The first flowering of classical civilization in Tamizh country finds expression in the poetry and songs of the Sangam Age, which is commonly held to be between the second century BCE and second century CE. After this period, a strange dynasty of mysterious rulers are said to have come from somewhere and deposed the traditional 3 Kings - Chera, Chozha, Pandya - and ruled Tamizhagam for centuries.
During this period, they neither gave any grants, constructed no lasting monuments, no poets sang of them. This is the 'Dark Age', a period of mystery when the curtain of hidden history is said to have been drawn upon the Tamizh country. When the curtain lifts, in the early 5th century CE, the Pandya and Pallava kings left inscriptions claiming to have subdued this dynasty. From here onwards, the Kalabhras just disappear from historical, as mysteriously as they arose.
In this podcast, we invite Shri T S Krishnan, historian and Tamizh scholar, to shed light on this mysterious people and find out if they are really as much of an enigma as is popularly assumed.

Excellant information about kalabras sir. thanks. kalabras' ancestral god is thirumaal called mahaavishnu, srikrishna. acchutha (அச்சுதன்) Is the another name of Lord thirumaal. since kalabraas are kalvar vamsam, they worshipped their ancestor i.e, thirumaal. one of the sangam literature.. kaliththogai mensions about ' Thirumaal' as "முல்லைத் தினையின் தலைவன், (திரு) 'மால்' எனும் 'மாயோன்', கள்வன். கையில் வளரியை (chakra) ஆயுதமாகக் கொண்டவன். கரிய நிறத்தவன். Hence, Kalabras, in the initial period of their kingdom, the royals named themselves as Acchutha and worshipped Lord Thirumaal/Srikrishna/mahaavishnu. Kalabras defeated the three kings.. i.e., chera, sozha, paandyas put them into prison ( kalabras did not kill any of the three tamil rayal kings..chera, chozha, pandiya) and asked the three kings to praise the kalabra king who defeated them. two of the thamil kings mrs is.. as they were not hand cuffed. one king praised the kalabra king with double meaning, one of which was indirectly degrading the kalabra king. hence, he was hand cuffed and put into prison and the other two kings were not handcuffed but put into prison. this shows their magnanimity. As regards the other 7 velirs, one.... the kodumbalur be put also belongs to kalvar vamsam as mentioned be the great Historian Nilakanda saasthrigal, in his Colas, and the great Mahadevan also mentioned Kodumbalur velir as kalvar in his kodumbalur velir varalaru(history). Sangam poet kabilar says that kodumbalur velir royal Irungovel as 49th decesdent of Lord Krishna, who ruled thuvaragapuri. Also, sundaramurthy nayanar, Sekkizhaar, nambiyaandaar nambi have mentioned that kodumbalur velirs are the ancestor of cholas. Also, historical records says that kodumbalur velirs are the ancestor of hoisalas, chalukkiyas.

@@keshavkk479 Kannada as a language originated circa 350ad and the first proof emerges in the Halmidi inscriptions 442ad. The Kanarese language is wholly a late Kadamba enterprise to begin with. So it's not fair to call Kalabhras as 'Kannadiga' but you can call them as proto dravida stock or proto Tamil cohorts coming from the present Andhra region.

@@srebalanandasivam9563 kannada script and words found even in Ashoka inscriptions, oldest full fledged inscriptions of solely kannada found in 350ad, doesn't it mean people invented script then invented language for it..fool. Telugu inscriptions are even later then this. Elevated land north to konga region untill godavari were kannada. And your proto Tamil and Telugu never existed around there. Even Roman plays acted in alexandria called by name 'Charition mime' has kannada dialogues. Sanskrit developed is script very late after rigveda, does it mean Sanskrit never existed before? You fool. Your airavata mahadevan stated''Kannada personal names and place names in the early Prakrit inscriptions on stone and copper in Upper South India [...] Kannada was spoken by relatively large and well-settled populations, living in well-organised states ruled by able dynasties like the Satavahanas, with a high degree of civilisation [...] There is, therefore, no reason to believe that these languages had less rich or less expressive oral traditions than Tamil had towards the end of its pre-literate period." And also The Greek geographer Ptolemy (150 AD) mentions places such as Badiamaioi (Badami), Inde (Indi), Kalligeris (Kalkeri), Modogoulla (Mudagal), Petrigala (Pattadakal), Hippokoura (Huvina Hipparagi), Nagarouris (Nagur), Tabaso (Tavasi), Tiripangalida (Gadahinglai), Soubouttou or Sabatha (Savadi), Banaouase (Banavasi), Thogorum (Tagara), Biathana (Paithan), Sirimalaga (Malkhed), Aloe (Ellapur) and Pasage (Palasige).[44] He mentions a Satavahana king Sire Polemaios, who is identified with Sri Pulumayi (or Pulumavi), whose name is derived from the Kannada word for Puli, meaning tiger. Some scholars indicate that the name Pulumayi is actually Kannada's 'Puli Maiyi' or 'One with the body of a tiger' indicating native Kannada origin for the Satavahanas.[45] Pai identifies all the 10 cities mentioned by Ptolemy (100-170 AD) as lying between the river Benda (or Binda) or Bhima river in the north and Banaouasei (Banavasi) in the south, viz. Nagarouris (Nagur), Tabaso (Tavasi), Inde (Indi), Tiripangalida (Gadhinglaj), Hippokoura (Huvina Hipparagi), Soubouttou (Savadi), Sirimalaga (Malkhed), Kalligeris (Kalkeri), Modogoulla (Mudgal) and Petirgala (Pattadakal), as being located in Northern Karnataka which signify the existence of Kannada place names (and the language and culture) in the southern Kuntala region during the reign of Vasishtiputra Pulumayi (c. 85-125 AD, i.e., late 1st century - early 2nd century AD) who was ruling from Paithan in the north and his son, prince Vilivaya-kura or Pulumayi Kumara was ruling from Huvina Hipparagi in present Karnataka in the south.[46] An early ancestor of Kannada (or a related language) may have been spoken by Indian traders in Roman-era Egypt and it may account for the Indian-language passages in the ancient Greek play known as the Charition mime.[47]

Then why themselves recognise themselves as karnatakas? It actually makes sense. After raise of mayuravarm's kadamba rose to power, who were Jain's basically shot one-off shoot from Hassan's shravana belagola to Tamil reagion, im not saying chera, chola and pandyas were weak then but those kannada raiders were strong then these rulers. Then started to implement their culture and later in Tamil too. So it is not bad to accept history and it's truth

The descendants of Kalabhras are Tamil vellalars today. The kalabhras may have migrated to western india from Middle-east/Southern europe prior to the Aryan migration and if you review the Haplogroup J-M172 which is high in tamil vellalars over any other group in India.
