We wore Burberrys to school in the sixties. Our gabardine coats were terrific to fight off winter weather here in Ireland. The coats were navy with a small check navy lining and had a detachable hood. These were school coats and part of the uniform of an ordinary secondary girls school. Fond memories of my Burberry.

I am an older-generation fan. I have been a fashion fan for over five decades and your channel quickly became a favourite since your beginning. I love the deep dive into the topic of fashion and I appreciate the amount of work you put into each video. I'm only commenting now after all this time because this is one of my favourite videos you've produced. I'm retired and on a strict living budget so sadly I can't afford to join your patron. Like the closet full of high-end fashion now sold to consignment to supplement my income, the history of my “vintage” pieces has been given importantance by educational fashion channels like yours has taught the new consumer. All my Burberry flew out of the store. I did keep some jackets and a favourite well-used bag. I'm a size 52 or XL, often a size that had to be manufactured especially for me. Burberry didn't design for a fashionable man built for my favourite game rugby but they also never had a problem ordering a custom piece from their manufacturer made for my muscular frame. It would always mean a slight redesign, HEREMÈS was not as accommodating often telling me to pick another piece. In the end, if it wasn't for channels like yours teaching the relevance the importance of these pieces of iconography, my excellent ( because I loved them) condition clothing sold out in two days. Both consignment stores we begging me for what is left in my walk-in. I'm not emotionally capable of selling the rest yet. I do have some wonderful Burberry outerwear pieces left with matching accessories 👜 of course. Keep it up with your excellent work and thank you for sharing. 😊love and respect from your oldest fan in Calgary, Alberta Canada💝

I feel like Burberry is a rather difficult brand to design for. They definitely have their iconic check pattern and their trench coats, but aside from that, there isn't really any other house codes to work with 😅 Thomas Burberry wasn't really a fashion icon. It's most likely why the print overtook the brand and became oversaturated, especially with the fake market on the rise.

I own a quilted puffer down jacket by Eddie Bauer and a trench by Burberry just because they literally invented it and anything else just feels like a derivative 😊 Edit: just to correct you tho, in recessions, luxury goods suffer the lowest downturn in consumer goods. Burberry was only a premium clothing brand until the 2000's when it successfully made the jump to high-end luxury brand. I doubt there was anyone we'd know by name making the creative decisions before 1999.

@@robg2657 that’s what I thought! I found a Burberry jacket in a thrift store, searched for the tag and discovered it was from the 80’s. But I couldn’t find anyone responsible for the design, but is is a sick jacket.

Decent video but you completely neglected to discuss the huge problem Burberry created by licensing the brand in Japan. Eventually losing control of the market and cannibalizing the mainline brand. Burberry had to buy back the licenses and close all their Japanese market stores in 2015, to restore order and regain control and exclusivity of the brand.

its a good question without a definitive answer - but here is my take. when you give up equity in a company, you can't get it back unless that person sells it back to you. they saw Christopher Bailey becoming the CEO, lead director, and building equity in Burberry - so it may have created the fear that he'd someday leave Burberry, and they'd be stuck scrambling to replace him while still paying him huge amounts of money. I think generally, investors may have just been worried about the long term implications despite the fact that he was doing a great job in the moment. then again, that's all just speculation.
