An interesting fact for Licca Chan is that in the mid 80s, Spanish company Feber signed up with Takara to create a Spanish version of Licca whose name was Chabel, and it was a great success with several collections, accesories and other dolls (including his boyfriend Dany, twin toddler siblings, mom and dad) until the mid 90s, when it gradually disappeared. Chabel rivalled Barbie, and as a kid during that time you usually were either "Team Barbie" or "Team Chabel".

the fact that japan wanted a dark hair doll means they should have just made a japanese looking doll for the japanese audience at the time insted of puahing western ideals and beauty cause eventually barbie had to change anyways in japan be it more of the white anime girl vibe but during thouse years in the 60s it was clear girls wanted doll ls that looked like themselfs 😭 there is a video that goes in depth ajout barbies long troubbled history in japan. also midge was having dark hhair and eyes just feeos like they didnt even try

Also Barbies 80s foray to South Korea - well, its MaBa version tho and that led to Secret Jou Jou dolls( the maba mold was used till early 2000s)

Can I say that I'm a bit disappointed that Mattel took so long to make a male asian doll not counting the Takara Ken, the first ever asian Ken doll if I'm not mistaken was released in 2010 and its not even a playline doll its a collector doll which expensive. Image if they produced a love counterpart to Kira/Miko way back in the style of 80's or 90's dolls would be adorable.

I remember reading that Barbie's cousin Francie took off in the Japanese market. She even had a particular way her face was painted. Many collectors also wish to complete their Malibu Barbie set with the Japanese Sun Sun Francie. Sun Sun Francie kept the doll's original head mold and brown hair and eyes. The Malibu Francie used her friend Casey's head mold with blonde hair and blue eyes.

I seem to recall that Francie was more popular...she was a little more demur. There were a few different facial screenings that Mattel used for the Francie dolls release on to the Japanese market. There were also outfits for both Barbie & Francie that were released exclusively to the Japanese market that reflected that market's tastes a little better. Today, they are some of the most coveted items for us vintage Barbie collectors.

Well not sure about the past, but if you go into Japanese toy stores today that have both Barbie and Licca, you can easily see why Licca beats out Barbie. Licca has tons of cute clothes and accessories. Barbie's clothes now-a-days is very not cute, and some may say, rather unstylish. Heck, half the playline dolls have molded on clothes. There's no dress up play.

China has the Kurhn dolls. Kurhn is China's first original doll brand and the dolls are like the Barbies of China. They tend to have that soft and sweet look in their faces. Some of the Kurhn dolls are based off of real Chinese figures like Yang Guifei or from Chinese legends like Chang'e. Other times, they're just unspecified girls or women wearing various traditional, cultural, and historical Chinese clothing or modern clothing like EGL.
