Laurel Hill Cemetery is America's second-oldest rural cemetery.
It was established in 1836 by John Jay Smith when he was unable to find a respectable resting place in the city for his daughter.
Philadelphia and other cities were running out of space to bury their dead, creating the rural cemetery movement.
Three and a half miles outside the city, the cemetery became a destination hotspot. In a time before parks, it was a place where you could see art and nature in one place.
It's popularity increased when celebrities of the time were being reinterred to Laurel Hill.
Watch the rise and fall of Laurel Hill Cemetery and how it became a destination once again.

This is a beautiful place. I've seen countless videos of cemeteries but I don't remember ever hearing about this one. Kudos to all of you who are keeping it looking so well cared for.

Walking through it is stunning. It has some of the absolutely best views of Philadelphia.

@rosiemcnaughton9933 fun fact ...we were on a haunted tour , I got bored and started asking real questions....it's at LEAST $90,000, to get a regular plot there...what I learned? I'm poor and it's looking like mt.mariah in Philadelphia (abandoned since 2004) We go there frequently! Look it up it's awesome

The Bonaventure graveyard in Savannah, Georgia is far older than this graveyard in Philadelphia. The first person to be buried in the Bonaventure was buried in 1803.
