The Tombow "fudenosuke" brush blue plastic ruler is a guide for writing kanji vertically. It helps space the characters - the left side is for four characters, the right side is for five characters - mostly for writing names.

Awww I have the "art supply box for xmas" memory too! My mom ordered a whole box of stuff from Opus one year and it had watercolours, and a huge box of prismacolours, and probably some other things and I was just blown away! I can count on one hand how many times I've received an art-related gift, so it really stands out. Nostalgia!

I totally relate to your Xmas present story. When i was about the same age, my parents were financially better off than the previous few years so we got spoiled a bit & my mom got me all kinds of arts & craft supplies that she wrapped individually. Honestly the reason why this piece feels more "fun" or just, idk, better in a way? Is because it's out of your usual comfort zone! It's a male, he has a strong facial expression and the colors aren't the usual ones you go for a lot! This piece felt really refreshing and really nice!
