As a Swedish foreign exchange student in the U.S I can tell you that if you actually put effort in to starting a conversation with a foreign exchange student you will most likely become their friend

As an exchange student I learned that it's just easier to hang out with other exchange students- you're always getting put together for one thing, and for another, all of the... "locals"? Already have their friends and their routines and it's really hard to break into those groups. Even if you join a club or something, you'll likely spend most of the time in the corner. Whenever I see an exchange student or like, new residents, I'm going to go out of my way to reach out to them cuz I get it now.

I have a Chinese transfer girl in my class and she is so nice and gives every girl hugs, but she sings songs she found on TikTok. Like a lot. I’m not in most of her classes, but I’ve heard it in the hallways and in the few classes I share with her. She also does the “only talk to other transfers” during art because there’s another Chinese transfer in there, so while the rest of us are just working on art, the two are just talking up a storm in Chinese (Mandarin?)
