With 1.7% of the global GDP share, pharmaceutical sector holds a significant position at saving lives. Much investments and innovations come from the 'private sector' in forms of- R&D, clinical trials, capital for laboratories and machines, etc. The compelling drive behind these remains 'profit generation.' Hence, it is a global trend that a number of 'poor man's diseases' are neglected- for eg. about 20 tropical neglected diseases that affect over 1 billion people attract a meagre 0.35% of the investments. The Health Impact Fund is a detrimental promise towards incentivising the private players as it ensures profits from a 'central fund' from multiple governments. It also 'breaks the nexus' between pharmaceuticals and medical systems as the profits are based on 'impact' and not merely sales. Hence, the Health Impact Fund can go a long way in assuring "affordable availability" of much required medicines with a more 'efficient collective expenditure' by the governments towards a more equitable and healthier global society.

The presentation was nice. The paper published on the Hydroxychloroquine in Lancet and NEJM are based on the data base provided by Surgisphere regarding the details of Covid19 patients and their treatment results. This primary data not disclosed to any third party reviewers, so we cannout say that the article is peer reviewed. As the we are in global medical emergency, we can't blame the journal editor for not verifying/studying the data thoroughly. They have to publish newest information ASAP which seems to be relevant in this situation. Thank you

Recently a medical journal reported that the use of Hydroxychloroquine on COVID-19 patients not only had any benefits but resulted in higher mortality rate among them. Although the above conclusion was based on the study which had no scientific expertise it had lead to loss of confidence among medical professionals. This questions the means and methods used to collect the information. This had resulted in lack of clarity in medical facilities which could otherwise have helped the affected people . There should be strict measures to make sure the medical information written is accurate. Also, peer review needs to be done before concluding such baseless studies as it is a matter of life and death.

Pharma industry has been a civilizational backbone, contributing 1.7% of global GDP and out of that 55% of it is spent on brand name products which promises Companies handsome returns but Neglected Tropical Diseases become collateral damage in this whole process where they merely get 0.35%. An intriguing solution can be Health Impact Fund ( HIF ) which would be crowd funded by different govts to provide capital to pharma sector to carry out R&D for NTD to offset clinical losses and less remunerative opportunity cost. In India, this idea is worth the try considering TB burden of India ( 30% approx ) and this may give a shot in arm of govt as Govt plans to eradicate TB by 2025 under TB HAREGA DESH JEETEGA MISSION. If implemented this would strengthen already good position of India in pharmaceutical value chain where India is known as global pharmacy when India would be able to import goodwill ( incase of LDCs ) and earn $ ( incase of middle and higher income countries ). At macro level, in India, cess can be imposed to fund HIF corpus and pharma companies can also channelise their CSR contributions Lastly, India has a colossal potential to develop pharma solutions to present pandemic and in future also, with money for financing, it is quite doable and lets not treat this as crisis but an opportunity in desperate times to be of some help to global brethren and live upto our ancient motto - Vasudev Kutumbkam ( Whole world is our family )

Medical journals like Lancet is reputed journals which are regarded as the Crux source of medical information by health personnel and public.Therefore they should ensure scientific research and peer review to eliminate systematic bias.For example ensuring proper methodology for the collection of scientific data,it should be done by organisation with scientific experts.otherwise it will lead to misinformation and might harm public health or could lead to the withdrawal of treatment otherwise beneficial to the patients.

And according to my view the patent period should also be reduced from 20 yrs to 10 yrs beacuse it is only for maximising manufacturers profit neglecting the impacts on poor. Apart from that govt. Should also come up with other programmes which can benefit manufacturer without keeping the health of poor at risk.
