The Wonders of Life was a health and fitness themed pavilion housed in Epcot Center. Since it's opening in 1989, it's impressed visitors with not only with it's size but also it's goal of trying to educate & entertain people.

It's a shame that the Wonders of Life closed down. It was a one of reasons that I became interested in biology from an early age. That interest became the driving force that pushed me to pursue a career in medicine. I had hoped to one day bring my children to Epcot and share with them the things that had such a large impact on me.

It's unfortunate that the entirety of EPCOT has seemingly moved away from learning, art, and culture. It has, of late, more focused on the money-making aspects. I understand why Disney has to do this, truly, but it used to be so different. I adored the entire atmosphere!

@@aliciahelton4246 The thing is that Disney /doesn't/ have to do it. They're a multi-billion dollar company, owners of the biggest franchises on the planet. They don't have to wring every single dollar out of their customers, but they do anyways.

@@echowoods7977 , I agree, wholeheartedly. However, supply and demand show different patterns from guest surveys. People who go into the parks (except those of us who fondly remember the old Epcot) want thrills. Disney must keep up with the Jones, it seems. I also pay attention to the newer generations of Disney fans in my Facebook groups who consistently say that Epcot is tired, bored, and dated. They rate it on the bottom of parks, unless they are really into the food, culture, and festival experience.

My only memories of this building were: getting violently sick on Body Wars, and the moment when I volunteered during a live show featuring a host and two twins who would speak alternately for every other word. They were answering questions about the human body, and, being young, and a clown, I asked "Why did the dolphin splash the whale?" They tried to answer, in which I grabbed the mic and said "He did it on porpoise" (a joke I heard on Muppet Babies), and I returned to my family among a crowd of laughing, with my siblings cheering me on, my dad mortified that I made a spectacle of myself, and my mom, who knew exactly what I was going to do, trying so hard not to laugh. Ah, good memories.

I wish this pavilion still existed when I was growing up. My Mom worked in a hospital and knows A TON about the human body. I could see her gushing teaching me a ton of facts about the body. She also LOVES thrill rides so I could see the two of us riding Body Wars together while my Dad stayed at Goofy about Health waiting for us to get off.

my one and only trip to epcot and I remember the wonders of life attractions really well ... mostly because as a 12 yr old i wanted to go on the wonder cycles... as i queued to get my chance I was asked by my mom to to look after my then 3 yr old brother at as my other brother wanted to go on body wars ride again.. i finally got to ride the cycles and within a minute of starting my ride my brother disappeared from the side of the cycle .. we lost him for over a hour the whole of the pavilion was locked down no other park guests could come in or go out.. as security searched for him they finally found him in the Goofy about health show... he had watched it three times...

Me and my dad rode Body Wars a few days before the pavilion closed. Just as the film was beginning, the shield suddenly went back up. Most likely, the other simulators were cycling through, and we were trapped. While waiting for rescue, the ride operators began piping in "A Pirate's Life For Me" to keep us entertained. Eventually, we were rescued and put in another simulator, which worked perfectly. Little did I know I was bearing witness to entire pavilion essentially being on its deathbed...

As a Californian I have to disagree with you when you say that he talks too fast, however I can understand why people from places with different dialects or people that aren't native English speakers could have troubles hearing him clearly.
@IsItModern
@IsItModern 7 жыл бұрын
I can understand him, that's not the problem. The problem is he speaks so fast that he flubs and mumbles words like "pavilion". He's not talking at "documentary speed." I promise you, if you look up any documentary, no narrators talk as fast as he does. It's jarring. It sounds like he's on a timer and if he doesn't get the words out, the bomb will go off. Just like you wouldn't have do your voiceover by shouting every word, you shouldn't have your voiceover sound like it's in a marathon. Again, Californian or not, go watch any documentary. No voiceover actor talks that fast.

IsItModern completely agree, he's talking much too fast to both look at the images and absorb the content being spoken. He also does run many words together and "flub" like you said. I'm a native English speaker from the States, so that's really not the issue here.

I'll always be sad about Wonders of Life since I feel like I essentially grew up in that pavilion (perks of having family work for Metlife. Woo sponsor lounge). I'm at least a bit happy that at least the building itself is still there and I can go in from time to time and remember all those times when I was younger. I'm most curious as to what the sponsor lounge looks like now. I know last I heard they used it for the Chase cardholder lounge during food and wine a few years back.

I just discovered your videos, and I always appreciate these; fantastic job! More on topic, I must have been one of the few who truly loved that pavilion; it was my favorite, sans Horizons. In fact, I was furious to find that I had just missed out on it's closing, as I had picked up my first annual pass to WDW just after. I didn't actually realize that it had closed, until I attended an event located in its corporate offices above, and was confused as to why it was so empty. In hindsight, I wish I'd taken more photos of the now defunct location as we left. Oh well...

They also announced in 2019 the Play pavilion which would be an interior reconstruction of the pavilion that would be a fun interactive experience for kids and construction would start a year late in 2021 because of the pandemic. However because of budget cuts in the EPCOT redevelopment program the Play pavilion would be cancelled/postponed indefinitely in a half finished state so currently the pavilion is now a mostly abandoned construction site.

Goofy About Health is a little bit more than you give credit for. Sure, it mostly showed clips from various Goofy cartoons during the 40's and 50's, especially from the Everyman Goofy/George Geef cartoons and How to/The Art of Cartoons but the show had a narrative to it: Goofy lived an unhealthy life, staying up late for too long for several nights, smoked a lot, had excess of eating and drinking alchohol etc. caused him to be stressed at work and home and eventually becomes sick and when the Doctor (an original character voiced by Kal David who also voiced Sonny Eclipse, another Disney World character) he was diagnosed with several health problem such reduced lung and liver capacity, to name a few. With some struggeling Goofy managed to quit smoking, eat and drink moderatly and starts excerizing, he ends up living a healthier and happier life.

I personally (and probably controversially) think they could turn wonders of life into an indoor wakanda lab space. It’s a relevant film, it would be right next to another marvel attraction, and the tech in the film would be really cool to see up close in a way only Disney can do. They just have to get the character from universal and they’re set.

I got to see a model of the human body ride when it was going to be an actual dark ride. It was displayed at an open house at WED (nor Walt Disney Imagineering) in 1981. The room representing the lungs moved on the model, so the who room--walls, ceiling-- would've "breathed" in and out. That model got me really excited about the Life pavilion, and I was really disappointed they changed it to a simulator ride using left-over pieces from the movie Inner Space.

I have a feeling that Inside Out is going in Wonders of Life as a new Cranium Command . It fits perfectly with the pavilions theme with health and I think that new advancements in health could be showcased. Body Wars could be updated like Star Tours and have different body destinations, the queue could also be interactive with body probe designing and a new preshow. I also think that the Disney short Inner Workings should go in the Goofy About Health or Making of Me theater. Epcot could relocate the Festival Center in the pavilion to a different space so that new attractions can be built. It's sad to see that Body Wars and Cranium Command are collecting dust by being used for festival storage. From some urban exploration videos I've seen they are starting to take down signs and doing construction inside of the queue of Body Wars. The Buzzy animatronic and theater in Cranium Command are also under construction. From the looks of it something is being planned inside the pavilion for Epcot's future.

That roast on the Ellen Ride! I hated that since it opened, mainly because of its boring Jeopardy theme. I feel that the new GOTG coaster is an awesome revamp, and brings EPCOT into the future

When I visited Epcot when I was a kid my dad asked me if I wanted to visit Body Wars and I was like "why on earth would I wanna do something educational on holiday?".

Oh, if you only knew... I don't really think Fantastic Voyage plots are educational, unless the show itself is educational (ex. Captain Planet taught about the environment, and that episode was to teach polluted water's effects on the body.)

Serious lack of vision being shown by Disney here. They just let a whole pavilion go to waste and ruin over the course of so many years. Where are the great minds (the 'imagineers') who are supposed to be coming up with new and exciting stuff to fill these parks? This pavilion was supposed to be about the wonder of the human body, biology, nature etc. There's loads of stuff you could do to base attractions/experiences around that subject. I guess these days at Disney if you don't have an IP to go with it then it doesn't happen. (People have mentioned Inside Out which I guess could work. What puts me off is I wouldn't want another ride based on animation). Regarding Body Wars, I enjoyed it when I rode it back then. Why not create a new attraction/ride based on the concept of exploring the inside of the body (like Body Wars or Adventure Thru Inner Space)? Think of all they could do using today's technology. They could even use a mix of sets, animatronics and large screens (kinda like the new Kong ride). It could be the center piece of the whole pavilion. Epcot needs some new life injected into it, but apparently all they can come up with is Guardians of the Galaxy..

What would be SUPER cool is if you made a video about some really old opening rides from the original Disneyland, like the mule ride. Nobody knows about that! Also, the Mickey Mouse Revue building where Mickey's Phillharmagic is now.

What I don't understand is... Why won't disney focus on the past rather than the future? I mean when they focused on the future... Well it didn't last long. But people like the past more. Plus it would be cool to maybe see some old animatronics that were used in the old epcot pavilions. Also maybe, they could have new pavilions representing a decade. Such as an 80s one, explaining the music, some events, most importantly the technology. Its amazing grow. technology has grown over the years. Plus maybe they can add history of disney in each decade!
