SMSreborn is out! • SMS Reborn [update v3....
I never do videos or presentations with voice, so I figured this would be good practice!
Super Mystic Sonic! You'd expect it to have been so negligible, yet it's impact on the Sonic Robo Blast 2 community still has fallout from SMS lingering over them to this day. What did the community think of it? What was going through MY head? Why did it ever so get so much notoriety? Can I be a Super Mystic character too?

I remember being so hyped for SMS Unleashed back in the day. I admit, when I found out back then that the SMS Unleashed exe file worked with vanilla servers, I actually laughed. It was just hilarious to me that the devs didn't think to safeguard netgames against exe files until it was too late, especially since the concept of an exe mod wasn't exactly anything new.

Damn, this was amazing. Back when sms was still a thing I was in elementary school, so I had no idea of any of the drama that surrounded the character. I just thought the wad was cool and used it in every instance I could. It’s great to see you’ve reborn the character into what you’ve always wanted it to be, definitely gonna check it out. You know, during these hard times, it is fun to see things like these pop up in my youtube recommendations that just make me smile and laugh. I got into SRB2 during the start of the Final Demo 1.09.4 back in like... May of 2007, I remember the day clearly when the eight year old me and my older brother found the game online from youtube videos, and then proceeded to download and play it for the entire summer. Srb2 is something really near and dear to my heart, and so is SMS, since it was my very first wad I ever downloaded. Now the 22 year old me is about to download the new SMS and enjoy it first time after so many years, good job on the informative and hilarious video. Stay healthy!

When I’ve first heard about SMS was in 09.4. I was in 5th grade. I’m now soon to be a married man. SRB2 was all my childhood but SMS is what really stuck out for me. When I’ve heard about 2.2 a few months ago I screamed like a kid, and was even more excited when you released SMS. So I just wanted to say thanks for a great childhood :)

Let me just say this right now SMS has been my favorite srb2 character ever since I’ve heard of him I’ve even went as far as to recreate him in another sonic fan game Sonic World and while it’s just a texture swap of other modded characters it’s still a decent mod either way it’s just awesome to have him back infact now that I’ve seen this I’m gonna get back to playing srb2 so Thank you for making this character this was a blast

SMS was the pinnacle of my early days of SRB2. I never knew there was so much drama that was surrounding him at the time. I used to even be a part of SMS Events at the time, though under a different name (I think it was "HeroSteve6070?") but left when I thought it had died out on Skype. It's been a long time coming, and with 2.2 servers being dominated by Dirk and (my own bias) Fang, it's about time the king of 1.09.4 came home. Thank you very much and happy birthday.

I just started to look at SRB2 stuff for the first time since i was 9 years old. I first heard of SMS when i was around 10/11, and now im about to finish my university degree. It was easily my favourite sonic robo blast mod, and SMS Unleashed was a blast to use. I cant believe youre still updating it to this day. Im definitely going to download the newest version just to re live my childhood I remember seeing this mod everywhere on SRB2 servers. I even used him on a bunch of them (back then my alias was Doom or D00M) on some custom maps. It was amazing. I miss that sense of community on the online servers, but these days they arent that active which is a shame.

What was cool about classic srb2 is that people would bring their sonic oc into srb2 and for some reason it felt special seeing these characters in a online game. Unfortunately there are less sonic ocs i see in online srb2 servers and the only sonic ocs i see in srb2 multiplayer server are dirk and some other ocs made by the same person. hopefully we will get Nitemare and Senku remade for srb2 one day.

People just follow suit with SEGA's methods a lot lately. It's all about the Classic trio and basic gameplay. Anything extra's fallen to the sideline. It's a shame. I just can't see a franchise like Sonic going anywhere with that kind of non-progressive attitude.

Holy, the actual creator of SMS. Man, you're a legend. Seeing SMS always brings me back to such fun moments of my childhood. Had no idea that SMS was that controversial, I for one thought it's the coolest mod ever, but not exactly the best. Not the best because he was too powerful and made the game so easy that there was no challenge in passing the levels anymore. The vanilla SRB2 maps were not made for him. Visual design wise though, definitely the best out there. I tried the 2.2 remake, and while it definitely does stand out more from other Sonic mods, it doesn't quite hit the same for me. It feels like feedback pushed you into redesigning him, but I personally dug the original design way more. It was simpler and less clustered with details. Beauty in simplicity. Also sad to see that you removed the animation where he's running and gripping the ground with his palm to control his excessive speed. It was one of the most badass things ever. Overall props to you for shaking an entire community with this one mod. You gave all of us a really great time back then.

In my opinion, your initial 2.1 sprite was fine. He's a Sonic superform. Just because he still looks like Sonic, doesn't mean the sprite is automatically bad. You mentioned multiple times that he *was* indeed a superform. And since you were using LUA to allow Sonic to transform, it would be actually better to use that sprite as it's less jarring. Although you would probably need to redo all the sprites when 2.2 came out LOL

I agree with this statement, especially as someone who plans on getting into hytale modding and PROBABLY won't be holding back on trying to make a boss fight that's as brutal as DBZ Broly while retaining originality and not directly being based on dragon ball. I could get mocked, hated, probably even ridiculed for making a tough boss (as I don't know how the hell to script and because of that making it scale will be difficult) But this modder right here, GoldenShine probably will be some inspiration for me moving forward. Who knows maybe I'll sneak in a small reference to SMS.

I think that was an old OpenGL only feature in SRB2 1.09.4, coronas. (No, not that one.) I think it was removed in SRB2 2.0.

Bless, this is such a good blast from the past. Thanks for this wild SMS documentary. Even as someone who was one of the first submissions judges, I thought removing all the fun character customization options in 2.0 was a bad idea and I stuck to being annoyed about that the whole time. Very interesting listen as I remember playing SMS back in the final demo days, and I recognized far too many of the levels in the final demo footage used phew.

sadly so, it's like with animation people bash it if you use flash rigs to speed up the process, or traditional artists bashing people for using references to double check anatomy, posing or scenery. it's just so annoying that a medium of creative expression turns into a pissing contest of who can still perform under limited conditions as if they're all doing nuzlocks.

They're not technically lights. SRB2's software mode wouldn't support that. They're fullbright slightly transparent sprites. SRB2 has a default sprite for this called SPR_OILF that SMS uses for the main glow. For the ground, I use floorsprites (Sprites tilted 90 degrees) that change size/translucency depending on SMS' distance to it.

If i remember correctly they used to have it set where a lot more items gave off ambient lighting, a similar effect is seen in doom source ports like zandronum and gzdoom. But i think after 2.0 they toned it down
