Far over the misty mountains cold To dungeons deep and caverns old We must away ere break of day To seek the pale enchanted gold. The dwarves of yore made mighty spells, While hammers fell like ringing bells In places deep, where dark things sleep, In hollow halls beneath the fells. For ancient king and elvish lord There many a gleaming golden hoard They shaped and wrought, and light they caught To hide in gems on hilt of sword. On silver necklaces they strung The flowering stars, on crowns they hung The dragon-fire, in twisted wire They meshed the light of moon and sun. Far over the misty mountains cold To dungeons deep and caverns old We must away, ere break of day, To claim our long-forgotten gold. Goblets they carved there for themselves And harps of gold; where no man delves There lay they long, and many a song Was sung unheard by men or elves. The pines were roaring on the height, The winds were moaning in the night. The fire was red, it flaming spread; The trees like torches blazed with light. The bells were ringing in the dale And men they looked up with faces pale; The dragon’s ire more fierce than fire Laid low their towers and houses frail. The mountain smoked beneath the moon; The dwarves they heard the tramp of doom. They fled their hall to dying fall Beneath his feet, beneath the moon. Far over the misty mountains grim To dungeons deep and caverns dim We must away, ere break of day, To win our harps and gold from him!

And Bilbo felt a magic in the music that flowed through him. Upon him came a desire to leave his hobbit hole. To go and see pine trees and the great mountains. To wear a sword instead of a walking stick.

Ya know, despite the many quarrels I have with The Hobbit films, I do love its portrayal of the (2nd) great kingdom of Durins Folk. It honestly looked quite beautiful and is definitely one place I would love to visit (though to be fair I would visit everywhere in Middle-Earth hahaha). And it's history is definitely really facinating to study imo!!! :)

I would too, and build a confederation with erebor as the capital and central bank , dale as the trading hub, iron hills as our steel mass production factory, and build a town next to the lake and have it harvest lots of fish to feed population, and invest in rail lines from iron hills to erabor and Dale area to the lake to connect each other, rail lines make things easier and faster to move things and people around and have horses pull them around, build horse drawn harvesters and tillers to farm the area and have huge flocks of cows, goats and sheep to use, and we can build skyscrapers with the steel production from iron hills for housing and just have the floors made of wood and walls made of brick and stone , build a water dam near the waterfall up the cliff up there, build a water pipe for plumping uses and have sets of toilets and bathtubs on each floor of skyscrapers for bathroom uses and have a fireplace to heat up water for baths , a 2nd water pipe from dam to water the fields etc and a 3rd one to use the water to power a water powered built factory in Dale area, have a rail line into the woods to for lumber and firewood, use the factory to cut up the wood and chop it for lumber and firewood, have collectors go to mirkwoods to collect tons and tons of spider webs cuz there made of silk and spider silk is great for a clothing and it's bullet proof too making great material make clothes and have a section of the factory make clothes etc , another part of the factory make milk products from the herds of animals to make cheeses, cottage cheese, sour cream, creams, butter, candles and soaps etc to use , and eventually build a rail line to shire and Bree area for agriculture products and trade, a rail line to Rohan and gondor for agriculture and horses etc and one to riven dale to use it as a vacation resort after elves leave , and go from there

I began reading the LOTR durring the 1950s but my english was limited,i was also young & didnt understand much so i put the literature down until returning from vietnam, after finishing reading sometime in 1972 LOTR became my all time favourite literature, when the film trilogy was announced i had bad memories of earlier attempts to bring the stories to life via well meaning cartoons that were horrible, ive watched the entire trilogy every chance i had before retiring,id listen to books on tape durring my 2 to 5 hour commute 6 days a week but the readers werent emotionally invested the way this young man is ,of all the channels im subbed to i look forward to the latest men of the west installment reading the most , im currently fighting my 4th cancer related to my being covered with agents purple white and orange durring dozens of LRPs ,if my upcoming prostate surgery isnt effective removing the cancer its doubtful ill see 2020 or even leave hospital after the failed surgerys, when we reach the end of all we are and ever were its the little things that become important,my wife knows of my love of all things LOTR and will keep the Men of the West readings going in my ears via youtube until i take my last breath,it sounds corny but the readings ease my pain amd allow my sleep to go uninterrupted as long as 2 hours which dont seem like a long time until you are in the 4th and final stage with your prostate the size of a softball & pissing every 15 minutes, ill be making a play list with men of the west readings before i go for the surgeries in July,if i dont post after july 12th it means i took the dirt nap & thank you for the LOTR lore readings that allow me comfort that oxycontin and morphine cannot give me ,thank you for your passionate readings that allow this old man atleast a fleeting few minutes of peace .

Dwarves are what they are in the movies thou. What i dont like in the movies are the good portrayal of men. Like wtf? Men literally are the reason why arda fall. Betrayals and greed of numenor caused arda to be a fking globe. Even earendel made it to Valerian to ask for help, meaning men can definitely step foot to the undying lands but after the greed of numenors fking arda became a cell for all beings except elfs.

I love the dwarves wish I was one , I might be 4.5 ft tall but I'm lot stronger and can live a few hundred years, really great workers, live in a safe strong mountain hold with loads of gold and jewels etc to last for millennium and have big industrial forges and have a strong feel for family and honor and drink lots of beer and eat meat over big roaring fires and sing and get rowdy , we will be the ones who invent the steam engine to push us in a progressive industrial age advancing lol

I love the way you're videos always seem to end on an uplifting note. As for greed, I'd agree it leads to more problems the it solves. I'd say there's a world of difference between greed and ambition, as ambition can lead to great works and the betterment of many, whereas greed is more of a selfish pursuit for personal gain (or the gain of a select group) at the expense of others. For example, in LOTR, the main goal of The Fellowship of the Ring was to destroy The One Ring, an ambitions goal, but if successful, would rid the world of an embodiment of evil, clearly a good outcome for the vast majority of people.

"If more folk valued hearth and home, rather than gold and jewels. The world would be a merrier place. But sad or merry i must leave it now. Farewell." Thorin Oakensheild The Hobbit animated movie. More than any line i have heard this line sums it up the best. Take pride and value in home and loved ones more than anything else. These are worth more than any glittering gold. The restored Kingdom of Dale is interesting too. Its recorded kings are Bard I (2941-2977), Bain (2977-3007), Brand (3007-3019) and Bard II (3019-) [Appendix B]. While Bard I's exact title is not recorded, his son Bain was "King of Dale" but his grandson, the heroic Brand who died in the War of the Ring, was only "King in Dale". ------------The "in" and the "of" could be important (at least to a stickler like Tolkien). Case in point, there is a town in Pennsylvania, USA called King of Prussia. It is a common inn-sign in the UK to this day, having been conferred in honour of Frederick the Great of Prussia, Britain's ally in the Battle of Minden, 1759. Except - and I suspect Tolkien well knew this -- Frederick wasn't King of Prussia, only King in Prussia. The reason being that Prussia itself, the greater part of his dominions, was actually part of the kingdom of Poland of which theoretically Frederick was a vassal. Could there be some submerged history here in which the Dwarf-king Dain re-asserts (countervailing Bain) his position as feudal overlord?

So what eventually happened to all of the dwarves? Did they mix with men or all die out?

The Silmarillion. There are other books to get into it, but this one is the best.

Is there any information on how houses and private property were organized in dwarven cities? If you wanted a personal room, would you just carve it out? Same goes for some of the elves, the green elves and grey elves do not seem to have houses in their cities

JP Olivetree That's an interesting question. I think it's pretty much certain that dwarves had private property. Remember how once Bilbo became a member of Thorin and Company he was offered 1/14 of all profits from their venture. Which makes me think all members of the Company were given an equal share of any treasure acquired.
