Man, I gotta say, Splattercat, if you are digging this game AT ALL, we all really, really want you to go play the 1st one. Steam has a Remastered Collection that brings the graphics up to modern standards so it won't hurt your eyes at all. And if you want a good story in an RTS? I'd say it's one of the best stories I've seen in ANY GAME. Honestly watching you stream that as a new player with fresh eyes would be kind of awesome to see.

The first game is the best by far. You're playing as essentially refugee space pirates with a fleet of mostly hijacked ships. You can even steal enemy carriers. It's very scrappy and very unique.

I think they got the theming down pat, but the depth... Earlier Homeworld games had unit veterancy, rewarding you for keeping units alive between missions. Homeworld 2 had customize-able capital ship subsystems you could also target on the enemy.

Reminds me of Dawn of War 3. Thematically fine, slight deviation in art direction, but still thematically on point. Has all the foundations to be a great game, but fumbled at the last hurdle with gameplay that lacks depth. Like Dawn of War 3, I wasn't enthralled enough to finish the campaign. I rate the game 5/10. It's "fine" as a game. Mediocre, passing grade. If you love the series, get it on discount, beautiful visuals and sound design, meh gameplay. Not worth full price.

It's a good first game for people, but it feels like they geared it toward a fast-paced multiplayer audience but then backed off that from the Beta and now we're left with an weak entry if you were a fan. I hope that the content roadmap + modding can keep it alive and potentially expand it.

In Homeworld, 'Aggressive' means fly straight at your target as much as possible. 'Defensive' means try to keep out of the firing arc of your target. Unlike some other games, I believe units won't just engage nearby enemies without you designating their target. It's vital for capital ships to control their facing and not just start rotating to face the first enemy that squares up.

In HW1, Aggressive also meant you transferred power to weapons from defensive systems, i.e. your unit would do more damage while also taking more damage.

HW1, HW: Cataclysm and HW2were all great. Deserts of Kharak much less so, but I can see how they were trying really hard to respect and live up to the legacy of it's predecessors, even if the level design didn't always succeed (or was sometimes just plain bullshit). This though? Even leaving the entire Denuvo distrust and disrespect for the players aside (which should not be ignored or diminished), I'm going to have to wait at least a couple of months and see how the reviews level out, there's too much ranting from far too many folks to tell yet. Here's hoping that there's actually a good game to be found here, though it's not looking very likely at this moment.

Wasnt a fan.. at all. Homeworlds were space epics where voice lines were eerily professional and stoic for the very reason that when professionalism is broken by sadness, desperation, awe or hope, it highlights it. Maps took long to get over and when you finally did, you chose to leave the area when you were done. This one was soap opera which spent more time staring at Imogen S'jet floating in the core than it did fleshing out the upcoming disaster. HW1 and 2 were epic survival stories of a culture with godlike soundtracks and sheer scale of the universe making everything grandiour. HW:C was desperate combat against horrifying galactic threat. HW3 is just never ending tirade of techno babble and close shots of the lady in the core..

There's also that if you're in the US, the agreement specifies you forgo your right to class action lawsuits against them. You have to do arbitration (which companies win 95% of the time, since the arbitration orgs are kind of incentivized to let them win, or they won't get paid for long).

This is the full game. The season pass dlcs and freelcs are only for one specific game mode. The PvE coop Rougelike mode. Skirmish is as is.

combat, lol nah this game is story driving like no other, or it use too, the combat was a side note of the hole game, but if you are only into the combat there is co-op mode , MP, so on, but a real Home World feel and depth to the game it self, naf never got there.

It apparently is on mixed reviews on steam and it is a shame. I will not buy it on the grounds of the use of Denuvo DRM and a frankly insane EULA/end user agreement but apparently, it also got quite dumbed down comparatively to previous titles. Guess I'll just play Homeworld 2 modded.

If I understand the problem, it follows a philosophy of having abilities be short-term buffs instead of traditional homeworld abilities which are toggleable trade-offs. This turns the game into a fast-paced clickfest where APM is king, instead of the more brainy strategical approach of the older titles. Other issues are fixable but this one goes too deep.

Glad you covered this Splat. It's got a lot of problems. The story and music and voice acting are on point, but the depth of combat and units and strategy is missing compared to the previous games, plus the Denuvo thing (which in 2024 is just ridiculous to have on a game)... It really feels like a corpo-rat missfire here :( Unfortuante, because Cataclysm is one of my favorite games of all time.

This game is the best....., in recommending that you buy the or play the other two HW, the AI doesn't understand the 3D environment, charging you in a straight line, also doesn't understand that you are threating it, just move over or below and won't attack until you attack, the fighters squadron are threated as one unit not as individual unit, the deep of combat is "spam unit until win" and that mean you can burn the 12 missions campaign in 6 hours .... The best part of the game is Denuovo DRM and the main character looks like Handsome Squidward and not in a good way

It was just so liberating to control an RTS in 3D space for the time. Splat is letting the game speak here, and yeah it's giving me chills. I think it might be worth a purchase indeed. I almost don't want to watch the rest of this video, but I think I will because it'll be a few weeks until I can play it, and I'm looking forward to it.

Homeworld 1 has the most extreme moment of save scumming I've had in all my years as a gamer. I wanted to save _all_ the cryo trays. And also steal as many ships as possible! 😅 I have the music, the atmosphere, the voicelines burned into my mind even to this day 🤩 The entire game was highly save scum worthy though, to be fair 😆

I played the original in 1999. It was perfect. They remastered it at some point and that was also great. The thing that caught my eye in this version was deviation from the original design philosophy, the mothership was big and vertical to accentuate the perspective. The missions followed suit. This version is mostly flat plan which is fine but, makes it look like any other modern rts space game. This was a marketing decision certainly and shows it is after less of the art of crafting a great game and more of “print monies por favor” It's brand new so it could improve. I'll wait until it does. Great job as always SC. 🔥

Interestingly I know why that is: There's a gfx setting enabled by default that scales the apparent size of all ships up/down for 'visibility' reasons. So scouts are MASSIVELY scaled up when you zoom out even slightly. Disable that and suddenly things are scaled right size wise. (Mind you, the Mothership can outrun scouts still, because holy lord the game design is BAD.)

Was so excited for this game until I saw it has Denuvo. Nope, no buy for me then, and am glad it got the Mixed review score to reflect our opposition to it. Also, it's pretty appalling seeing the anti-consumer comments under the main steam review that pointed out the Denuvo. Never fails to amaze me how they think that a "lol git gud" tone is supposed to be a compelling argument for me.

1st two games ( HM2 to degree as well ) have very particular atmosphere of desperate struggle for survival amids highly hostile universe. There were no characters on screen, but instead great voice-acting conveyed emotions precisely, everything felt alive, even the setting itself. Resources where very limited, every ship you managed to salvage felt priceless because you can't mass produce that, once its gone its gone forever. HM3 doesn't feel the same way. You have ocean of resources. You need to explore the anomaly, ok. What anomaly? Why? How its related to ''our" space nation or situation? What are those characters and why whould i feel emotionally attached to them? Whats even the threat? Are they even strugling againt anything, or is it just their everyday desk job? Pirates backed by some unknown entities? Idk man, this feel whatever. Production values are here, but there is nothing else. Also get that Imogen lady a haircut, she need that asap.

Furthermore, the layout and design seem like this game was intended for mobile devices rather than the PC, especially considering the fake 3D space when you are really limited to the 2D plane. Oh, but the missiles going for the mothership can move above the 3D plane and your missile interceptors though.

Maxing resource controllers makes sense to me asap. Also docking will heal your mens, and there is a "grab damaged craft" button in the interface for a group of ships. Cheers.

There's a consistent problem with remaking the wheel...often, you end up with too many corners. Looks like Cataclysm will remain my personal favorite title in the HW franchise, doesn't even need a remastering. The original is a close second if you ignore the whole fuel mechanic. This one is looking a lot like Deserts of Kharak. It's not without its charms and is a worthy attempt at extending the IP, but doesn't seem to do enough to capture the imagination or wow the audience as well as it's older counterparts. I had hoped HW3 would sneak in a call back to Cat with the Beast reemerging as a potential adversary, but the age-old Imperial Taiidani remnants just won't freaking die all ready. I'll pick it up when it goes on sale, but this doesn't feel like full price material to me just yet.

The original games were awesome, but I didn't end up playing them until around 2012 (around the time that Gearbox bought the rights to the franchise) as my computer at the time they originally released couldn't run them. I then played them again when the remastered versions came out.

What else do you call a game that deals with the applied implications of politics, religion, genocide, through the lens of an egalitarian United Kushani people? Karan S’jet was basically THE boss of the first one. It’s a story where gasp a person has difficulties living up to the damn near impossible expectations and standard of their relative who basically was space Moses. Don’t read the Bible then, or else you’ll shortly come across a man named Joshua who felt the weight of Moses’s legacy and an entire fucking nation to conquer. I’ve played the games and therefore been a devoted fan since I got my copy Christmas morning 1999. Read the manual about 300 times over as a kid. This is a Homeworld game. It needs work on balancing and definitely needs more story but make no mistake this is a good Homeworld game and has the bones to be a great one.

Loved the original Homeworld games and been looking forward to this one for a long time. Love the look of the new game mode and the new maps and visuals look awesome. Keeping mod support integrated was a big deal for me too. Mod teams would have pushed over any hurdles put in anyway but to actively support and encourage it is good to see. Huge BUT though...BUT that price tag 🤦‍♂️ Personally I'll be playing modded Homeworld Remastered to scratch the Homeworld itch until that price comes way down. Brand new and shiny, maybe I'd jump in for £30-£40 tops but £60?! And typical to new big releases for years now, there's signs of "not quite fully cooked yet but we'll patch that" going on. Long term though if the modding community that pops up around this is even half of what original Homeworld had, this is going to turn into a game that'll hang around on your drive for years to come(or at least be reinstalled regularly to take it for a spin)

a warning about homeworld games. you keep resources, damage and units between maps, meaning you can softlock yourself out of the game. the map is fully 3d so you will have combats in small spaces that you can't see from the outside.

Great looking game. Now, a small easter-egg for you nerds over 30 years old who love anime: who among you remembers "Vandread"? They had a similar concept of an entity moving the entire ship, just as Imogen here. On the anime, the sentient ship's core was called Pragma Paxis, and eventually it bestowed the character Bart to become one with the ship's core, thus, taking on a VERY similar role as we see here. Did they take inspiration from a 25 year old anime? No one will ever know. But the similarities are there. ;)

@@MauMenzori There is some overlap and some differences. Vandred had Bart join with the ship's core that could operate somewhat independently but benefited from it. HW 1's Mothership got Karen to pilot it because they couldn't make a computer that could handle the job, and she suggested the radical step of using someone's brain to do it, wiring them directly to the ship. She took the risk herself because Karen S'Jet is basically a saint in terms of morality and the risks were extreme. IIRC when the first game ended, it took them a couple of years to figure out how to safely decouple her from the ship because the links were that invasive and experimental. I suspect both sets of writers came up with these similar ideas independently of each other, though they might both have some older Sci-Fi story that inspired them.

Oh dear, did I love the first of the series. But I had to quit, because there where still emerging frigates out of my mothership after I took a short vacation on the ceramic seat. And I knew there where battleships also part of the opening deployments inventory. That first mothership was completly illfitted to properly support a measly fleet of Salvage Frigates.

The interceptors lining up in formation outside the ship reminds me Knights of Sidonia, which makes me think.... somebody HAS to have made a version of this sort of game where you're a colony ship trying to keep the last remnants of humanity alive till you can find a planet to settle. Like, cross this sort of gameplay with a little bit of say, Frostpunk, or whatever. Space Combat, resource gathering, plus managing your community of survivors and conditions inside the ship.

I watched a playthrough and if you are in any way a Homeworld 1 and 2 (and Cataclysm and Deserts of Kharak, ofc) fan, stay far away from this. Let me explain: The ony thing going for this game are the visuals and the soundscape. Outside of those two, the game is a an absolute mess. The story, one of the most important pillars of a homeworld franchise, is marvel-tier garbage writing. It's incoherent, the characters are completely forgettable, every emotional moment misses the mark. There is no tension, no drama, no stakes. The dialogue might as well have been written by AI for all the inflection and personality it conveys. There are no "Kharak is burning" or "Bring Sajuuk to bear" moments, just a vast emotional emptiness that only a corporate HR-pilled writer could create. The gameplay has massive issues too. Enemy and Friendly AI are exceptionally underdeveloped. Pathfinding (yes, pathfinding in a space 3D game) is at 1996 command and conquer/red alert level. The main feature of the game focuses on battles around giant megastructures, which is cool in theory as you can maneuver the fighters through the trenches and tunnels of said structures. In practice, the AI cannot take advantage of those, nether your units nor the enemies, as units keep getting stuck on terrain. The AI had issues targetting an onobstructed target in open space, mostly due to how formations are implemented. They are way too ridgit and do not allow the small craft to maneuver, which makes strike craft completely useless as they can't dogfight effectively. The enemy AI is only capable of one strategy, which is sending all their units in a single file directly towards you, while your fleet obliderates them. Most missions feel like tower defense levels, which is amplified further by the addition of turrets that get places on space terrain. In most missiosn you can just set up your fleet in a position and go afk, which will give you the win the vast majority of the time. There isnt a shadow of strategy in HW3. The unit composition has equally taken a hit. Strike craft become obsolete the minute the frigates roll off the assembly line, and those become obsolete the minute destroyers and battlecruisers roll out. Destroyers and Battlecruisers are now anti-everything units, equally effective vs capital ships and strike craft. Resources are so plentiful in the game, replacing units becomes a trivial mechanic, which heavily contributes to the lack of tension or challenge in the game. Hard mode doesnt help; it just turns enemies into slightly more damaging bullet sponges, which can be defeated using the exact same AFK strategy described above, except you might have to occaisionally rebuild some units. The campaign is, no joke, 8 hours long (I believe it was 11 missions or so). Most missions can be completed in

Agree with all, but I wish to add, that world lore is also bastardized. Highara is shown as a desert planet covered in dust clouds (mission 1 is on Highara), Base Runner units are still in use decades or hundred of years after Desert of Kharak events, so developers mistook Kharak with Highara or what? There is plenty of DEI ideology, story is non-existent, ship interiors are... well, there arent any, except one room simulating a very tiny bridge copied from Gundam Unicorn Colony Builder in a tyiny scale, Kith markings and colors arre wrong, and so on.... Also, someone wished to put a tension from Star Wars with planet killing... Christ, who made this? This is a complete garbage, this is a Homeworld-like game, not Homeworld 3! Well, no, the Khar-Kushan, figter and bomber designs are good..., but that's all because "zealots" ships are lazy kit-bashed progenitor units with Sajuk. In my opinion, RIP Homeworld.
