This was fascinating! I'm currently wading through pages and pages of early 19th century women's magazines, which are just so wild. My favourites are the melodramatic stories that are dressed up as "letters to the editor" and "true accounts" - so much fun. I wish that aspect had been a bigger plot point in Bridgerton - the mystery of Lady Whistledown was one of the few things that kept me watching through all episodes. Do you have recommendations for books (academic or not) about print culture and/or coffee houses? The Hannah Greig book has gone straight onto my wishlist.

This was very informative. The regency genre is one of my favorites, and to know that stories like Bridgerton has a very interesting story behind it, it makes it even better ☺️

Hello please do more 18th century nerd videos it’s so hard to talk to people about that century without getting ‘oh is that like Jane Austen’ and then spending half an hour explaining Jane Austen’s relationship with the 18th century, her influences, her qualms etc actually that would be a good video looking at how Austen was influenced but then that’s also a thesis idea isn’t it could easily write a lot about that lol

Claire, I absolutely loved this brilliant discussion. Do you have any books you’d recommend to read more about this? Also! We had a professor in undergrad teach a class all about coffeehouse culture which I unfortunately could not take but the course aimed to emulate some of that through coffee tastings and chocolate tastings and outings which is a fantastic way to teach that. Thank you for your hard work with this video. I’d love to see more of these.

Such a rich history for the folks on other side of the ocean. Very informational I don't know much about about the eightieth century in England.

I loved this video! Really want to find The Beau Monde after seeing it on your Instagram and you talking about it here! I know hardly anything about the 18th century (apart from its engagement with ancient Greece and Rome, in my classics degree I did a module on the use of classics through history which was fascinating) but its definitely an era I want to learn more about

Brilliant video, Claire! I love hearing about the 18th century (I tend to read 19th and 20th century classics, so I’m less familiar with all this!). Would love more videos dealing with 18th century culture/18th century literature ❤️

I would love to see more videos about the eighteenth century! I loved your thoughts on print culture and Bridgerton. Have you heard of Frances Brooke's The Old Maid and Charlotte Lennox's The Lady's Museum? They're two mid-eighteenth-century periodicals by female writers that quite explicitly write back to the traditional "coffee-house" periodical tradition. They're also quite gossipy in tone and reflect on the role of women in print culture/periodical writing. I often had to think about them when watching Bridgerton and I think you might also find them interesting!

Yes!! I actually cut out a section on Charlotte Lennox as the video was way too long ahaha. Lennox is one of my favourite writers of the period along with Eliza Haywood.

Yes, I'd say the tweak of changing the content from political and philosophical debate among men to scandal among women...reflects what our current educated/elite choose to focus on today...
