In grad school I purchased a Jaguar and a Lynx from another student. For the Jaguar, I literally bought it for the two games Aliens vs Predator and Tempest 2000 - those two games alone kept me from getting my master's degree! And for the Lynx, I played Klax into the ground Thanks for covering, Patmann!! You da man!! Boom Shaka Laka!!

I have one, and the best word I can describe it as “WASTED POTENTIAL”. It could have been great and while there are some diamonds in the rough, I can see why it didn’t appeal to you. Anedotally, I streamed a grabbag of games with my girlfriend earlier this month as “Jaguar-y” (playing Atari Jaguar games in the month of January) and you so happened to review the system itself! What I think would have helped the system was actually NeoGeo ports-games like Magician Lord, Alpha Mission II, and even Football Frenzy (bearing in mind, these are games that are under 48 megabits-the most a Jag cartridge can muster) would have gone a long way!

I remember this being on display with Aliens vs Predator on my college campus back in '94 and being really impressed. What a shame that one game wasn't representative of what the whole library would be like.

That commercial is on my top 10 Video Game Commercials of all time! DO THE MATH!!! Never owned one, but had an uncle who was huge into Atari & had this at his house! Played a lot of Aliens vs Predator on that game! i remember waiting for a comic book shop to open in 1989 for the 1st ever comic of Alien VS Predator! Then to have a Video Game come out in 1994 was epic! Perfect timing too because 1st person shooters was just becoming a thing back then!

Patman, thanks for covvering the Jaguar. Lots of great details with your personal style on the history of the Jaguar Atari. I still remember walking into Suncoast Vidoe back then, and thinking the Jaguar had a big hill to climb to succeed. The controller with all the buttons on it looked overwhelming! Then they had the templates for each game.

There is so much that we can use categories: 3d . There is an abandoned voxel space RPG . There are some 3d demos, but sadly most flat shaded. 2d RPG , Hack n shlash, jump n run , and a shooter which came a little too late during the commercial life will be finished. Is battlesphere any fun? I would love some story based space shooter with 3d cut scenes. Then use this 96k Demo technology to compress it on a cartridge like it is 1993!

I got mine brand new for $39.99 from KB Toys in 95 or 96, I think by the time I got it most of the games were gone at the stores. In the Early to mid 00's I would always check game shops for Jaguar games because they would always have them for cheap and include boxes, so I think it was $10 a piece for Doom/Wolfenstein and $15 for AVP.

I remember being pretty excited for the Jaguar after reading about it in EGM and other magazines. However, shortly after the Jag was released I was able to play it and Cybermorph at an independent video game shop that was open for a couple of years in the strip mall behind the Northwest Bank tower at Northpark Mall in Davenport, IA. There's a UPS Store in that location now. After playing Cybermorph I was seriously less than impressed to say the least! "Where did you learn to fly" indeed! At home I could play a mean game of Doom and other 2.5D games on my lowly 486 PC but the "64 bit" Jaguar's pack in game looked like something that was developed for a 386 PC in 1990. Later on after Tempest 2000 was released and was getting good press I went back to that game store and tried it out. It was actually fun but was far from a system seller. It was no doubt to hear that developers on the Jag had so many issues with the hardware. Since Atari didn't develop the console in house they couldn't do much to provide developer support beyond provide the information they got from Flare. I would bet that Flare wasn't too keen on going above and beyond to help since Atari at that point was infamous for not paying their bills on time or changing contract terms to give developers the shaft.

I know exactly which door you're talking about (the UPS store) but don't recall a videogame store being there. Since I lived in green rock Illinois at the time I didn't get the Northpark very often especially in the mid-90s. Thank you fellow Quad citizen for sharing

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries The store was only there from around late 93 until sometime in 96. When the N64 was finally released in the fall of 96 my friends and I wanted to check it out in a store. We found that game store had closed. Luckily, the nearby Toys R Us that was at Brady St. & Kimberly Rd. had a N64 kiosk setup in the store. Shortly after that my friend group pooled our money together to purchase a group N64. We had maintained a group SNES for a few years prior to that. Some of the guys had gotten tired of always having to come over to my parents house after school in order to play SNES games as I had owned one since it's initial release. So in early 94 a travelling group SNES was purchased. It, the controllers and all the games purchased for it travelled from one friend's house to another one in a big duffel bag. The group SNES & N64 were maintained until most of the friend group went off to the U of I or other colleges in the fall of 98. After that most of the group continued to get together for LAN parties a few times a year well into the 2000s. :)

This was flares chance for 10 minutes of fame . Just it seems like they could not employ or train supporters on that money. It takes years to understand the hardware. Atari did not want to pay the devs extra for the steep learning. Atari enthusiasm. I Stil Claim that a simpler hardware would have been most effective here. Jack Tramiel being secretive here did not help . Did Motorola put an NDA on him? 3do was already out and more advanced. SH2 was out, just 32x not yet.

It was 64 bit, not because 32 x 2 for tomorrow and jerry but because of components in one of those chips and the data bus. The problem was hardware defects and lack of dev tools and documentation. PS was much easier to develop on.

One of my buddies bought a Jaguar at the time and swore by it, and every-time me and another friend would come over, we would rag on it. I've been gaming since the late 70's, so I've seen the best and the worst of gaming, and while the Jaguar wasn't the worst, it was far away from being anywhere near the best. Just a really squandered opportunity, as it had some decent ideas, but beyond poor execution, and no idea what the market needed or wanted at the time(claiming 64-bits in commercials was never going to translate to actual sells). All that being said, I'll sing the praises of Tempest 2000 until my dying breath, that games is F' ing AMAZING.

18:00 that's no rumor. That's absolutely true. Kay-Bee Toys is where I ultimately picked up my Jaguar back in the late spring of 1997 for the sum total of $50. I returned for several weeks thereafter and picked up a bunch of additional titles for right around the $5 mark until the stock was finally gone (Tempest 2000, Iron Soldier, and Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure among them). I'm not sure if the stock was completely sold out or just sent to a landfill and written off.

I remember being one of the first who called out the developers on the Colecovision Chameleon when i saw the board used. They virtually stole people's money. I don't know what happened to them in court, but I do remember there was a big case involving them with stealing money from the crowdfund instead of giving it all back. They failed to realize there are nerds out there who know even the boards used for consoles and arcade cabinets.

I grabbed a Jaguar on clearance for like $25 at a Kaybee Toys around 1997. I found another unit at a garage sale a few years later with the CD unit and about 25 games or so for $30. I gave the extra console and duplicate games to my brother and kept the rest. Because of that, we were able to JagLink and play Doom. It's fun, and works decently for death matches, but crashes constantly in co-op. We played a lot of Brutal Sports Football around that time, and I've always preferred its Doom and Wolfenstein, and only a Philistine could hate Tempest 2000. Today, it's still my 10 year old son's favorite way to play NBA Jam TE together (yes, we set up a team tap to play 4 player... but never White Men Can't Jump. We tried- it was awful). I rarely play the CD games, though I do have all of the exclusives for it, and it does work still. Fun retrospective. Thanks for not dwelling on the 64 bit or not debate- it never really mattered. When you look at what came out on SNES and Genesis in 1994, the premium stuff like the Neo Geo AES and 3DO, and the PS1 and Saturn being around the corner, it never really was going to make a difference either way.

About 7 years later I was in college, had a dreamcast and Xbox, so I sold my Jaguar collection for next to nothing to a Slackers store...its the most ive ever felt ripped off with the prices I could get a few years later, lol. Wish I still had it.

My spoiled friend had a Jaguar on day one. His dad came home from Babbage's after work that day, and dropped it in our laps. I helped him get it connected to the TV in place of the SNES, and we played Cybermorph all day, every day for a couple weeks. After that, we just... turned it off...

With the 64-Bit moniker, it was also due to the fact that it had a 64-bit data bus. It's a shame that it was so hard to develop for as many companies ended up strictly using the 68000, which was originally intended to only be used as a support chip Tom and Jerry.

And with strictly you mean AI and physics. Though I never understood how and why a game converts game objects (as in Unity3d) to display objects stripped of all information unnecessary for display. Amiga had the copper to queue a command list to the blitter. So why not use the GPU here? Perhaps the blitter is too fast ?

What does the Panther offer over genesis / SNES ? I don't see how it would attract more developers. I mean, I never understood how SuperFx could get successful, while PCs and Mac could play those kind of games even before and better. So there was a novelty market for 3d.

@ArneChristianRosenfeldt easier to program for than the Jaguar would probably be the biggest selling point . It sounds like it would have been a hell of a pixel based system,at a solid price point. The Jaguar just wasn't really ready and it showed.

@ the 2d part of Jaguar is the Panther. It is colorful, but only can do a few sprites. It is so bad that I wonder if Tramiel did not want to pay Texas Instruments for patents? JRISC should manage the sprites using its scratchpad. Then the software devs would violate any patents. Never heard that C64 games were sued for sprite multiplexing . The complicated stuff is already on Panther: you need a special converter for the color format. Also: no translucency like the fog on genesis. Not compatible like the NeoGeo.

I appreciated the Saturn and PlayStation (which I also owned) so much more because of the others, BUT overall, Outside of 10-12 games maybe I would revisit, This whole era should R.I.P. #NEVERGETTINGTHATMONEYBACK having said that, the Jag has some genuine great games. I still play the Jag version of Doom and Tempest. (In case you were wondering, I skipped the N64 because of all that Failing I did with these consoles) ((cue debbie downer music))

I think most consoles come down to the games, are there enough third party developers making games for your system? The Master system is a good example, it's superior to the NES , but it didn't have Konami, Capcom, sunsoft and others pumping out dozens of games a year. Thanks for the video Patman!

Jack Tramiel only purchased the home console and computer division of Atari. As a result, the arcade division created Tengen to publish games for the home market for trademark reasons. I like the Jaguar, but it really didn't have much third-party support. The 2D games it did get looked great (usually), reminding me of the Amiga. If it did get the third-party support, it really could've competed against the Genesis, SNES, and TurboGrafx (possibly also the 3DO). The 3D games usually weren't that great, though, so it could only really hold its ground against the 32X as the PlayStation, Saturn, and Nintendo 64 blow it out of the water.

Imagine releasing a CD add on for a console that already did not sell too well. Who should buy it? And who should develop games for a peripheral that nobody owns? Who approved the design for this controller? Also the false advertisement with the 64 bit.. when there still were some loyal Atari Fans, after Jaguar there likely were none left...

The Panther has nothing over SNES. Raiden was written for Panther. The SNES version is better. SNES has a top notch audio chip from Sony. I don’t see how Panther can make a difference. Ensoniq seem to be stuck in the past.

Typically with a console game, you’re supposed to pick it up, turn it on, and be able to at least get started on the game quickly learning the objectives. Operating the controller shouldn’t rely on looking at it and using a cardboard overlay to play games like Doom. The 3 button configuration was a leap backwards into 1989 with the Sega Mega Drive. Atari had no mascot. The 2600 unofficial mascot could’ve been pac man. Releasing the pro controller should’ve been packed in from day one. Then the whole console gets confusing when there’s a CD add on . The messaging would’ve been very confusing to parents. Nintendos 8- bit success came from its relaunch into the US market as a toy packed in with Duck hunt, light gun and the robot. Simply paying extra doesn’t add up to consumers when they need an explanation how to even begin playing a game.
