I recall the fashions of the 70's and 80's living in South Africa, and short, tight shorts were all the rage then, except for our SADF soldiers on the border between South West Africa (Namibia) and Angola. Off-duty was your own affair, but on patrol in the bush, long army Browns were worn. While South Africa did not get as hot as the then Rhodesia did, duty on The Border was as hot, if not hotter. Going out into the bush in shorts was an invitation to serious bodily damage from thorns, bity critters and the sun. We were warned that if we got sunburn, we'd be on a disciplinary charge (DD1) for damage to state property!
