am currently working on my chemistry degree and my main goal is pharmacology, but my backups are high school chemistry/math teacher (Canadian teachers are paid well), lab technician, and I am minoring in computer science as a contingency plan in case it takes me a while to find a job in the field of chemistry. So it’s good to hope for the best and be prepared for the worst.

Some good degrees in healthcare: 1. Physical therapy (competitive but very good pay) 2. Ultrasound diagnosis and therapeutics (very large demand) 3. Physician-Assistant 4. Podiatry (a long haul, but good earnings) 5. Osteopathy 6. Hearing aid doctor of audiology 7. Medical records technology 8. Doctor of optometry (very good earnings if you start your own business) Very few of the people who choose these regret them. There are sometimes "turf" issues, but most do very well. I hear what you're saying about biology-related degrees being bad if you only get an undergrad but i would like to point out that IF you go the distance to at least a master's, then many of the careers waiting for you on the other end are not just satisfactory -- they are lucrative: 1) biostatistician, 2) nursing, doctor, anything medical related, 3) professor. Also, the job security is rock solid for all 3 of those categories. So you might hate life for another 2-3 years while in grad school but everybody has a period in their lives like that and the payoff is huge.

Well actually jobs in academia are really hard to get because far more people go to grad school than there are positions. Also you need a PhD. And they’re not well paying jobs unless you’re very lucky. And medical school means hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, very difficult to get into, making 50k a year while constantly working during your residency, etc. So, there are still downsides.

Hi! I’m about to graduate with my BA in English-creative writing and a minor in technical and professional writing. You really do need a good, solid plan when pursing this degree. Teaching college is definitely doable with a Master’s, and it’s always needed. However, there are so many other options out there. I’m going into copy editing with the goal of entering the publishing field, so all of my classes were tailored with this in mind. Technical editing is also doable because of my minor, so I recommend adding a minor as well to expand your skills. Also, please get an internship or a job on campus at your college’s writing center and/or literary journal. It’s completely possible to get an amazing job, but a good plan is necessary to start on the right foot, leading to a fantastic career.

Look at job listings in the area you want to live in. See what is required. In some cities, Chemistry is in high demand, with >$50k incomes being very common, and even some >$100k jobs with just a bachelor's required in some big cities. The key is looking at the skills surrounding the degree in the job listing. Make sure you develop those skills. Seek extra research opportunities, seek conference travel, do internships to get those skills. Doors open for students, and you are more likely to have support in learning those skills while you're a student. And fundamentally, understanding the field you are pursuing before getting a degree is the key to not being disappointed in your choice. Look at job ads or talk to members of that community to see what kinds of tasks you'll do, what a normal day looks like. If you don't like the work, don't do the school.
