The History of God Of War Part IV - The Origins of Kratos.

In 2010, God Of War III closed the book on the story of Kratos. But hold on, hold on, just because the book was closed... doesn't mean we've read all the chapters! God Of War: Chains Of Olympus, God Of War: Ghost Of Sparta and God Of War: Ascension make up a trilogy of prequels, all taking place before the end of vengeance. For the first time ever, the franchise would make the leap into the world of handhelds, as Chains and Ghost are both exclusive releases to the Sony PSP. Ascension would rocket the series back into the home console market, but the question at hand was this: after starring in 6 games inside of just 8 years... Could God Of War resist the fatal flaw of franchise fatigue? Let's find out!

I just had to drop in and say this retrospective series is one of the most brilliant and entertaining things I have ever seen. I just went through and watched the whole History of God of War series up to this video this evening, and was utterly enthralled throughout! Your level of detail and analysis is truly admirable. I have a similar story to your own. I was 13 when the original God of War came out on the PS2, and I have been an avid fan of this series ever since and have played every installment. It's one of my all-time favourite game series today. I have always loved mythology ever since I was a child, so this series struck a chord with me from day one. And the way you break down just how impactful it all is (and also give credit where credit's due that Kratos isn't some one-note character like so many seem to imply -- thank you for that!!) is amazing. Bravo, sir. Bravo. I can't wait for your last part! I loved the God of War reboot and eagerly await Ragnarok.

That scene where Kratos has to push away his daughter is honestly the most heart-wrenching thing I've seen in a video game. It really bugs me when people try to prop up the new God of War reboot by dismissing the old series as immature or one-note. You've done an excellent job of recapping the series and getting over the dramatic weight of each story. The next time I see someone try to write-off the old GOW as silly, I'll direct them to your videos. Prequels seem really hard to make because you have to come up with a substantial story, but it can't be TOO substantial, if that makes sense. The story must be satisfying enough to engage the viewer, but also inconsequential enough to not be brought up in the other games. Ready at Dawn found the perfect balance, creating two interesting tales that add to the saga while not feeling like extraneous fluff.

Been looking forward to this Ian as always man but I'm mad i missed the live stream i was at work and i checked my phone and saw the notification saying it was premiering in 30 min and i was like cool i can maybe still catch it but then i noticed the notification was 27 min old and i couldn't take a break but I'm checkin it now while I'm eating and probably better cuz i ain't gotta rush now...the PSP man is such an amazing console that deserves much more respect..i mean u got people out there writing articles acting like it was a failure just cuz it sell as much as the DS(another amazing portable no doubt) but since when is 80+ million sales not successful for a console..the PSP though man me being a major Jrpg fan was and still is(i still have my PSP from March 2005 i used part of my first tax refund to get it, Sony builds their consoles to last man) the place to be but it had everything and there's just something about to where it's known but not too too popular that makes it feel underground such an amazing portable I'm with u on that one for sure..thanx as always my DanDan for the time u put into these things i appreciate it mucho

I remember being in The Fields of Elysium & having to do that button mashing thing to get separate Kratos & his daughter. Heartbreaking. I'd play it again on a harder difficulty level & try something - not touching the O button & seeing if Persephone would have some kind of game over screen where she destroys the pillar or something. But nope, you had to push the button & separate the 2 on your own.

Since we've covered a majority of the GOW series,I'd like to bring up the biggest Missed Opportunity that's sprung up from this series and I'm talking about 2 missing Bosses that are still Alive from the Greek Pantheon that we never got to face and are such missed opportunities in the Twin Siblings Artemis and Apollo. The problem i have with ghost of Sparta are the so many inconsistencies it has in its story. Like you said, Kratos saw Ares kidnap his brother, so why would kratos pray to ares when nearing his death in part 1? That's not like kratos. And why would Ares listen to kratos' prayer? Like this person was the brother of god killer, and also has a tattoo similar to the mark. The "he saw potential in him to use him to kill zeus" excuse is nonsense. And then zeus. why does zeus doesn't understand that kratos is meant to be the true god killer even after thanatos proclaims it? And why did he wait it soo long till kratos' attack on rhodes to do something about him? It also creates further confusion when we take into consideration the grave digger, especially the post credits scene. It makes the plot point in 3 where it was explained that zeus and other gods suffering from some sort of paranoia due to pandora's box, completely redundant.

I go back and forth on which is better- Chains of Olympus or Ghost of Sparta. Really like the levels of Sparta, but I like the story better in Chains. The stuff with Kratos' daughter is more emotional than anything that happens with that brat Atreus ;) I owned Ascension. It's a good-looking game, and they certainly gave it their all, but it just doesn't reach the standards of the original trilogy. The mythology was scraping the bottom of the barrel with the obscure names, it's place in the timeline was meaningless, and in an effort to increase the challenge, they just made the enemies cheaper, and I couldn't stand that. Not in the plans at the moment. I could do a video looking back at the PS2 trilogy, but the only one I've ever beaten is GTA V. I don't really have the knowledge to cover the whole series.
