Not sure if the static on the Imperial anthem was intentional or not, but if it was it was a great touch! Helped nail the feel of the era, as a side note I also would of included the borders of the states formed out of Brest-Litovsk instead of a single occupied area. Because as far as the Germans at the time were concerned, the war on the eastern front was over and the treaty was final.

Thanks, Tigerstar. That silent break is ... chilling. Between 1949 and 1990 you could have played "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" and "Auferstanden aus Ruinen" at once. Yes that would sound crazy. In 1989/1990 there was a debate about using a different anthem or writing a completely new one but in the end they just continued the old Joseph Haydn melody with the lyrics by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben.

@@MaxwellTornado "Das Lied der Deutschen" by Joseph Haydn / August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben has been a national anthem all the time since 1922, except for the era and area of the German Democratic Republic. @@MaxwellTornado They sang the first stanza (Deutschland Deutschland über alles) and the "Horst Wessel song" (Die Fahne hoch). After the second world war it was forbidden to sing it in the American occupation zone. By the initiative of Konrad Adenauer, first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, the third stanza "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" became the anthem of (west) Germany, and this phrase (Unity and right and liberty) was also engraved on the edge of the 2 DM and 5 DM coins. There is no law specifying this, just an exchange of letters between Konrad Adenauer and Theodor Heuss (first president of the FRG). Nevertheless the anthem, together with the flag and other symbols, is subject to StGB §90a "insult of the state and its symbols", a crime that can be punished by up to three years in prison.

Nicely done, but a few mistakes I have noted: Waldeck-Pyrmont existed only until 1929 and the "Amt Neuhaus" was part of the GDR and stayed until 1993 at Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, when it became part of Niedersachsen, not already in the 40's. Also parts of the "Landkreis Prignitz" in Brandenburg were part of M-V from 1990-1992.

She had seen solidgers dead on the ground and gun fire. Also, that her family was in trouble with the soviets, she knew (and her mother),that the soviets won't show mercy. My family was silesian and thery did go to "exile", to escape the north korean similar DDR. That was awful, how to the germans suffer (the innocent people) from these conditions. Even her family (also soliders) had fear of stalin. That was only a little story of my Grandma in the WW 2.

I mean I really dig how the border of looked but it's far away from a "shame" that we lost that territory. We committed the most disgusting atrocity in all of human history and forced the most destructive of all wars upon the globe. Losing this territory was fair and important. Fun fact the fifth Chanclor Willy Brandt was the first one to accept the new borders. This was a controversial topic on the one hand because people wouldn't wanna give up the Prussian parts and on the other hand because he therefor legitimized the GDR to have defined borders and therefor being a sovereign states. He did this, to "apologize" to Poland. Ok I wish a wonderful day to whoever's reading this. Peace out.

Huh. One thing I never realized is how closely the modern German internal borders follow the Nazi-era borders. I knew they were different from the old Imperial/Weimer borders, but it seems like the states of today fairly closely follow the Gau borders from the 30s/40s, albeit grouped together. Not exact, by any means, but fairly close. I suppose when you're getting rid of the antiquated state and province borders of the old German Reich, you might as well use the defeated powers replacement borders. No reason to let perfectly good border work go to waste if you're already cleaning house to get rid of the people who might have power bases there, I suppose.

The boarders are also really good cultural indicators. Every state has a unique culture in terms of dialects, food, drinking habits or overall behavior. For example I'm from the north to be exact from the most eastern part of the west living directly on the former boarder to the GDR in lower Saxony and the stereotype for us northern people is that we don't talk. Like we're literally all introverts. Those different cultures probably emerged from the time when Germany wasn't unified. I'd actually love to look this up but I ain't got time for such a research. It is pretty interesting, Germany and its states are incredibly diverse
