I feel like another important thing to bring up is Undertale Yellow, which was pretty much like a defibrillator for thousands of undertale fans (me included). Because of it, there's been like a trillion undertale soul color fangames announced, and considering how long development takes (and that people don't abandon the projects), I think the fandom will have plenty of good things to bring for a while also btw i cannot wait to find out what madness' deal is. love his design!

Agreed. I was a very passive fan for years until UTY, then I found really well done fanfic (“Falling out of Trouble”, I think?) and got pulled back in full force. Now I’m writing an AU of my own through Ao3 that I’m stupid proud of, I’ve put so much thought into how the word would function culture and politics-wise, and the fact that the one-shot I posted has about 300 hits (which I’m assuming means ‘people who clicked on this’) in the past two months makes me smile. I honestly thought it would be swept up into the void and no one would see it.

Here here! I got dragged back into Undertale full force by an amazing UTY fanfic, and now here I am at my desk, planing and posting my own AU. The community has it’s faults, but literally every community does, there is no escape. An example is the Splatoon community: according to the plaza posts, there seems to be a debate going on creating posts on religion and LGBT themes and “why can’t I talk about my faith if you can talk about your orientation?” Some people are trying to calm the fire through the plaza posts to, but the whole thing is a mess. But my point is no one is perfect, we just have to try and be good.

Agreed. Although its toxicity and overwhelming negativity can be overstimulating at times, especially if you find yourself in the middle of it or, worse, it being directed at you; it's still a nonetheless wonderful, creative and loving community of people if you know where to look! Besides, every fandom has its toxic side, no matter how big or small it may be. Because of that, I try not to let it affect me or whine about it since it's unfortunately inevitable.

That comment about what's left of Glitchtale's mantel had me in pieces on the floor. You're pretty funny and I can definitely see your channel going places! This was a really solid video summarizing the general insanity this fandom has generated. Only thing I'd like to bring up is the parts of my original Flowerfell video I got wrong (you can see it in the screenshot too I'm begging people to read the pinned comment) The Flowerfell blog and creator (Sanei) was very much a Frans shipper but the person who wrote the actual story that's canon for the AU was a Chans (Chara and Sans) shipper so they deliberately made the relationship platonic. It's a difficult situation of the original creator and the storyline mismatching. The creator's friends attribute the shutting down of the AU to harassment but more specifically to the fiction kins. While obviously I find the Frans distasteful, harassing someone to leaving isn't going to change their mind it's just gonna make them cling to it harder. It's a pretty apt demonstration of how toxic this hellhole we inhabit is at the end of the day. Keep up the work I can't wait to see what you upload next.

Actually, when we roleplayed on Discord at the time, we had our own version of Godverse. However, the super strong powerscaling got super annoying and kind of soured our fun in just making stories. We still left on okay terms and I think he’s still friends with the creator of Godverse but I’m much happier just making fun stories without thinking too hard about how powerful my characters should be. I’ve always been that way with stories.

There is a SoundCloud tournament themed around doawk which isn’t a au of undertale but it is related to undertale called diary of a tourney kid that included gaster as the villian of the tournament, he also turns the losers who lost into goners and once the goners lose again, they are eliminated and resurrected as gaster’s followers, the tournament is currently on gr3 since gr2 ended with a announcement of some rewrites of the story. It started out as a joke and spoof tourney until the story went darker to lr2-gr1

Thank you for making this video 💖 I have never watched your videos before but this is one of the most special most dedicated videos I have ever seen. I’m going to say as someone who got into the fandom around the time it was dying which was around 2019 and then was glad it spiked back up during the pandemic I have had my fair share of seeing both sides of the fandom and I myself have also grown over the years to be better as someone who realized they were on the toxic side of the fandom. I keep to myself but always enjoy seeing be aus and animations that come my way and always make sure to tell them how great they are doing! A lot of the creators are so talented and it’s amazing how much effort this fandom has put in.

Undertale has always been an inspiration for me,i've created a few concepts for alternate universes which I still have the notes for somewhere in my google docs There was undertale pollinated which started out as a version of dusttale where Flowey/Asriel was the killer instead of Sans,which became a story about a tokusentai of characters who survived Flowriel's genocide run that are now empowered by the human souls now having to deal with the possibility of a human enacting a genocide run. Then there was "something's not right" which was a horror AU that started as with the premise of Toriel going missing after the player resets from a neutral run,the human sets out on a quest to find her only to uncover something deeply disturbing,this one eventually sprialed into a story about soul replication and using magic to create life. Undertale inspiration even leaks into my creative work that isn't even related to it,most commonly I find myself writing the concept of souls in a very undertale flavored way,with certain special people having souls that persist after death and some souls being made of magic,even my creature designs are very undertale/deltarune inspired,i don't think i would be in the position i am today without these little indie games about silly monsters that do the goofy thing on my computer screen,so for that reason i hope the fandom stays alive at least until i die...

I remember being really young and enraptured by all the creativity in the early fandom years and wanting to join it someday(I never did then, and thank the stars-I would’ve either been eaten alive or cringe now at my writing) but looking back I see why my mom hated it with much passion I watched stuff while she was out of the room. Gods, there was was crazy stuff. And now here I am years later, dragged back into the fandom thanks to some good fanfics and actually writing my own AU-which is TERRIFYING. I didn’t change too much about the canon setting, just added some human culture, politics, myths, and got rid of the player aspect. I got curious as to how the humans would remember and twist history about the War, basically. And that led me to making a Frisk character that could, in the right situation, go down all three paths, and I love this gremlin I’ve made. I also started the in-depth worldbuilding with them too: How do they know how to handle weapons? They were taught. Why were they taught? In case a battle comes and the civilians need to fight alongside the city’s army. Why does a city need an army in the first place? Because the countries around Ebott want their land. What makes the land so special? Because it’s very lush and a bit weird. And why is that? Because of all the magic used in the War warped the area permanently. You get the picture. And THAT eventually led to OCs, the dreaded OCs that I’m terrified are secretly awful. My main human trio are Dahlia, Dylan, and Kael, who have souls of Kindness, Bravery, and Integrity respectively. And they can be what one can refer to as Frisk’s main connections, they had the most affect on the kid’s character growing up. Dahlia is the one I’m most worried about, as she has the most screentime and knows/knew both Frisk and Clover(yes I cut an edge and made UTY canon). I’m terrified that I made her too well-rounded, too skilled, what have you. I don’t think I have-she’s lived a life of ups and downs and tries her best despite a flaw that is so in-core to her that even she has to admit was probably the reason Frisk climbed Mt. Ebott to the cave Dahlia herself showed them. I love watching the dynamic between her and Frisk, and even her and Clover, they are cute in their own ways. And I’m really scared that I’ve messed up somewhere, especially since I just started posting on Ao3(see replies, though KZbin has been acting up for my comments, so it might not be). This Photoshop Flowey one-shot is the first introduction to my world, its Souls, its Frisk & Chara, and my original characters. I’m glad it’s gotten and sort of attention(~300 hits as of now) but I’m still worried that the OCs are going to be hated, that I didn’t, for what little screentime they have, give a good impression. Hell, I worry that I yapped too much about the Souls’ histories in the end card, even though this story is about how they move forward and not their pasts, but I digress. Point is: thanks for making this video, as a wannabe creator it’s nice to see the fandom’s past and that it hasn’t died yet. Anyway, I’m done screaming into the void, goodnight everyone!

Great video, but I didn'r really understand why Error and the other guy were there? I mean, do whatever you want, but that banter kind of put me off sometimes, although the art and voice acting was nice. I used to be super big on Undertale and the fandom, but after being pissed off by a lot of aspects of it, I slowly moved onto another fandom to focus on, and I'm so glad I did. I don't regret my time in the UT fandom, I'm just happy to be able to move on from it smoothly without feeling like I lost something. You really make it sound like that sometimes.

I personally think that there’s a chance that the modern, more “whole” fangames may be able to take on a role similar to the one that the ongoing animation series had. Undertale Yellow started it, being the only one to be completed so far (to universal praise), but Ts! Underswap, Deltatraveler (in a way), Green Sans (which has been confirmed to be kind of getting overhauled into a full, legitimate game that goes beyond the memey-ness it started with), Undertale Kindred Spirits Undertale Green, and others seem to be taking the mantle of “Undertale fan content with years of passion and effort” from Underverse and that other one that also exists. So I think they could be what keeps the fandom alive and thriving. I’m excited to see where they go.

The retrospect of the fandom itself is pretty interesting to watch as someone who while loving the game never interacted with the fandom, the most fandom interaction I had back then was by watching Jacksepticeyes playthrough (which I have rewatched at least more than 20 times by now) Mischaracterization is also surprisingly common for most characters, I replayed undertale myself and ended up finding characters even more enjoyable than I thought I did cause of how they get represented in the fandom space. It's just really interesting to me at least

Just want to add on about Megalovania, as a self-certified expert with a 1700+ rows spreadsheet on the song and its variants (because autism), it got so ridiculous that people were making Megalos for the sake of it. I've seen Megalos dedicated to the most random of characters, both related and unrelated to any AUs, like Sonic EXE from the DifferenTopic AU and even Jesus Christ himself. Sometimes, the song doesn't even need to be related to a character and just exists on its own. I'm not saying that this is a bad thing. In fact, I love stuff like this. Seeing something just existing just because the creator can and wants to create it, is very motivating for someone who questions their own purpose of existence. It shows me that there's nothing wrong with just existing.

He’s just a silly guy :3 i’m pretty sure that i haven’t gain my conscious yet, but it’s 6 years ago since i joined the undertale community, and being a fanon user, i was OBSESSED with paperjam x fresh and frans, illegal ship. I didn’t know that the community had Fanon and Canon! I was just in my own world, creating stories and scenes everywhere, one time i obsessed over paperjam x fresh and some guy commented “EWWW FANON” or something like that, i asked what fanon is and he explained it, then i realized “oh freak i’m on the wrong side nobody will like me” i started reading wikis of iconic sanses as a hobby and even read their backstory (if i can find them) to understand them better! I still do ship today but i’m aware of how wrong it is, like i ship cross x dream (or cream), and i’m aware of dream and cross’s age (526 and 29) and also thats selfcest i know but they’re TECHNICALLY not the same person 😢 i get a little sad when my ship has angst (i’m not really into angst) like killer and nightmare, killer is nm’s slave and i’ve always wondered why they’re shipped with each other, i was mind blown when i learned about it, i knew that ink and error is mortal enemies but DAMN AAGSHSE THEYRE SO CUTE😭 (I’M SO SORRY) i start to become like a half canon, not fully canon because of uhh…. Shipping. But i’m happy like that! Thought I should leave a comment on this. I think the points are 1000% accurate, but I hope that the Multiverse still goes strong. I think Undertale Yellow will be the one to reignite the fandom. There's always fan-Underverse media. Being late to the fandom (2019) myself, the stories I made on A03 (HopeOfTheLorewriter) were influential to my view of the fandom as a whole (and inspired by another lesser known fanfic called HopeTale by FilledWithHope), and to how I percieve really any media nowadays. Well, yeah, that's my slice of commentary. Great video, I consider this guy the best video essayer of the AUs in general. Thanks!

I was one of the early og kids from the undertale community, I'm so glad I've grown from my experiences since when I was a child. I was unfortunately groomed by a man who used ink sans pfp to nsfw rp with my comfort character that I still like to this day despite the abuse, error sans. I'm a big fan of horror tale, project yellow and other fan games that aren't problematic but Jesus every now and again I keep forgetting just how bad the undertale community was when it first came out and how many people I've had to block because I say I'm uncomfortable with any form of: incest, pedophilia, sa, bestality(not spelled right on purpose.) And poor 15 year old me had to deal with sa threats. Don't get me wrong there's good people within the community but I have a hard time trusting people who have good art styles because they go and waste it on fetishizing abuse. Despite everything, Toby Fox is my favorite creator and I'm glad he exists and I'm chilling with deltarune now, take care 🫶

I was honestly surprised by not seeing GZtale mentioned as much, as to me that was important… but it may have just been because I was in such a niche community back in the days. I honestly don’t even know what happened to it, I was too young when I was into undertale stuff to even process in my little pea brain that GZtale may have been cancelled lmao. Because if i remember correctly, it *was* gonna be animated.. and I did like how it was written in the comic.. though I cannot re-read it fully as anything I find about the AU now-a-days is sort of deleted off the face of the internet (including the official comic im pretty sure) I’m aware it was originally in another language other than english, but i really did like the translation of it.. even if it had its hiccups. I just kind of assume now GolzyDee got bullied off the face of the internet similar to any other smaller creators at the time. Its sad to see, and I mean.. it happened back near 2019-2020 ish? I don’t know how prevalent you were in that community at the time.. but it would be awesome to talk about it in another video at some point, if you know anything else about it.. or just wanna go over it! It honestly made me jump up and down when I saw the small little Ganz clip… GZtale still remains as one of my fav aus.. even if its off the face of the internet. It sort of feels like a fever dream.. Also. I was a victim of the undertale characters react videos. I’m guilty of making 3 of them (i only really keep them up for nostalgia purposes..) and I’m fearful that since you were in that sort of niche community.. if you saw them. (Id die..) This is the first time ive seen your content though!! I definitely need to watch more of your videos, keep going dude! I'm in my nostalgia era like my hyperfixation on undertale is back and I'm happy honestly because undertale has been such a huge part of my life and this make me remember the number of roleplay I did on a game called blockstarplanet like it was such an era were I felt really good and it felt easier to watch fanmade things because I'm older now and I see things I didn't saw before and yeah.. As a newer fan, I feel like I'm doomed to be apart of a semi-dead fandom where Deltarune makes less and less fanworks come out for Undertale (not a bad thing just saddening). I personally just like the AU dynamics, deltarunes story is cool but the gameplay isn't my thing so I can't get into it like other older fans… Plus it's hard to find people who like it because it's memed beyond hell, so everyone I know thinks I'm weird and that I simp for Sans to some degree. I'm glad a lot of people are making these kinds of videos, especially for newer fans. Hopefully, we don't fade away into obscurity especially with the horror tale game coming soon.
