I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease as a toddler and Tourette’s syndrome as an adolescent. I vividly remember times when I literally could not have face to face conversations with people because one of my ticks was a very violent rolling of my eyes, and anyone who didn’t know about it would be very put off. Hard to make friends, got made fun of for it, all of which only made my Crohn’s and my stomach worse, and the cycle would repeat. Started smoking when I was 17 and within 2 weeks, no longer had visible ticks. As long as I didn’t go more than 3 days without smoking, my Tourette’s no longer manifested. Didn’t have to be high - just needed to have it in my system from a day or two previously. Then I realized how much it helped me with my stomach, and also the anxiety that always made my stomach even worse. It’s literally saved my quality of life and even I’m afraid to tell people I smoke. I don’t drink or do any other drugs, but I still feel shame. This convo helped me.

Awesome, man. I was 17 when my stomach issues had gotten so bad I would be in the middle of a conversation with someone and fall to my knees in pain. I've had all kinds of injuries and broken bones but nothing could compare to how the pain I would randomly feel in my stomach felt. I've never been stabbed in the stomacb but I image it would feel similar to that. I got to the point I would avoid eating for long peroids of time just so I wouldn't have to deal with the pain. I went to a lot of doctors appointments trying to figure out what was going on but after I had a doctor imply I was lying I gave up. A few months later I started smoking daily and it didn't take long to realize I rarely had stomach pain anymore and when I did it wasn't nearly as bad. That was almost 20 years ago now when society made you feel like a disgusting criminal for smoking. It's crazy how much things have change in that regard.
