Paul, you very modestly omitted to mention that apart from an internet connection, a powerful PC setup, your home organ, Hauptwerk mp3 files, the headphones, and a mouse and keyboard, achieving "the whole magic" also requires you as the extraordinarily gifted, dextrous and fleet of foot operator to select and depress the correct organ keys at the appropriate time and in the right sequence to produce a sound that captivates your listeners.

I am now 75 years old. When I was 11 and my grandmother was 75, she taught me that hymn, Großer Gott Wir Loben Dich, in German as best she could remember. Her parents came from Hesse Daemstadt. She sang while I picked it out on the piano. I would love it if you could sent me your harmonization of that hymn! I have an organ in my home.

I got a chuckle from this post for it's about 3 decades in coming. We got our first Yamaha during the late 80s around the time the DX-7 burst into view, we could not afford a DX then, we purchased an analog midi equipped version. No magazines to teach one, teachers were practically non-existant for midi in those days, it took over ten years to learn even the basics then. I don't have to remind folks now how handy the internet is. Now I'm trying to absorb the USB portion of it. Thanx

These Hauptwerk set-ups, where you can emulate some of the greatest church organs in your own home, must be a game changer for organists in all leagues all over the world, and also for the listeners, who will have access to such a rich variety of performances from any device with intenet connection at no cost. And by the way, I think I understand how the compositions are built up much better, by seeing the hands and feet of the organist, instead of just listening to a record.

How do you do it: you listen to the music through headphones. At the same time, a camera is filming, which apparently also picks up the sound, so that I can now see and hear it on KZbin, perfectly synchronized.

Paul a quick question for you >>>> Can you assign the voices to different channels or does it split the families to different speakers i.e. reeds in one channel, flutes another.... or can you establish pedal division, swell division etc to certain speakers.... Thanks... Doc.
@PaulFey5 ай бұрын
I think you can! Don't ask me how, but I think I heard that being done somewhere. There are probably extensive audio settings and options in the stop voicing-module as well! 😀
@essayemyoung40095 ай бұрын
It looks like you have to buy Hauptwerk advanced to do more than stereo output and per-pipe voicing. However, in GrandOrgue you can output to multiple audio output channels and assign each rank to an arbitrary output channel.

@soundofmysoul48975 ай бұрын
You can easily assign as many manuals as you want to each keyboard. You can also play all manuals from just one keyboard. Simply start the configuration for each manual and select the first and last key of the desired keyboard. Hauptwerk doesn't care if it's always the same keyboard.

Thank you! Do you need an extra MIDI cable (actually "interface") to do MIDI sequencing on this setup, or can everything go through just one? Your desktop is awfully crowded. This has caused known problems on my puters several times. My experts warned of this, I didn't believe it, but cleaning up and consolidating the desktop sure enough fixed them.

I wanted to ask you about reverb actually, - you basically tend to buy dry samples and then you turn on some hauptwerk reverb feature or you just buy wet samples and thats it? (I was thinking about buing dry samples and than using some awesome tool like Strymon Big Sky)
@essayemyoung40095 ай бұрын
I think it depends. Some people really want to hear the original room response of the space where the organ is recorded, and for that wetter samples are better. I personally like drier samples because I want the flexibility of choosing my reverb parameters. There’s also often a mismatch between the way organ sample sets and live recordings sound because samplers will record the pipes in full stereo close to the organ, but with full reverb tails. On most live recordings I’ve heard the stereo microphones will be placed farther back from the pipecase, so I’ve come to associate long reverb tails with a dry signal that has less side content. With a dry sample set, you can fix this problem by varying both the mid/side balance and reverb send of each division (or even each rank if you want) independently. That way you can have a dorsal positiv division whose pipes don’t sound like they’re right next to the Great or Swell pipes. Newer samplesets (e.g., paid samplesets of Piotr Grabowski) offer more of a compromise with front/dry/rear/etc. recordings of each rank.

@essayemyoung40095 ай бұрын
I believe it’s the same DIN-5 connector that used to be used for mouse and keyboard peripherals. With all the time and consensus it takes to gain widespread use of a new display or USB connector type, I’m not surprised that MIDI just piggybacked on USB like so many other things did.
