On the Switch port, I talked to Kayson twice while he was in his car by the diner. Once the chat ended and he got in his car, his car started hovering like a DeLorean and flew through the diner. As broken as this port is, I loved that experience

that would be really cool. considering DP2 is a Switch sequel, it would make sense. York/Zach could have a move in which Willie is jumping in out of nowhere and running ahead, dealing damage to everything in it's way. and Patty could be an assist or something. also York could have a move in which he calls for George, he drives in in his car and deals damage. man, even The Pickles could make an appearance... just imagine all the wild possibilities. the only thing that make York get as a DLC less than probable is 1. this game is so niche 2. is it a timed exclusive? if so, maybe he'll just be a lame spirit. that would be a shame

What a wonderful recap! It was highly informative and wildly entertaining. It's nice to know I'm not the only one obsessed enough with this game to play every single version. I'm not surprise to hear it took you so long to edit you were very thorough! It still boggles my mind that this game still doesn't have a good port after 10 years. I had high hopes for the switch version and was crushed with the day 1 bugs and the crashes. It's kind of hilarious that the original 360 is still the safest version to recommend out of the bunch because you at least don't have to worry about random crashes. It's truly a shame that everyone's mileage will very with the PC port as it's really my preferred version to play given the ability to make multiple save files. I don't know why but I'm one of the lucky few who can play the game with limited issues. Honestly I hate that I always have to give like a list of caveats which each version available whenever I recommend the game. Here's praying the sequel fairs better in that regard! I was really curious about the 3D stuff with the PS3 version and was always bummed that I never was able to check it out but thankfully it looks like I didn't miss too much lol. I can't wait to see what Swery has in store for the sequel and I look forward to your thoughts :)

My first experience with Deadly Premonition was a wild one. I'd hope you'll find the time to listen. It was in 2015-16. I told a friend of mine from school to download a pirated version of it for PC and he did (of course today I've bought it and its OST). As soon as I returned from school our PC died, and retrospectively wouldn't be returned until almost A YEAR afterwards (sweet karma stealing the game). I was impatient, and ran it on our laptop. It ran at about 8-12 fps the whole time, but I didn't gave up. I reached the part where you need to fish Thomas' suitcase in the lake, which was a problem since fishing with a keyboard is literally impossible and you must use a controller. I didn't had a controller, but you know what I did had? A frickin' steering wheel. So I plugged it in, carefully navigating York from the save point to the lake with no control over my camera, and it worked. I caught it. I finished the whole game before our PC returned from being repaired. This derranged experience of playing this game for the first time will forever be carved in my memory. It felt like the equivalent of running a marathon in the desert while listening the whole way to a podcast by Salvadore Dali.

I can't help feeling though that we live in a world that's increasingly less likely to produce a game like this ever again with all its unique positive qualities... I'm astounded by the level of research and attention to detail used to make this, as well as the editing done to make this easier to follow. If I had just one issue, it's the story analysis. I find that retrospectives are mainly worthwhile when the story is explained in at least a fairly linear and comprehensive way, so that we can have better context about what's being discussed and therefore become better able to understand and retain the information. As someone who experienced the game before (long ago), I think I have a grasp of the story as explained here, but I'm sure -- to people getting their first experience from you -- the whole narrative comes across as a mess and may dissuade them from considering it.
@HikikomoriMedia4 жыл бұрын
Michael, it is not my intention to explain every key detail of the plot. Deadly Premonition deals in surrealism, leaving room for individual interpretation. I ain't no authority here, just a guy who loves the game. If someone is disappointed that I didn't explain every key plot point and ruin all the surprises the game had to offer, then awesome. I recently re-played Deadly Premonition after almost a decade and my appreciation for it has grown a lot since I first it and this vid had only extended that more so with some of the production history of the game. I use to view it as a sorta joke game, but over the years I recognize it as one of the strongest examples of story telling in video games and also pretty ambitious game given how low budget it was. I finally played the Director’s Cut after years of seeing Deadly Premonition on the shelf of GameStop, and watching Jim Sterling talk about it. I never played it because I kept confusing it with Indigo Prophecy for so reason. But when I finally played it, and it got to the scene with York in the car talking about Tom and Jerry being an allegory for an Abusive Marriage and he wrecks the car and that squirrel makes a chimpanzee noise as it almost gets hit by the car I was sold and it became one of my favorite games from that point forward and really sets the tone for the more “mundane” parts of the game. I fucking love every second of it And then I noticed York’s…. “Flashlight chest” and couldn’t stop laughing for a good five minutes.

Excellent retrospective! I wonder what was going on behind the scenes for all of the re-releases to have ended up so poor. I'm guessing it might be a similar situation that the Silent Hill HD collection went through, where the original final build of the game was lost and they had to work off of an earlier version. But that's just speculation. It's just really crazy that none of the re-releases ever got close to being similar in quality to the original experience on the 360. There had to be a reason for these other versions to be so bad. Anyway, great job! Liked and Subscribed. I'll watch some more of your stuff!
@Etrius00234 жыл бұрын
Since they only released the PS3 version of the original in Japan, I theorize it's because they had so much difficulty getting the game to run and thus the port was pretty shoddy. How does that transition into the awful re-releases? Well, what I think happened is that they just took the existing PS3 port, upped the resolution (causing the awful performance) and made the small tweaks/additions featured in the DC and then ported that same version to PC (very poorly) and eventually Switch (each with their own small differences) because that was easier/more convenient then adding those changes over to the 360 release and porting that. Honestly, because Access Games wasn't involved in any capacity, I bet Toybox/RSG didn't even know that there was any difference between the 360 and PS3 releases, they probably just intended the DC to be a quick and cheap cash-grab.

very mild spoiler i guess kinda?... ... ... ... ... a nice tidbit about the detailed schedules you mention characters having: i remember being quite impressed when I saw George visiting the art gallery late at night. in one of the car conversations George actually mentions that he enjoys visiting the gallery, but you don't often see games actually making their characters do the things they say they do in a relatively organic manner! come to think of it I should have tried peeking tho. also, having had my first DP experiences with the PC and PS3 Director's Cut versions, I'm glad to see that quality-wise it's only up from here as far as the other versions go lmao. fantastic video btw. have a nice day hikiko

Great to see someone thoroughly comparing all the different versions! Clearly the board game is the way to go. Thank you. 👍 I do also wonder why so many of the ports are so broken. Is the game just unfixable due to some core coding, or is it just that the publisher/developer doesn't want to spend the money? I was never able to get past a certain point on my PC Steam copy of DP:DC, and wasted a lot of time trying to fix it and having progress lost. Seems absurd for a "proper" game that has gotten multiple console releases and has a dedicated fan following.
@HikikomoriMedia Жыл бұрын
I think it has a lot to do with the original programmers (Access Games) lack of involvement with the ports. The code was handed over to ToyBox which did not have the information needed to handle all the complex world systems in tandem. They clearly were more concerned with turning a quick buck, than preserving quality. DP 1 is worth getting an Xbox for to experience it as it was intended.

This is the one game that when I finished, I actually didn't know what to do with myself. I felt like piece of me was left in the game, that when turned off, stayed in the game world. Also as an aside note, didn't Emily's spirit merge with FYM during the finale. Once you kill the demon, she is there with Francis, and Zack is telling Francis, "You be nice and treat her right". I figure FYM wasn't in a vegetative state or whatever but instead he basically passed away with Emily by his side, giving you a sort of "Happy Ending" to his character, with Zack being the only one present now.

And you did! You’re one of the unsung heroes of KZbin. Waiting for patches on DP2 before taking the plunge, the frame rate killed me on day 1

1:41:02 I actually like this change. My first playthrough of DC, I was able to pick out the voice actor and it spoiled the Red Raincoat Killer's identity for me very early in the game. Using a nondescript animal roar is an improvement.

The weird food moments from D4 is a Benny & Joon reference, in fact most of those moments are just film and television homages.
@HikikomoriMedia8 ай бұрын
yeah when Benny is playing with his food. Good eye. I made a whole retrospective on D4 too. The most shameless homage is Memento

My sixth or seventh watch. HM sells Deadly Premonition like no one else. Wish the game was just a shade more popular so more people would talk about it, but I don't mind it being mainly enthusiasts at the lunch table. When you going to cover the English translation of Mizzurna Falls?

What about the Camera in XBoxOne version? did they make it OTS all the time or did they keep the areal view and other fixed angles in some places?
@HikikomoriMedia4 жыл бұрын
It's the same as the Xbox 360.

I've played this game multiple times and I had no idea that you can get new suits! I knew you could on the Playstation 3 version by default but not on Xbox 360 haha. I think this calls for booting the game up again and playing all the side missions, this game is a masterpiece in my eyes.

The short freeze on the PS3 version before the raincoat killer reminds me of Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast. Any random encounter would be spoiled by the sawmill that is the Dreamcast's disc drive.

Thanks for the SWERY videos Hikiko! (even tho I loved the good life you're right on many points haha!) :) I enjoyed this one. I wanted to add that the PC version with DP Fix has a "memory leak" problem for some. You keep consuming ram until your PC crashes. It's wwwwweeeeird. IDK if threre's a fix. In any case, thanks again for the hard work with this video and the D4 one (that one was awesome too!).

Galaxy of Terror is another little movie/horror nod. Sweary started doing these little things before it was cool I think, now every game has to have references in it

I didn't like the shooting all that much but the graphics didn't bother me because the story line was fantastic. This game has a lot of imagination and was fun to play. Didn't like the keys when your trying to run or dodge but all in all I'm glad they put it out. It's one of my favorite games bugs and all...

Great video, always found it strange the highschool is never mentioned or used in the game but it is there. Also how close it is to Galaxy of terror bar. Freaky.

How did I miss this video?! I only saw the ports part. Man, if only I had any sorts of Xbox. I was able to get PC version to run well at stable 30, but things like camera angles, missing textures, change in color and most importantly inconsistent storytelling are a dealbreaker. Here's hoping Xenia gets better.

As someone who’s first experience playing DP was the PS3 Directors cut port, that version made me a life long fan and place it as one of the most highly recommended experiences of any form of media to anyone, even people who i know dont play video games. I am now finally playing the xbox 360 version and i agree that the survival horror tank controls & fixed camera angles definitely are a big PS1/2 vibe (which is integral to the aesthetic) & graphics and textures are crispy & shiny. But i just want to say that the PS3 version never robbed me of that vibe or experience at all, its very clear what it is emulating and ppl should not be afraid to dive into the PS3 port, imho its a more than competent version. The experience is fully intact. 360 is the definitive version ofc, but i dont think its absolutely necessary & with prices rising on OG copys if someone picks up the PS3 version they should be very proud to own that version.

I would be proud to own Red Seeds Profile PS3, but I cannot cosign DP:DC PS3. My grade stands! I urge players to save the $40.00 and treat themselves.
@callumcockburn76345 ай бұрын
@@HikikomoriMediaword! for sure i understand your grade 100% and as far as Red Seed Profiles that is the superior version im sure but also just i think what i meant was that as someone stumbling into DP at a NA game store that DP DC experience with was a good one regardless. I personally never had any glaring issues, even knowing now that the version obviously has its problems. for me its still DP in a state that accessible to most without getting into imports & confusing alternate titles langiage barrier stuff. playing the XBOX 360 version now in its full intended experience is definitely a treat but i dont look back at my PS3 experience as a bad one at all, & i dont think others should feel robbed for having that experience. but my message is more aimed at players who dont have an xbox 360 or dont game on a PC as i was one of those ppl. so yea i totally understand your grading and i think your right! but still suprised to see that its one of the worst rated experiences when i genuinely had a great time with it on multiple playthroughs. i guess thats a testament to how good the game is! LoL anyways good to get a reply out of ya. looking forward to new content 🫡

I've had this vid in my watch later for an embarassingly long time. I love Deadly Premonition and I appreciated how vigilant you were with covering the port jobs. Admittedly I've only played the PS3 version to completion and dabbled in the Switch port so to know that the Xbox version is (mostly) without faults is eye opening. Don't think I'll be able to play that version any time soon, but regardless. Great video.

Real glad I decided to get the physical copy of Origins instead of downloading. And that a lot of the downgrades from the original (pop-in, lack of car friction, etc.) I just thought added to the game's odd, surreal charm 😅 Certainly not the best possible DP experience, but it didnt really hinder my enjoyment thankfully

Yeah, the performance is totally random across machines and versions of windows. I have gotten so many reports of "worked fine for me" and "my computer hard crashed".

yeah, I noticed when I first set up the game back in like 2013 or some shit, it actually ran. Pretty much it was only three years later (and onward) that it did the thing, for me, where it would just instantly crash the game on launch. I haven't tried it on my new win10 build but I don't particularly want to try just because the DC version is just so much worse in so many ways (even if I got it to run)
