I was playing CRPGs way back on an Apple 2 in the late 70's. I must have wasted a year of my life on Wizardry. Then it was a Commodore 64, then an Atari 1040st. My first PC around 1990 was a beast with a whopping 300 megabytes of space on a harddrive the size of a shoe box that rattled the desk when it read or wrote. I remember many of these games fondly. Many are still good games to play nowadays, like Fallout 1&2 and the old AD&D games like Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment. You can still get these games, configured to work on modern systems, for very reasonable prices, over at GOG.com.

i realized that I played naturally as a gamer, so many rpgs through the years :) its beautiful, the stories, the fantasy, the form of playing, the desings, etc... i really love rpgs of all kinds, the feeling of progress is so diferent compared with other genres (like a pure platform game for example), leveling mecanics, crafting, buying stuff for the journey,etc, its a magical formula to me xd i miss the last story,pandoras tower or transistor, they were not a commercial succes but they are greats games to. nice vid c:

I think you're wrong when claiming the genre's origins were on Unix. Very earliest preserved titles that are sadly omitted here like pedit5 and dnd were on the PLATO system, so it would mean it was Dungeon that was following suit if they were influencing each other. And Dungeon seems to run on PDP10, not PDP11, so I guess that means it would have been running TOPS10? Unix couldn't run on a PDP10 afaik. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

It was with Microsoft's taking action in the console market and finally facing games like Kotor that shifted the weight of rpgs coming back onto European shoulders to be liftet once more. And it hasn't changed since, no matter what other people think.

There was never a Government restriction regarding Dragon Quest. That was a voluntary act by Enix.

There have been only 2 games that I consider RPGs: Fallout 1 and the Age of Decadence. All the rest are action games with RPG elements.

Thanks for this. Love my J/RPGs, it's my fav genre and pretty much 95% of my games collection are J/RPGs lol. Personally I preferred SquareSoft to SquareEnix :/ it feels like they scrapped turn based battles and went onto real time ones. A shame turn based J/RPGs are dying out.

I'm sad that Super Mario RPG wasn't mentioned at all. And that in the end, Kingdom Hearts 3 (the most anticipated game of the year) is to come next year (hopefully). The new KH game looks fantastic, and no matter what it will be an improvement from their previous two games. Hopefully they remake Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2 to be more open world like Kingdom Hearts 3.

Being late to this comment, Boy are you off! Borderlands is a shooter with rpg elements. Literally speaking Doom and furthermore Wolfenstein came from the dungoen crawler rpg genre by taking the shield and sword away and replacing them with guns. You do not chose your statsand stuff in BL like you do in typical western rpgs. So here I am throwing "shits" at you.

WRPG stands for Western typically games like mass effect elder scrolls and fallout are considered this. JRPG stands for Japanese RPG this consists of Final Fantasy Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Quest

This is a pretty bad video, you seem to neglect or brush through some of the greatest things to define rpgs. And jrpgs for the most part are not actually rpgs, and just because a game has stats or upgrades it doesn't become an rpg. Google the definition, jrpgs are a poor hybrid, they are action/whatever games with minor rpg systems, true role-playing is missing in them for the majority.

Modern WRPGs don't have true role-playing either. For true role-playing, you'd have to go back to classic CRPGs, or even further back to tabletop RPGs.
