WATCH UNTIL THE VERY END FOR A SMALL SURPRISE! By popular demand, the Toku Professor is back with another history class! In this video, he covers the history of the Godzilla kaiju Kumonga (AKA Spiga), beginning with Son of Godzilla in 1967 all the way up through Singular Point in 2021. He also discusses Kamanga, Hanenga and Zenbunga, the three close relatives of Kumonga. I just bought a new microphone, and I am learning how to use it properly, so there are some times in the video where the audio goes up in volume and then down. Hopefully over the next few videos I'll be able to iron this all out. I also didn't mention this in the video, but the Kumongas in Singular Point were acutally given a scientific name based on the scientific name of the real-life Kumonga discovered in 2020! Just a fact I missed. Anyway, I hope you enjoy (and take notes)! :)

Great stuff! Warning: Many words ahead! It is my humble opinion that Kumonga's role as the antagonist of Son of Godzilla is among the most impressive "kaiju villain" performances in any single film. I’m not talking about fan favorites who have built up reputations over multiple appearances...this is looking at how Kumonga serves the narrative of a single film. Many kaiju villains are a bit abstract in the threat they pose. Yes, they’re undeniably destructive, but they rarely directly threaten human protagonists, and moving to another continent would often put our protags out of harm’s way. But Kumonga’s one of the rare kaiju that fixates on humans, and combining that with the small island setting, it’s a direct, aggressive threat to every single other character in the film, human and kaiju alike. Furthermore, out of that cast, Godzilla’s literally the only character that has any chance of fighting back against Kumonga on his own. Kumonga is also planted and paid off very effectively. You hear it described ominously in Saeko’s father’s journal. Saeko points out its lair, which our protags are forced to traverse in order to retrieve the red water. You have moments of tension as Goro knocks boulders down into its lair. Then finally Minilla and Kamacuras’s scuffle unearth it. From this point on, Kumonga is an absolutely relentless threat, pursuing our heroes and trapping them in a cave. It also effortlessly defeats both a Kamacuras and Minilla. Having a “fodder” kaiju like Kamacuras serves the film well, as we see the effects of its toxic stinger and how immediately lethal it is, which makes its advance on an immobilized Minilla all the more alarming, and Godzilla’s arrival a fantastic, cathartic moment. Kumonga then proves to be a very formidable foe to the king himself. It has that classic memorable moment when it plays dead, it effectively takes part in the first “beam clash” of the series...with its web, it shrugs off several blasts from Godzilla, and it physically overpowers him when it rises to its full height. Minilla mastering the atomic ray was absolutely essential to Kumonga’s defeat here. As you said, Kumonga’s design and the masterful puppetry help sell Kumonga as well. It remains one of the best practical-effect giant spiders in film, and the full-size leg prop helps it interact with human characters in a way few kaiju get to (I just wish the shots combining the leg prop and the body lined up differently, because in the film it looks like the leg is coming from Kumonga’s mouth. But that’s just nitpicking). Also, Kumonga's theme is really unsettling and does a great job at putting you "on edge." Unfortunately, it seems really hard to find. The track that scores the final battle, "Godzilla vs. Kumonga," is all over, but the motif that plays when Kumonga first emerges and antagonizes humans doesn't seem well represented, at least on KZbin. Tl;dr: Kumonga in Son of Godzilla is one of the best-realized kaiju and kaiju “performances” in the entire genre, and the fact the spider often gets dismissed or lumped into the “generic animal” designation is a huge disservice.

FOOTNOTE 1 : forgot to mention in some dubs of SON OF GODZILLA , spiga is called Aspiga (don't know why) FOOTNOTE 2: there's an amazing American model company called KAIJU MODELER that specializes in making lesser kaiju models. Not too long ago ( pre pandemic) they released an incredible KUMONGA model replete with faux fur trimming for it's legs !! Bought one for my collection, it came in a deceptively small ,but heavy box , but when compete , it's huge!! No joke !! I have no shelf space for it !! If , though your looking for some different kaijus ,give them a look up !!! Meet with them before, they hope to have new releases MAGMA , ( MAGUMA ) GULALA and others soon .
