I remember some of my childhood Hot Wheels collection having openable hoods to admire the engine. This was a feature that dates all the way back to 1968, when Hot Wheels first started. The chrome engines were either exposed or had a hood that you could open to admire it, just like a real car. Only problem is that the metal pegs holding the hood to the rest of the body were rather brittle and could easily break off, eventually losing the hood entirely. Nevertheless, this feature persisted in late '90s-early 2000s Hot Wheels castings before being discontinued all together in I believe 2006-2007.

Opening goods were cut out for cost cutting. The extra part required extra tooling and metal, which cost extra money. A few cars still retain their pre-cost-cutting interiors, so when drilled apart they still have engines even if you cannot access them normally.

I love your hot wheels videos. Such a breath of fresh air in a niche dominated by hard-core collectors (yes, me included). 1:17 I have a Jet Threat 1.0 from 1970. It has a little hatch that can be opened to expose an orange turbine thingy! Its also all metal, so its ridiculously heavy. 5:00 im sure you noticed, but the Whip Creamer 2 can also be used as a makeshift kazoo/whistle. It also has a predecessor called Whip Creamer which was released in the early 70s. 6:55 yeah, the emoticar sucks. Generally just not the best design imo. 7:30 The head that sticks out the top of Skull Shaker is actually a depiction of Larry Wood, the designer of the original Bone Shaker. 10:30 carbonator is the goat of hot wheels gimmicks. They release a special one every new years so that you open definitely-not-beer with it. 20:20 in all my years of collecting, i have literally never heard of the Speed Readerz. Props for digging up this relic of hot wheels history. 20:45 i have found way to many of these at thrift stores. Not one had functioning lights. There are a few other castings with fun gimmicks that i can think of: Side Kick: weird sliding cockpit thing that is activated by pulling on the exhaust. The Heavyweights Series: a bunch of work trucks that were released in the early 70s, each with a unique moving feature. There is a commercial for them somewhere on youtube that emits dangerous levels of charm. ConVertAbles: odd series of cars that do weird things when put in hot water i guess. Idk, all of mine are broken. Ford Taurus Stocker: A red Nascar that was exclusive to the Ford Auto Assembly playset. It can be taken apart into 3 pieces, the base, body, and engine. Its extremely rare and obscure. Sizzlers: Motorized hot wheels! Some came with a huge bumper that is hilariously called the "Mouse Mustache". Circuit Crashers: Monster Trucks that explode when crashed! Crack-Ups: cars from the early 80s that have flipable panels that show damage when you crash into them. Tech Trax: very short lived series of cars that could bend in the middle and gave them a sort of suspension, or that was the idea anyways. They never really worked. Hot Wheels ID: Cars with micro chips in them so that you can download them into a racing game. Pretty short lived series as nobody cared about the game. Steering Rigs: Semi trucks that would turn the cab from a steering wheel mounted in the trailer. They're tricky to get the hang of, but satisfying when you do. Revealers: The cars themselves are dayglow and reek of the 80s, but they came wrapped in a paper that would supposedly dissolve when dipped in water. Also, the packaging would give you a Dairy Queen coupon for a free ice cream(expired in 1984). Get one and see if a DQ will let you redeem it. I cannot wait for the Color Shifters video!
@PolygonDonut11 ай бұрын
Omggg thank you for all the suggestions, these will definetly go in a part 2
@Zed32_Customs11 ай бұрын
Oh no! There were even more examples that I had listed but it looks like youtube never posted the edit! I'll see if I can remember most of them. Top Speed / Solar Flares: Translucent plastic cars that can twist in the middle. Hot wheels said it made them better on the track, but they are actually way too lightweight, causing them to crash too easily. X-V Racers (1980s): Gyro powered stunt cars. Not much is really known about the operation of these cars even though they are fairly common. Motorized XV Racers (1990s): same concept as the Sizzlers cars, but lighter and faster. Scorchers: spring powered cars? Not exactly sure how these work, all of mine are broken. Power Command: Pull-back-n-go cars that can be locked in place, then launched by tapping on their rear spoiler. Shift Kickers: same concept as Power Command, but they are launched by "shifting" a lever on the top of the car. Mini Race Timers: micro-scale hot wheels that could be worn as a watch and displayed the time in their windshield. Flip-Outs: Cars with spring-loaded flippers on the bottom. When crashed they'll flip violently into the air.

I have a three-way tie for my favorite gimmick cars: The first are the Turbo Glo series of cars released around 2006, which were basic rechargeable electric cars that had underglow-style lights in the base of the cars. They got a few of their own track sets as well (though the second one, Street Duel, seems to be much rarer than the Turbo Tunnel set) before being canned in 2007. It would be nice to see them brought back, preferably with the ability to change the color of the lights via some sort of remote. The second is the Rumblers series from 2008, which were already covered in this video. Admittedly, it would’ve been nice if these particular vehicles were fully compatible with regular Hot Wheels track sets (they required their own dedicated track sets to be used correctly), but otherwise the gimmick of having oversized engines that shook and glowed red when rolled was a fun distraction. The third and final series are the Tech Trax series of cars released only in 2004. The gimmick of these cars were that they had both special functions - some could twist on an axis, others could bend in the center - and were customizable; More specifically, you could take apart the cars and add or remove small metal weights that changed how the car performed on the track based on weight distribution. This weight distribution gimmick worked in tandem with the Tech Trax track sets (it was basically an attempt by Hot Wheels to imagine what a futuristic, highly customizable version of their Hot Wheels tracks would look like some time down the line), which itself featured a bunch of customizable track pieces and gimmicks, to create a super advanced version of the Hot Wheels cars and track system we were already familiar with. Sadly, much like the rest of the gimmicks I’ve already listed, this series was dropped in early 2005, and a lot of its later concepts were cannibalized into the Acceleracers series. And out of all the gimmicks I’ve listed, this is the one I wish Mattel/Hot Wheels would bring back, even if only for older/adult collectors and fans. It just has so much potential that it feels like a crime that said potential is just being left on the table.

I have used the "See Me Rollin'" in DnD before lol. Nothing like letting a toy car determine how much damage Magic Missile does.

this is only going to matter to a small selection of people, but the street fighter hot wheels have some pretty fun gimmicks too! one of my favorite examples is the vega car having a little claw that slides out on the side :)

I remember begging my mom to get me the Video Racer when I found out about it. Even with the terrible quality, it was still super fun and I still have it now! It's a neat thing.
