The line is “every man has to die”, but the sentiment is the same. The most important line in the song is the last “We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms”
@rossmacintosh5652

Peter, I think you are right about that being the most important line. Many people miss what Knopfler is saying about war by only seeing 'brothers in arms' as the friends who have your back. Instead, Knopfler realizes all the soldiers, including those on the other side, are brothers in arms.

An incredible song written by Mark Knopfler, he wrote it during the Falklands War in 1982, but of course it can refer to any conflict. This song is so powerful and emotional, Mark's guitar sound goes straight to your soul, and the video is so evocative. The lyric is actually 'every man has to die', I love this song, it is so deep, and in my opinion, it's a masterpiece. Dire Straits formed in London in 1977 and their catalogue is huge. I know you've reacted to 'Sultans of Swing', I would certainly recommend 'Telegraph Road' from the Alchemy concert and I would also recommend the live version of 'Brothers in Arms' from (On the Night Live), it's epic! ❤❤

Mark Knopfler doesn't play guitar to show off. He knows he doesn't need to shred. And he knows how not to play too much, how to make the pause and the silence as powerful as the notes he does play.

This is an Anti-war song. In the first two verses, the speaker is addressing his own comrades, the "brothers in arms". Only in the final line does it become clear that all enemy soldiers are also meant by the "brothers in arms". We are all human beings, and in this function "brothers in arms" - "We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms"!

As a young South African in the 80's this song struck a deep chord in many of us who went of to fight in the bush war this song carried many of us through the best and worst of times and fought in a war not all of us believed in and among us there were all colors and creeds but we were all brothers. Years later I used to work with a man who was my enemy during that war and even he was my brother.

Mark Knopler wrote this song in response to the Falkland War (1982) and Dire Straits released it in 1985. (Another senseless war between Argentina and UK over a few small islands. Prince Andrew flew helicopters in this war.) And, yes, check out Home Free's version (the arrangement was done by the Finnish a capella group Club For Five); one of HF's best. Yes, this song reminds me of how the Vietnam vets were poorly treated (I remember). It also reminds me of today's conflicts/ wars. We never learn. We're fools to make war with our brothers in arms.

Senseless war in 1982 yes, but with enormous significance which you would do well to research and understand before dismissing it "over a few small islands". This was a war unlike any the US has entered into since the war of independence, it was over a genuine invasion od British Territory where the local population had no desire whatsoever to live under Argentinian rule.

Perfect Memorial Day selection. To Americans this song resonates with the Viet Nam experience, but Knopfler wrote this as Great Britain was involved with the Falkland war in the early 1980's. Another tribute song he wrote in honor of his uncle's experience in WW2 is Piper to the End - well worth a listen. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJKXZp-Ei9Grnrs Knopfler's ability to express so many emotions sets him beyond any typical rocker, and his guitar skills are in the top echelons.

Fitting tribute for Memorial Day, BP. I remember Dire Straits during the 80s & this song is a sobering reminder of the price paid by so many who fought in wars. I always kinda felt like Dire Straits sounded like what you'd get if you combined Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers with Eric Clapton. Mark Knoffler's voice & guitar just have that vibe. They're a perfect blend of awesomeness & deserve much more recognition today than they get. Their Bros in Arms album was great & set a record for the 1st album to sell over 1 million copies in CD format. If you want a little bit lighter side of them, Money for Nothing (written as a result of a conversation overheard in line at a store) and Walk of Life (video is awesome, too) would be 2 suggestions. In addition, there's "So Far Away" from the same album, which was a hit. Btw...get you some Burt's Bees lip balm for those dry lips, buddy.

Mark K. is 74 years old and still working in music. His latest album came out in April 2024. Illsley, the same age, has switched from music to visual arts and also owns a pub and some hotels.

You forgot Stevie Ray Vaughn...the best guitarist in my opinion. Yes Knopfler here from Dire Straits is ranked up there as a fine guitarist...

Yep, it’s Mark Knopler. But there is a song you probably do know. It played constantly in the late 80’s when this album came out and was the new wave via MTV & rock radio …you have to check out “Money for Nothing”…probably their most famous song - and yeah, it is what it means… The first song on that album “So far away” and “Walk of Life” are also really good. The entire “Brothers In Arms” album is great. One day when you need to just listen to something to burn some time, set this album through streaming on play and just listen to it in entirety. You won’t be disappointed…

Dire Straits have a great back catalogue....something like Single-handed Sailor (Live at Rockpalast) showcases how tight they were as a band. But here are plenty of tracks of the first two albums in particular that just have a great groove.

The best line in this song is "we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms". When people learn who and what every war has really been fought for, they will understand that every soldier fought against is a brother in arms and they have always been fighting for the only enemy of the people of the world. The real enemy that learnt long ago, how to make us all believe our enemies are our brothers in arms in other countries. Now they rule 194 countries.

Marines are hard core...but this band is British...I'll tell you when I lived there they don't ever let people forget about the 2 World Wars....

So true, it’s still in their face too. Was in London in 2014 and one of the tube lines was shut down, they found an unexploded bomb left from WW2 during construction. Was in a pub one night, bartender could tell I’m American, we get to chatting about things and he asks where my family “hailed from”. I said like most Americans, all over, Greece, Italy, Scotland and Germany. He says “Germany ‘eh? You know they bombed us”.

Thank you for understanding how it felt to be spit at and called a baby killer for serving my country Black Pegasus. We were sent to not win a conflict that made politicians rich and killed over 58,000 of my brothers and 850,000 VC. How many innocent civilians were killed I don't know! I still dislike Jane Fonda and her kind for that loss of all those young men. I stopped waving my flag but don't let me see you burning one! Hate is a four-letter word and I reserve it for Jane only in my life. She sold out prisoners of war in Hanoi. Many were beaten to death because of her actions. Look it up, I want to sleep tonight! If every warrior realized that there is NOTHING worth dying for.....nothing; there would be no war. If everyone said no, the leaders could fight as we watch, rather than the other way around.
