1) Bad bank is a financial entity that purchases Non Performing Assets (NPAs) from banks and later restructures it and sells it off to an investor. In India, the RBI has licensed National Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd (NARCL) as the bad bank; and India Debt Resolution Company is responsible for its management and operational functions. Advantages :- - it takes the burden away from the commercial banks and thus, the latter can focus on its banking functions - it will help in maintaining the currency flow in the economy through taking deposits and giving loans in a smooth manner - leading to increase in capital formation, employment generation, raising the standards of living, etc Criticisms :- - it doesn’t necessarily root out the issue of NPAs - it sets a negative precedent to the banks and the debtors - some of significant criticisms have come from our former RBI governor, Raghuram Rajan who has stated that - Bad Bank means only shifting the burden from one entity to another; and it is the taxpayers who have to bear the brunt of it - since, 51% and 49% ownership of NARCL and IDRC respectively is with the public sector Way forward - bad bank is needed but it is only one of the measures address NPAs - there should be diverse reforms in the banking sector

2) The P5 nations - The USA, The UK, France, Russia, and China are generally regarded as the guardians of international institutions like - UN, WHO, WTO, etc However, their functioning tells otherwise which is illustrated below :- - China has made illegal claims on the lands and waters of other nations such as in the South China Sea with the south East Asian nations; the East China Sea with Japan, etc; and on international borders with India like Arunachal Pradesh, etc - Misuse of veto powers such as china in the issue of xinjiang province; Russia in the issue of Russia - Ukraine war, etc - not adhering to the decisions of ICJ - not complying with the guidelines of WTO - not giving due importance to human rights institutions like Human Rights Council - eg, as seen with The USA withdrawing from the institution during the presidentship of Donald Trump, etc Way forward :- If there is to be a rules based international order, then it is of significance that the nations that are supposed to be the guardians of international institutions should be adhering to it rather than making it weak.

On one side govt is slashing subsidy on fertilizers & on the other, they’ve just announced an increased MSP on 17 crops- This is a perfect “Barbell strategy” (quoted in Economic Survey 2021-22)

05:00 Sir, In GST council you are saying union has 1/3 rd votes and states having 2/3 votes but still centre has upper hand over states collectively, how that could be a veto power? If states opposes centre can’t go forward!
