The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

Күн бұрын

The frontier culture meets civilization in rural Virginia. In 1912, a misplaced kiss set off a string of events that pitted a powerful frontier clan against their political rivals and concepts of modern justice. The events that followed, the Hillsville Massacre or the Courthouse Tragedy, shocked and captivated the nation.
The episode is intended for educational purposes. All events are portrayed in historical context. No graphic depictions of violence are depicted.
The History Guy uses media that are in the public domain. As photographs of actual events are sometimes not available, photographs of similar objects and events are used for illustration.

when the History channel started, all they had was documentaries on WW2, so much that after a few months we jokingly referred to it as "The Hitler Channel". They really struggled for content in the beginning before they began to self produce decent content. Then they got bought by some massive corporation and they're not worth watching anymore

I lived in the town where the two brothers fled to in North Carolina for 25 years, and went on well over a dozen trips to Hillsville over that time. It's a testament to how forgotten this story is, by the fact I'd never heard of it until watching this video. On a more pleasant note, Carroll County, Virginia has some amazing scenery, features a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and grows the best apples I've ever eaten in my entire life.

I was so amazed to see this entry. My family has lived in Wythe County (next door to Carroll County) since the earth was cooling. My aunt, who was born in 1904, remembered when this happened and a man came rushing in to tell them that “The Allen’s had shot up the Carroll County courthouse!” I even got to read a contemporary news article about it, but you had more information. Thank you! I love this series.

Thank you for this vid. I remember my daddy telling me this story when I was small. We were on a family vacation, passing through the area and drove by a house of one of the actors in this tale. I sat in the back seat enthralled by his storytelling. If I remember correctly, I think there had been a family member of ours present at the courthouse that day, so not only was it a historical footnote, but a family story as well.

The Sydney Allen shootout is a story everyone hears at some point. Most of our county events are held on Main Street, in front of the courthouse where the holes are still visible. This was a fantastic summary, well made, and historically as accurate as possible. Tha k you for telling it!

o2tank 04 perhaps horrible events are represented, but as stated in the video, it’s representative of the changing times. An era and paradigm shift in the publics frontier mentality in that place at that time. Looking back we are often highly sensitive to certain issues because of our political climate, but the people living then were more akin to war hardened soldiers who get in fist fights for the sheer joy of it. 2 fun facts: First off this is still a contentious subject in Carrol County and descendants of the Allen family will still argue about what happened. Secondly, the detective agency employed by the state of Virginia were from the Baldwin-Felts Detective agency, the same agency that eight years later was involved in the Matewan Massacre. Your right. Sociopaths, Psychopaths, serial killers, serial rapists, etc can be traced back to the 9th.Century. However, they used words like madness, maniacal and possession. Though hard to find, there are manuscripts that speak of these hazards long before the words Psychiatric, etc came into existence.

If you haven't done a video on the Long clan and political dynasty in Louisiana, you should do one. Earl Long was an infamous orator whose silver tongue could weave blue language, or at least innuendo, into almost any situation. He was governor of Louisiana three times. Non-consecutively though, because the state had passed a constitutional amendment to prevent consecutive terms for their governors after suffering through the shenanigans of Earl's older brother, Huey P. Long. Their youngest brother, "Doc" Long was the longest serving Representative from Louisiana in the history of the state. He was still in Congress in the 1980's, serving as the head of one of the Committees that Charlie Wilson was on funding the Muj in Afghanistan in their fight against the Soviet Union. There is so much more to their story, so I'll leave you with a quote, "When I die, bury me in Louisiana so that I can continue to take part in electoral politics." -Governor Earl Long.

My ancestors were among the very first permanent White settlers along the White River here in N. Central Arkansas in 1816. They had to clear land and build houses and battle thieves and survive floods and harsh Winters and hot, humid Summers, and establish a community. They became prominent judges & lawyers and sheriffs and a preacher or two, and successful business men and were very well respected by everyone...BUT...they never resorted to tactics of murder and intimidation to get their way. These Allen men sound like psychotics or psychopaths. And it's not that they were 'rugged individuals'..they were just deranged and cruel and mean people. They would have been quickly run off and maybe killed by way of self defense if they had tried that around my ancestors. This was definitely an interesting story, but they get NO respect or admiration from me.

@marbleman - with all due respect to you and your ancestors, I am highly sceptical that in the time before law enforcement in remote and rural areas was adequately resourced and fairly administered, dominant influence over communities by powerful men and their families wasn't the norm, at least outside of the very few major cities that existed at that time.
@marbleman52
@marbleman52 6 жыл бұрын
LtCol....I want to be sure I understand what you said...that in the remote & rural areas of our country's beginnings, that the dominant influence ( meaning laws & law enforcement..? ) WAS by the powerful families..is that correct? I will agree to that, in general terms. I would want to be careful, however, when saying "powerful' men and their families, that the understood implication of that term 'powerful' did not automatically refer to unscrupulous and dirty-dealing, violent men....such as the Allens. Yes, our Country's History certainly has plenty of examples of these kinds of men and their treacherous, greedy influences upon the local population, but I believe that there were also plenty of good and just and powerful men and families that really cared for their communities. I know how my ancestors behaved and how important they were to the local community and the economy...and it sure wasn't like the Allens. I appreciate your input, it makes for an enjoyable and civilized discussion...thanks.
@pulaski1
@pulaski1 6 жыл бұрын
I was trying (while trying to be brief) to suggest that men and families who had dominant influence over their communities in the era before more enlightened approaches to law enforcement, often, likely invariably, fell short by some degree, of our expectations today. Sometimes they would have fallen short by a little, sometimes by more, and sometimes by a LOT. Bear in mind that horrible cases of corrupt and unlawful influence over law enforcement and the judicial system in the US wasn't uncommon in many rural areas of the South as recently as the 1960's.
