I use Opening gambit on H3 and Machine neo, because OG can work even for assist, so with Point sensor, it's still good

It's pretty fun on point sensor weapons, but if you die once or twice early or your teammates don't follow up on your sensors then it's over just like that. Feels awesome when it works but it's risky to keep up

Out of all the ideas you gave, I would accept the fact that the only way to test if your OGambit still active is by jumping or checking your swim speed. Even if they change nothing, some sort of sound effect or visual cue will help a lot on letting you know. Same goes to Last Ditch Effort, its way too subtle to even be noticable.

I think at least with LDE it is much easier to keep mental track since it's just "is it the last 30 seconds/has the opponent scored to 50(min power)/30(max power)?" but with OGambit you have to keep mental track of how many kills you've gotten & calculate the end time

First of all love the fact that you acknowledged it does have a situational benefit in Rainmaker. That is the only scenario I would equip it (if you can push the rainmaker immediately, it's almost like getting your team a head start), you are way ahead of other content creators who write off of abilities and weapons just because they are not currently in fashion for the competitive meta. I also wonder if it has uses for long-range snipers (e litre + heavy splatling) who can use it to set up in position uncontested and are more likely to get early splats to extend usage. I also really love the idea of a sound alert for when it switches off. There is no reason why Nintendo shouldn't do this, and I would be more likely to use it if they did. Good work!

I definitely agree that the Opening Gambit timer needs to pause when you die for the ability to ever be viable. Taking into account the time it takes for enemies to respawn and travel across the map, the window to get a splat/assist every 15 seconds without dying is already incredibly tight. But adding on your own respawn and travel time is almost guaranteed to close that window completely, and an ability that stops working if you die even once is just too risky. Especially in Solo Queue where you can randomly run into people using Respawn Punisher.

IMO, a buff for Opening Gambit that would make sense, is to have your performance at the beginning of the match determine what buffs you get for the rest of the match. As an example, If you splat 1 opponent, you keep 25% of the effect provided by opening Gambit for the rest of the match. 2 splats could give 50%, 3 splats 75% and 4 splats 100%. For sure this would need to be thought out a LOT more than the moments it took to write this down. But I think the core idea here could be useful.

I have done quite a bit of opening gambit + custom blaster, and I have found rain maker to actually be quite bad on most maps. The problem is that on a lot of maps popping the rain maker is required before you can get kills because there isn't any way to sneak around and be aggressive until you do. I would say in general TC and SZ are better for opining gambit because they allow for more aggressive and open play early on, and kills generally happen sooner. However even more important than the mode is the map. Maps like Hammer head bridge that are super long are bad because the first 15 seconds are spent just getting to mid. Maps like undertow spill way are bad because mid is a pinch that doesn't let you move in and get kills, allowing the enemy team to stall you out without even trying. It's a very niche strategy, but I think it can work on some map/mode combinations. Once you get the first 4 kills it's very easy to keep it for a long time, but getting the first 4 is always the hardest.

It’d be tough to give any more meaningful buffs to opening gambit while sticking to the name “gambit”. Unlike the other abilities it carries an inherent risk. The way it is now, a super skilled player can stack 20 assists/splats to keep the buffs for the entire match. Lowering that skill ceiling for other players would give the top players even more of advantage, and like you said, there’s plenty of other safe abilities. As it is, Opening Gambit is an extremely niche but rewarding hard mode for those looking to be both aggressive and a survivor.

Actually it really isn't, since Opening Gambit is the English Translation name for it. In Japanese the name translates more to "Running Start" which fits more inline with what the ability actually does Edit: Expanding on that, they could easily just have you regain opening gambit for getting say maybe 2-3 kills without dying, to signify regaining your momentum. I just hate how translations sometimes completely lose the meaning of words, though I *kinda* see what they mean by Opening Gambit, because if you chose this ability over the others, you really are making a gambit XD

@@Whodjathink I think the English name still makes sense, as an opening gambit usually means "preliminary tactic".

@@lieutenantpepper3421 hard to agree with that when the only benefit it gives you is the ability to go fast. Which in this case calling it "Headstart" or "Momentum" would be a more fitting name.

I feel like its one of those abilities that is super strong if youre insane at the game but weak if youre not. Chocopero made a few videos on it and it really shows how busted the ability could really be when played optimally, its just really hard to lol. I think 52 is the best weapon for it in this game since it can take really good advantage of the mobility and intensify action. It also gets picks and trades fairly easy to keep the timer steady Surely we get a video on recon next
