Waylon Jennings was in Buddy Holly's band and was supposed to be on the plane that went down. But traded seats with someone. He always felt guilty after the fact that it wasn't him.

The Johnny Cash part always brings a tear to my eyes and that was true even before he died. Maybe because the other guys are talking about something that already happened and Cash is singing of a future event but the poetry of the spirit finding rest or becomming a aingle drop of rain hits me in the feels.

2nd guy(sailor) is Kris Kristopherson--singer/songwriter and the 3rd guy(Dam Builder) is Waylon Jennings who is the Step-Grandfather of Struggle Jennings. Fun fact. Also Waylon was the guitarist of Buddy Holly's and he gave up his seat on the airplane to the Big Bopper, and that airplane crashed and killed Buddy HOlly and the others on it.

Written by the great Jimmy Webb. Refers to writing this after a night of “professional drinking” and dreaming about being a highwayman chased by the police. He says he woke up and began writing The Highwayman. He recorded it in 1977, followed by Glen Campbell in 1978 with a 1979 release. But this SuperGroup made it a Hit.

All these men are friends. Kris Kristofferson is also a song writer. He wrote Sunday Morning Coming Down. Kris brought the song to Johnny by flying a helicopter and landing it on Johnny's land. No one knew who Kris was then. But Johnny took the demo tape and preformed the song on his TV show.

Mr. Boyd all of these Highwaymen did as you said, they Worked Hard until they were Recognized! They all wrote, sang and entertained for all they were worth. Fear not this Rabbit hole. As The Highwaymen, maybe three albums of pure bliss. Individually hundreds of songs recorded. In concert they sang most of their own stuff and covered tons more of great songs by others. You're a lucky Man to discover these Super Stars.... The Amelas One

Dam Builder Waylon Jennings sang theme song, played that same guitar opening The Dukes of Hazzard. He was also rhe narrator. His widow is Jessi Colter...I'm Not Lisa. She wrote Storms Never Last to/for/about Waylon. It was also a big hit for Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. Waylon did Luckenbach Texas (The Basics of Love) which mentions Willie and Waylon and the boys. The Schooner Sailor is legendary singer/songwriter Kris Kristopherson. And, of course you already know about Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash.

For me it's not about reincarnation, but rather about some sort of spirit which cannot live safely in home, but must do more. Gain riches, explore new lands, take a part in building very big dam - even if everyone says it is a risky job. Highwayman can be caught, sailor may drown, dam-builder may have accident at work. Even when we go to space there always be people with those highwayman vibe, who want more from live than just keeping on course.

Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson were the "Outlaws" of country music for many years. While they are popular now (Waylon RIP) they were not traditionally accepted by some mainstream country music (snobs my opinion). They also came out with an album by the same name that included Jessie Colter (Waylon's wife) and Tompall Glaser. David Allen Coe was also associated with them at the time among others. Kristofferson is an amazing songwriter but never had the voice to carry a carrier.

i don't think its speaking to reincarnation in particular. i think it speaks to the spirit of the type of man who was a highwayman, a sailor, a builder, or a pilot. the type of man that has the grit to live on the edge, go to work doing the most dangerous things and risk his life for it. i think it speaks to the spirit of that type of individual...where they may die but the spirit of what made them who they were will always endure. there will always be those individuals who live and thrive on the edge of danger, where many of us couldn't. the song pays homage to that type of person.
