I didn't know about toys not being advertised. Interesting. As for candy canes, they were introduced by churches in order to bait kids into going to church when Christianity took hold of the holiday.. quite honestly. Sometimes I tell people Happy Saturnalia or Merry Mithras. :) If you thought some of the mall Santas were creeping now, imagine how creepy they were in the 1800s. :) haha Thanks for the history of toys at Christmas.
