I think you're a good teacher. Ayden is very lucky that you are not only trusting in him but, that you are teaching him great as well. I've never been a fan of external hinge but, what ever works you have to go with it. You've helped me realize that school took the creativity away from me. Before I went to tech school I used to draw and try to do really cool stuff but, after years of having to make thinkgs factory that is just what I did because that's the way it's done instead of creating new fun stuff. Thanks for that and for teaching everyone to just follow your feelings. If it works that's just the best part and if it doesn't well you learned that it needs another way !

Chad, haven't had much to say. Been following you through several builds. Top hinge needs to move up to bulge in body line (where the hinge is now) for balance look and more leverage and strength. Love your work and your girl she seems so nice and so easy on the eyes as you know. I'm a retired metal and wood worker who started my work in a custom body shop in Muncie, IN. in 1960. I have a studio shop in Freeport Florida between Panama City and Pensacola on the Gulf of Mexico where I play my days away on many projects. Going to visit you on trip to Nova Scotia hopefully this fall. I've heard it's the best time of year to visit.

In the same way that one side of the hinge will attach to the structure of the truck body, the other side must attach to the structure of the door. I'm really reluctant to comment since you are so much better able to establish what is best for designing this artful creation. But, I am concerned about the sag within the hinges and denting of the fender by the opened door. The hinges now on the truck (right side) seem to assume there will be a person holding the open door and also aiding the person entering. I wonder if it is practical to extend the lower hinge and tilt its "pin" so it aligns with the reworked top hinge pin. NOTE this above thought is intended to be considered ONLY if there is any doubt in Bad's mind.

Try the bottom hinge on the flared section - about 3" from the bottom of the door. Add a new hinge at the top and make the hinge pins line up with each other. Then they don't need to stand much above the door. If you keep the bottom hinge on the window section of the door it will need to be 4" or 5" out, or maybe 6" forward - same as the width of the flare in the body it has to clear.

I'm not a big fan of those hinges no matter how you strengthen them. If you persist in using them please move the top hinge onto the body line where the original hinge was placed. You'd never see a door in your house with only 2 hinges stuck 9 inches apart. It's not too late to reshape the bottom of the doors and have square corners. Still think your a genius and love all your work.

@Bad Chad Take a look at the front of the door cut lines on a 48 Buick. Where the body bulges out (similar to your doors) the cut line bends forward to allow the needed clearance that a straight cut does not. It will likely allow you to keep the hinges in a much cleaner looking position and not sticking several inches off of the body.

Extend your hinge pin upward 3 ft for your antenna. Also your hinge needs to be “loaded” so when it sags it sags it sags with the proper gap all around and the door closes without dragging the bottom When you bend the hinges grind a line on the front so it bends where you want the run a weld over the line to fill it and strengthen it.

Use the normal hinges. Allow the bottom of the door to rotate INTO THE FENDER like scooping out icecream from the container. When you close it the bottom of the door returns to its proper alignment. Sit down in a chair in front of the door and visualize where that front edge of the lower door wants to go, see it swinging in? Then let it. You will meed to build in a stop so that the door cannot open more than about 80 degrees or it will hit the lip of the front fender.
